Horrible at landing big name recruits from other clubs.
Nothing wrong with trying to push the best deal when players leave.
Dodoro has been good at selecting talent in the draft.
With 5 in the AA team this year originally selected by him (although one is a F/S in Daniher).
Ideally would just want Dodoro overseeing drafting and not trade negotiations at Essendon.

Everybody that works in the AFL hates Dolmio Dodoro. Constantly overrates his players and underrates every other team's players.

We have a poster on our board who gets regular insights about the club. Says that Dodoro is one of the most highly respected list managers in the league.

To be fair to Adrian, he has never been one to trade or do that "godfather" deal that has seen clubs like Carlton and Collingwood sell the farm for one or two players.

The targets we've gone after:
Jaeger - Opted for the hawks over us. Kinda glad he did.
Caddy - He wanted to come, we offered more than he was worth. What can you do.
Jaeger cost too much. Caddy would have cost too much

Smith - Opted for the Cats over us. Never got to negotiations.
Garlett - Opted for the Dees over us. Never got to negotiations.
Would put this down to not being a destination club at the time. Dodoro was hamstrung at this point.

Gunston - Not sure how much we pursued and whether we got far given the hawks.
As above, plus the hawks approached first and pursued harder. Hird wasn't overly enthused at the time from what i hear.

Hartlett - Didn't want to leave Port.
Boak - Stayed with Port.
Mundy - Stayed with Freo
Gaff - Stayed with Eagles.
Never got to negotiations

We jerked the Dogs around on West back in 04 and played funny games for Alvey first time around if i recall (the whole fax thing)
I feel we get our reputation from that.
Zac Smith? We got our first choice in Leuenberger and told him that we wouldn't trade for him.

In saying that, I hope Stringer nominates Essendon so we can watch another s**t storm: Bevo v The Dodo
False. I know for a fact that Melbourne deal with him more than amicably, as do many other clubs.

Has been the list manager at Essendon since February 1998. As List Manager he presided over two drafts before their all-conquering side won the 2000 premiership taking the comp by storm. In 98-99 he recruited good players like McVeigh, Ramanauskas, Hille, Barnes (re-joining) and Podsiadly (0 Ess games). Of that Ramanauskas and Barnes played in the 2000 premiership. So his effect on the flag isn't exactly profound.

Only Gold Coast have not won a final more recently than the Bombers, and they haven't played in one. Yes, all other 16 clubs have won a final more recently, and some have been pretty poor run clubs for sustained periods. Yet not as bad as the Bombers, seemingly.

Last trade period he was lauded for his haul in the trade period yet after tonight's loss it'll be the 10th year without finals for Essendon, in the last 14 seasons, since their last finals success. s**t! He even got a promotion this year to the Bombers Executive Team. Why?

Why is he seemingly regarded so highly internally, and by bomber fans given the sustained lack of verifiable football results to back up his list building work? I just don't get the hype. Why hasn't some serious pressure on his position been put on him? Nearly 15 years without a win in September. This wouldn't fly at other big clubs like the Pies, Hawks, Blues etc.

It’s a bit misleading looking at the last 14 years without context. You need to consider the unique challenges he faced.

Dodoro’s effort since 2000 was to rebuild a list post Sheedy. That era was to bear fruit in that period from around 2011 onwards however we all know what happened in 2012 and the subsequent distractions throughout 2012-6, turmoil and in part breaking away of that group towards 2015-6.

Whilst sort of pointless, add back Ryder, Hibberd, Carslile to that side.

Then you need to consider Dodoro had to work with many lost draft picks due to penalties. He lost the clubs first and second round picks in 2013 and the first rounder in 2014.. This as a result took away his ability to trade players in and out of the club.. So with the loss of three experienced and valuable players, the loss of crucial picks and ability to trade, he has really been fighting with an arm behind his back.... despite the limitations he’s made the most of his selections.

2013 - Merritt (26), Fantasia (55), Ambrose (rookie draft). Brilliant haul with limited low picks
2014 - Langford, Laverde, Mc Kernan (rookie) and Mc Kenna (rookie). A great haul. Laverde will be a very good player once / if can get past injuries.
2015 - Parish, Francis, Redman, Tippa (rookie). All of these are on track for good - great careers.
2016 - Mc Grath, Ridley, Draper (rookie). Draper young tuck developing well, Ridley very talented but physically raw still.

Then he’s trading well which goes without saying....

He has done a very good job in a general sense since 2013 if you Look at it. Any list manage makes the odd blue but Dodoro has done very well.

All in all you can see why he’s highly respected. Under the circumstances he’s doing a great job. This current Essendon list is without doubt the most promising since that 2000 period.

Everything points to a strong era as long as current development continues to plan (1) and another strong midfielder is traded in over the next two years (2) as key milestones.

Sheedy held the reigns firmly until he left, plus it's not Dodos fault we lost top liners like Ryder, Carlisle and Hibberd. Under performed in a few drafts, but he's drafted a bundle of AA quality players recently, he can't make them deliver though.

Pretty easy to see, he’s great at drafting/recruiting. Second most AAs on list plus another few out there he drafted in Ryder and Hibberd. Unfortunately the only thing he’s poor at is inside midfielders and they are so important to winning finals. We should probably outsource those picks and let him do the rest especially defenders.

Now the footy/finals are done and dusted for another year , really looking forward to Adrian's time in the sun again.
He's a star and the main attraction in the post season whirlwind ... Long live the king !!!
Agreed.

Very promising thread.

He`s seemingly great at drafting top end talent but he doesn't build lists with any depth. Hence why when Essendon have had some rotten luck with injuries in the past decade seasons have gone to pieces instead of just being steady (in comparison to say Pies this year - going to finish mid range in finals instead of capitulating).

To be fair we’ve had decent depth this year.

Also while here posting yes his record of no finals wins in years speaks for itself, the whole “he`s hard to deal with” is the most frustrating bullshit to hear. Even for a Carlton fan I get more annoyed hearing that rubbish thrown about than I do people saving Carlton's issues all relate to SoS and his GWS players.

1) getting the best deal for your club is vital. Ask for a high price to start sometimes the other club will blink (Weller for pick 2)
2) he gets more than his fair share of deals done, can't be that hard
3) one of the most talked about `hard to deal with` deals was 19 and Hooker for Caddy which was incredibly fair especially when you see he went for a first round pick alone in the end (works out about even factoring in contract situations)

It's just the most insane bizarre criticism especially when there's plenty legitimate ones too.

It's an interesting one given the last build, wiped out by the saga, was (over)filled with big, one-paced midfielders. As a broad point though, absolutely - it's a list with serious talent yet also clear gaps.

I think the opposite to the first line. Great at building depth but hasn’t had a truly generational talent maybe Jobe but even he was a father son and can’t be claimed by Adrian. I just believe that elite inside midfielders are so important to team success that all the depth in the world can’t overcome in the crucible of finals.
