Tassie needs a team Gil.

People will watch. Some people might even buy 2 memberships one for the new team and one for their original team.

Just make sure their night games are early and late in tbe season and day games during winter.

To go back to advantages - they really only happen if 2 teams are added. Another game each week can be calculated financially pretty well.
I think Canberra as the other permanent location for a side has some legs - as the national capital.
A full time Tasmanian side will be good for footy in the State - it is already a footy State, having a home team will galvanize that and we will start to see more players come through again. Maybe we will end up with 10 team finals?
Have to be realistic though. Another 2 teams with high travel costs will not help. This will be more travel for a lot of players. Both areas have populations of about half a million - but spread widely. Sponsorship may be tough for the clubs. Tassie may support the club enough financially for the AFL - but will Canberra be able to do it (need 20th club)?

I doubt Canberra will get its own team in the next 50 years.

Far more likely (for the 20th new Club) is a combined new "South Sydney Canberra" team -the 'BURRAS (aka Kookaburras); or Cannons.
Wealthy Sydney will have a population (according to ABS) of nearly 8,000,000 by 2050, & has most top corporate/media/advertising HQ's; Canberra has the political power brokers, & the highest median wages in Aust.

Gameday Lists should be 20 only (18 +2 reserves/subs.). Slash AFL funding for AFL Clubs &, similarly, football dept. spending (but not player wages), with a much smaller FD cap.
This will make more AFL Clubs more financially sustainable; and free-up AFL spending on GR, especially new female GR facilities & toilets, where ultimately over $1 billion will need to be spent on many hundreds of ovals, Australia-wide.
(Ivanhoe FC in 2017 spent $1,800,00 on its new female-friendly clubrooms, & Oakleigh FC-both VAFA- in 2018 spent $2,800,000)

EDIT:
In March 2017, there was then a current shortage of 90-120 AF ovals in Vic. (& a shortage of 75 in Melb.).
It remains to be seen how many schools are able or willing to share their ovals on weekends -but this does not resolve the problem of inadequate female facilities at traditional GR AF pavilions.

All this is predicated on the current population growth & its distribution & the economy continuing on it 25 year growth path.

Sure the AFL need to have some bright & breezy plans for the future, but unlike on BF, it really needs to be prudent with all such bright forecasts.

The current overseas net population growth numbers are under huge political pressure. Also where that population goes, is under political pressure to not be so Melbourne/Sydney centric.

The Australian economy has been on a long growth curve. A record breaking curve of over 25 years. That will not continue. It never does. The world economies are in a worrying time with talk of tariff & trade wars. As an export nation, that puts us in the firing line.

Even the huge changes in disruptive media technologies could affect media rights in ways not really seen as yet.

So charge forth, wearily!
