Not that it really worries you but Sydney knew very early on the trade was not going to happen.
What they did was the opposite of Dodo. Trying to accommodate Papley's request to trade to Carlton.
They still managed to please Zac Jones request.

Daniher did himself no favours, by being late and overseas when making the decision.
But I reckon all he wanted was a acceptable contract from Dons and some clear future - DENIED and now definitely GONE!

It all worked out Papley is still a long contracted Swan. :thumbsu:
Swans (list team) later helped Brisvegas (to their detriment they now owe Swans a favour) when Dodo wanted to raid their academy and made him more of a laughing stock!
Wasn't Papleys trade reliant on the Daniher trade?

But you are also advising that he does not control the job he is employed to do, and/or, that he is in agreement with the other said d'heads.
No list manager in the league operates in isolation from the rest of the organisation.

So, in short you are saying yes, they never intended to trade him, so they f*&^%D him around and Sydney also.
As I said, unless Sydney offered an over the top trade, it wasn't realistic. I'd say Sydney themselves knew that as it seems they didn't try all that hard to make it happen, nor did they try particularly hard to make the Papley trade happen.

But I reckon all he wanted was a acceptable contract from Dons and some clear future - DENIED and now definitely GONE!
EFC offered him a reported 4 year contract in late September this year. This isn't Ben Brown where North withdrew the contract offer.

Dodo wanted to raid their academy and made him more of a laughing stock!
You mean the Keidean Coleman bid? For a player who's looked pretty good at AFL level so far? Sounds less like 'raiding their academy' and more like bidding on a player who's been pretty good, which is as it should be.

While Dodoro made headlines for his ambitious list of trade targets at Carlton in exchange for Adam Saad, sources said a similar collection of bold targets were put across the Lions’ desk despite Daniher’s restricted free agency status.

Ahhhh, now thats the Jackets we all know and love. :hearts:
Why are Brisbane even talking to them about trades I would be making them go through the process of matching the Daniher bid first

Why did Daniher want to leave originally a year ago? Why does Saad want to leave? Is it directly because of Dodoro, or a number of other factors?

Player retention and keeping them happy enough to stay isn't really the list manager's role, beyond the mechanics of contracts, trades, etc. That's on the player themselves, and their happiness with the city they're in, their personal life, their medical situation, their teammates, and coaches.
I agree with this, it's not just Dodoro's fault, but the aggressive and ridiculous posturing such as asking for McKay or Curnow is ridiculous.

You want to get McKay or Curnow in return for Saad? You start by convincing McKay or Curnow - like the Dogs did with Boyd / Griffen.

Yes. That was the obvious and official line.

T101:
BUT... the biggest trade of the period, was being held up (it had to happen first) and so it put pressure on Carlton.
To their credit they didn't buckle.

Papley apologized to the team, knuckled down, had his best year and is happily a l/t contracted Swan

AND Swans dodged the bullet but kept Daniher RFA options possible ( later circumstances made it less desirable)

Yeah but that's ok because he's really only aiming to get McLuggage and Cameron.
They don’t seem to get that it doesn’t matter who they ask for even if the other club agreed with there demands that no half decent player will have any interest whatsoever in going to them in a trade with how there being ran at the moment the best they can hope for is getting the best draft picks possible

The papley deal was agreed to buy Sydney and Carlton Sydney offered the picks they would have had to Essendon they said no Sydney were only ever going to trade papley if the Daniher deal was given the green light

1. True, I agree
2. I agree

3. Way too late, and did not help whatever else was the 'other' issues JD obviously had/has which escaped list management and club proper attention.

4. Strongly Disagree. Had Essendon even spoken to the lad?
Northern state's required development projects, ought be off the table IMHO

Not necessarily ******* the other clubs around, but I'd say that unless Sydney had put a ridiculous, never seen before, offer on the table, it wasn't going to happen.
I would consider a top 10 pick and a top 5 pick for a guy who had/has a serious injury cloud a ridiculous, never before seen offer.

But no, Dodoro wanted Heeney or Parker wasnt it? Did he bother to approach their managers and see if they were interested or did he expect Sydney to convince them?

