hey, does anyone know how to add shadow effects??

What sort of shadows?
Shadows behind the image? Or shadows on the image?

This is what I've done for the VFL.
I use this texture

Copy this, and paste it over the jumper.
Extend the size of it to cover your jumper.
Copy the collar, cuffs and jumper and paste them in front of the overlay.
Then with the collar, cuffs and jumper selected, make them all the same colour.
Then choose Pathfinder>Merge.
This makes them all one shape.
Select this Path, and the Overlay and Right Click and select Clipping Mask.
Now the Overlay is over the top of the jumper, but it looks like the above.
Click on the Transparency tab, and change Normal to Multiply.

I'm struggling to get this to work.. Any tips?

You've selected all 3?
You could even right click and make a Compound Path
You're just trying to make one shape that covers the three Paths.

There should be a Layer called Jumper-Sleeveless
Find that, and in that layer there will be three sections, Cuffs, Designs and Main Colour.
Click on one of the items in that Layer.
Draw a box with the Rectangle Tool in your Tools.
This will be your band.
Position it where the band went on the jumper you're making.
Once happy with the position, click on Designs and it will open up a <Clipping Path>.
In the Layers box, select the Path for the band and drag it on top of the <Clipping Path> and release.
This will put it directly underneath.
When you look at the player, he will have the band inside the confines of the border of the jumper.
Repeat for the socks.

An open query to anyone that can help please... Contrary to what I have been able to do so far in Ai there is a hell of a lot that I simply can't seem to get my head around. I don't want to make it look like I'm spamming this thread with silly questions on how to do certain things but... aaaarggh , I need it explained in micro detail for it to sink in.

1. I have downloaded an image of a tiger pattern , its in jpeg format.
2. I wish to make a clipping mask with this pattern to go in Mero's Blank BLK template but only on the front side panels area.
3. Questions being thus - With the Tiger pattern, do I have to Image trace it first? , if so is the next step then opening a new document
in Ai then placing the image within , then click on image trace? Where do I start?
4. If what I have said in point 3 is so , then in order to make a clipping mask , where and how do I place it?
Do I have to open the BLK template? then copy the tiger image into the layers section in the BLK template to be able to do a clipping
mask?
5. I am beginning to think I am way out of my depth but I am certainly most eager to learn , like other posters on here who might be struggling a touch.
I am also trying to follow the tuts and advice given but it can be a little overwhelming at times and frustrating.

Any help is more than appreciated , Old Chap.

2. Turn off all layers except side panels. paste the tiger pattern over the side panels. Duplicate the side panels and paste them over the tiger pattern. Click and drag to select those layers. Right click and then click "Create Clipping Mask"

Dunno, that usually does the job for me. Maybe play around with having them in the same sublayer/group or whatever before creating the compound.

The biggest path needs to be on the bottom of the layers.

My process. Which I created when re-creating the older logos for sponsors.

Open new document, place the image you are tracing.
I always Lock it, and create a new Layer.
All my tracing goes in there.
Basically I just trace around each of the paths as best I can.
Research Illustrator Bezier Curve tutorials for where to place the pen tool point, but a good rule of thumb is the widest point where the curve begins to change back.
By that I mean the very bottom part of the U, the widest parts of the B
I almost always use Shift and Pen Tool, because that makes for straight lines.
Also, try to use as few points as possible.
When you've finished tracing around each shape, create the triangle white space
I used the Line tool to go from the inside of the U to almost the top of the T, right along where it cuts off the letters.
Then Direct select the two end points at each end of these lines and right click Join.
Now you have a path that's the shape of the piece that cuts through the letters.
Fill that with any colour and copy and paste it 6 times, one for each path.
Turn off visibility on 5 of them.
Select the first one, and one of the paths, making sure the triangle is above the Path in Layers.
Pathfinder>Minus Front and it will clip away the part of where you traced that's hanging over the triangle.
Repeat for each path.
Go to the top of the letters.
Click on each point using Direct Select.

Make sure the Y axis number is the same for each.
That will mean each line across the top is the same.

It's the best way to create those negative spaces you see in logos.
Draw the shape you want, then subtract it front the shape in front.

Thanks very much Fizzler , really appreciated mate (Sorry for not posting earlier than this , had a bit of a hectic time lately , looking after my mates 2 small dogs as well as my own , 4 all up and on top of being a carer for my mum aaaand some strife with my next door neighbors its been interesting).

is there a way i can take something designed on photoshop (such as a logo) and make it work on Ai?
