What responsibility has Smart got for the trading and player targeting. My thoughts were he was a scout and talent coordinator. The footy dept was responsible for the implementation.

Who ever decided to forgo the midfield deficiencies this year needs to accept responsibility.
Crap development and forgoing the midfield deficiencies over the last 5 years are the main problems and CC is responsible for both.

Schwab and Hart instigated Connolly's contract extension in February 2005. That should never have happened, and at the end of 2005 after consecutive failures Connolly should have been sacked. Schwab has played a large part in our current onfield woes.

Exactly. Connolly is a nice guy, he has done some good things for us but he is not the man for the job at hand. And wanting a new coach does not make me a "bad supporter". God forbid, but if Connolly is still coach next year i will still be behind the Dockers. I will just be disappointed.

geez alot of these types of posts sound really familiar.

What are you on about?

Schwab and Hart took their positions at the end of 2001, they are hardly at fault of what happened in 1995 to 2001. Im sorry but that statement is just sheer stupidity.

One person who has been there since day one is our recruiting manager Phil Smart, and given our bad history of willing to trade for experienced players who are past their best as opposed to keeping our picks and using the picks to pick the same type of players over again while not meeting deficiencies in our team, he has to accept some of the blame.

IMO we need a overhaul of our list in terms of midfielders and we need to show Broadbridge the door. Im sorry but our midifeld is consistently too slow, too dumb and lacks skill.

Right so let me get this straight...Your sticking point on my post was because I mentioned Neesham and Drum era's.

Do you have an opinion on the guy's at the top? Schwab and Rick Hart?
Do you have an opinion the thread's topic regarding admin shouldering part of the blame?

My main point was that 13 years and nothing has changed, players have come and gone...We have a strong list...Yet we still look the same side we did back in the early dark ages.

We do not.

This season has sucked. Last year did exist. This year, no matter how disappointing, doesn't wipe that out. Freo is nothing like the Neesham or Drum years. CC has underachieved but he deserves to go down as the best coach we have ever had and deserves to be remembered fondly. He's the first coach who coached a Freo team that actually had something resembling respect.

There are probably also a lot of people who have agreed with you over the last two or so years but did not express their opinions on bigfooty boards. Probably more people than you think.

Put it this way mate, I remember putting my head in my hands and having a little cry when they extended his contract. Sure I was not the only one.

Anyway, you are confusing me. What is it you are actually saying?

Nope i get. You are having a bit of an " Aren't I clever". moment. A " I am the only one who saw this coming" smugness attack. You carry on darl, enjoy yourself.

All I am saying is people express their opinions other places than the bigfooty board.

It made your post look silly.

For the record, Rick Hart has not done much wrong in his job. The only thing he has done that was silly was when he gave the season 2005 the big tick and I'm not sure about being against him on the 2005 contract extension. It would have been a bit rich to have sacked CC at the end of 2004 and if his contract was extended to anything less than three years he would have been a dead man walking ala Neesham in 1998, while at the same time it was risky to extend his contract for three years given the pathetic performance at the end of 2004 and 2005.

I'm unsure about Schwab. I'd like to believe in the speculation that he is a big string puller and that his friendship with CC is hindering the club's ability to make the right on field calls, but atm it's just speculation.

As far as on field performance over the 13 years is concerned, we were absolute shyte from 1995-2001 where fans were just hoping than any win would be a bonus. Under CC we have gone from being that crap all that time to expecting finals success because the team has developed into a half decent side. I think there has been significant chance under CC/Hart/Schwab and for the better on the field, it's just that it hasn't been as good as the expectations from supporters and the media and thats why they are under fire.

I think there might well be a cutural problem in the club over the 13 years. I thihnk we might have developed a near enough is good enough mentality which is stopping us from succeeding at the highest level in terms of making finals, winning finals and winning premierships. A contract to West Coast's and Port Adelaide's mentality when it comes to on field performance.

It would have been ridiculous to sack CC at the end of 2004, but he was contracted for 2005 and that season should have been make or break just like 2007. After missing the finals 2 years in a row with a very good list they should have said thanks for your time but we don't think you can take us to the summit.

My debut post - not a Dockers supporter but I am a West Aussie footy fan so am interested in goings on of both perth AFL Clubs.
Is it correct that Cameron Schwab was employed by the Dockers as a Recruiting Consultant when they first got their AFL Licence? I seem to recall him being involved in putting together the initial squad.

Cheers

Couldn't have put it any better myself Azza - great post.

I think Azza has found the key ingredient for this year - expectation. This is without a doubt the first year I have ever REALLY had any expectation for the team. We've gone from blind hope, to a bit of hope to total disbelief last year and now this year we EXPECTED to be challenging for the flag. Everyone is horribly disappointed with what has happened this year. Everyone agrees there needs to be change. I think the main thing we need to do is ensure that the change is done as diplomatically and dignified as it possibly can. Love him or hate him, Chris Connolly has given his life to this club over the last 6 years - he deserves respect from the supporters of the FFC and I hope over the next 7 weeks (or however long he has left) that he receives it.

Who said everyone agrees there needs to be a coaching change?

I think we need the best available coach. If Connolly is the best available coach I want him to stay.

I'd say 95% of Cats supporters wanted a coaching change last year. It's looking like the Geelong boards decision to back in the man they thought was capable of doing the job was the right one. Mob rule does not always lead to best practice. especially when the one's leading the mob (read certain sections of the football media and the Freo supporter base) have their own agenda in mind.

Hear, hear. :thumbsu:

(Said the exact same thing myself in another thread).

There is a definitely cultural problem at the club.

We consistently go for the big trade's, are unable to develop our youth, have on and off field disciplinary problem's and the most up and down side (performance wise) in the compeition.

This has been consistent since inception into the competition .

Our list may have improved on paper...Our membership has improved...Very little else has.

I am top of the tree for not wanting him to remain on as coach of the club however totally agree he needs to be treated with respect and dignity.

My opposition is about winning games of footy and getting us into a GF. He is not able to do that. He has been given a fair go and the club needs to move forward.

Roundhouse, I don't think I specified that the change had to be a coaching one. However, in this game, it's very easy to sack the coach, it's not quite so easy to sack 3/4 of your players and start over again. I've also reached a point where it seems to be the inevitable so I'm not going to fight it anymore.

I agree that we need the best available coach - in fact, I'd just like the best coach regardless of whether they are available or not - make them available.

As far as agendas go, I agree with you here too. There seems to be a neverending queue of people that know what is 'best' for the FFC, but let's hope that Hart, Schwab and the board have the strength and determination to do what REALLY is right for the FFC and not just what they are told is right.