Sydney would have known that Daniher was unlikely to get done unless they offered something silly, and given they didn't, they'd have known they weren't going to do the Papley trade.

It would have been Sydney & EFC both knowing it was pretty unlikely, which means Sydney also knew Papley was pretty unlikely unless Carlton upped their offer to something silly.

4. Strongly Disagree. Had Essendon even spoken to the lad?

No idea if they'd spoken to him, it would be quite common with later selections (he went at 37) not to have spoken. Also totally disagree with the second part. Coleman grew up in Brisbane, no way known should clubs get a free pass on good players. I'd expect the same to occur for any club, plenty of GWS academy players have been bid on by other clubs for example.

What a load of rubbish - "something silly" for an long term injured guy who wants out and only had until they were a RFA? Two good firsts was already way silly enough for anyone but Dodoro. Sydney were actually thinking that they'd offer overs so they could the deal done early and then move onto getting something good for Papley.

Anyway, it's all worked out well for Sydney. Essendon on the other hand...

I think given the list management decisions made at the end of 2017 (Saad, Smith & Stringer) and 2018 (Shiel) were based upon Daniher's (and to a lesser extent, Fantasia and the general forward-line's) 2017 form and trajectory that Daniher notifying the club 5 days prior to trade period beginning, was never really going to result in a trade that worked against a multi-year trade and draft strategy unless it's was an absolutely obscene offer.
Daniher looking for a trade was seen miles out from trade week last year. A five second search has turned up this dated Sep 12 2019:

Not preparing for that eventuality until a week out from trade week is negligence or, at best, utter stupidity.

In which universe did this take place? How is offering TWO top ten picks "not trying all that hard?"

Sydney and Carlton had an agreed deal in place pretty much on day one, but it depended on the Daniher to Sydney happening.

Then Dodoro did what Dodoro does, and all three clubs are the worse for it.

Carlton loses Papely. NO RESULT
Essendon loses TWO top ten draft picks and still loses Daniher. MAJOR LOSS
Sydney loses Daniher* LOSS

What a masterclass in how not to play the trade game.

Lets contrast that with how Wells would have handled it. Take the good offer as quick as possible. Play a bit of 3D chess with the two top tens (using good will gained in the past with other Clubs, and trade in a player you want - and still have enough left over to nab a role filler / project player or two.

Carlton gains Papely MAJOR WIN
Sydney gains Daniher WIN
Essendon gains two top tens (still loses Daniher). MAJOR WIN
Three list managers happy with each other, trust built, more open to future co-operation.

Not only has your man cost the Club two top ten picks, he has further reinforced the feeling the rest of the list managers in League have for him: if his brain was on fire you wouldn't bother pissing in his ear to put it out.

Asking for either of two of the best key forward prospects in the league in return for a 26yo half-back flanker is ridiculous and aggressive, even if you ask nicely.

He didn't actually request a trade until almost a month after that, for a start.

Even then, a month to basically revamp your entire trading and list management strategy for the past 3 years?

It's easy in hindsight, but Papley is now quite happy at Sydney after requesting a trade last year, so it's clearly possible for players to change their minds.

But people don't actually want to discuss the topic, as Yoda_ said the other day.

Well said.
Its evident he’s learnt zero from last year...Carlton give him a deadline (end next week) or he’s heading to PSD...even at cost of not getting him.

Rohan Connolly and Mark Fine give him a serve on the latest footyology podcast. Calling him 'rude' and a 'pain in the arse' etc (at about 12:30 into the Podcast). Rohan's an Essendon supporter I believe.

You'd think if any recruiter from any other club behaved like he has in his recent dealings with Carlton they'd immediately be shown the door. It's just so obvious now that he's incompetent.

Dodoro asking for the moon, the sun and the entirety of Orion's belt for his players. Colour me shocked.

Sooner or later Essendon will realise that these mind games aren't getting them anywhere. The Daniher debacle should have told them everything. Saad is not worth pick seven and, sure, Brisbane's offer isn't great, but a) Essendon don't have leverage given Daniher doesn't want to be a bomber and b) they're not the first team to suffer because a player has nominated one specific team.
