You have no comprehension of broadband usage vs. dial-up usage then do you?

Others say you can multiply it by 10 times even, 5 times is being conservative

I d/l around 16-18gb a month on cable and only ever did 1.5-2gb max on dialup such is the speed difference

Maybe he should go for one of those 3gb a month "deals" and then he *might* understand what you are saying ;)

Sort of like comparing a Volkswagen to a Ferrari isn't it?

Look for longevity in the ISP business. But most of them are reselling either Telstra or Optus services (DSL). There are other DSL providers such as XYZed and Request DSL but they essentially wholesale.

If you want DSL.....shop around. If you want cable then i think most people would agree that OPTUS is the best value.

3gb is not much......if you are using a modem that's a lot because of the time it takes to d/l crap. Otoh, if you've got a connection with grunt you start to become a bit like a kid in a candy shop and before you know it 3gb is used up very quickly. 10gb is a more realistic amount of traffic if you are into d/l mp3's and game demo's.

If you are unsure of your own technical capabilites, get it right the first time by having it installed for you.

It's worth it because:
1. You get to use what you are paying for straight away.
2. If it keels over, then the provider will have to fix it. If you install it and it doesn't work, who are you gonna turn to for immediate rectification?

Forget about asking here for detailed information on how to fix your problem.......it's too slow and inefficient. Nothing beats someone being at your computer and fixing the problem for something that could be that serious.

Cheers, Roofus - You're a gun!

Optus said I'm not in one of their cabled areas (even though my neighbour's got it  ), so no go with them.

I'm currently downloading about 300mb a month so i don't think I'll need 10gb ... but the movie downloads might get a run if I get broadband, so I'll keep my options re plans open. Out of interest, how big would a game of footy be?

Anyway, will take your advice and get it done professionally.

Thanks again.

mate i think you have the brain of an ewok! My thread is titled ADSL v's Dial-up. I dont give a rats arse about your cable and what you can download! Ive had optus cable and know what its all about! Ive downloaded movies with cable. Big deal! The reason why I started this thread was to learn more about ADSL, as it is the only option away from dial-up that I have at the present time. so quit ya tossing about cable!

Listen here you Fu**in D**khead, the thread has changed since your original post, and that's what I'm following.

Broadband comes in all shapes and sizes, do you want me to start on LMDS? Frame Relay? ATM? FDDI?
STM1? then again you probably don't know what they are.

I'll also add PAPL, SHDSL, DDS Fastway and good 'ole ISDN just to wet your appetite.

If you want to know more as to what they are and their related capacities/capabilities then I'd suggest you go have a look at Cisco.com.

It's VERY heavy reading if you are not technically minded, and has an enormous amount of information.

As for me? well it's all part of what I do :)

It wouldn't have a maximum speed of 28.8k would it? If so....time to upgrade to a 56k modem (it's twice as fast...theoretically).

Phone lines in australia can only handle around 33 kps per second anyway so a 33kb modem would be fine, and you would probably find not that much faster than your reliable 28.8 one you have now.

if you do decide ona newie may I suggest it be a Rockwell make.

good day

Don't know where you get your facts from buddy, I'm a network engineer and I'm telneted into the router my modem has connected to......49333

Looking at the other connections on this router and what do i see? lots of > 44k connections.

Maybe the problem you experience is due to the type of Telstra exchange you connect to (yes there are different types).
