I really hope and pray we don't use our first pick on a tall.
At pick 8 or 9 it will be our best chance to get a quality KPP .......so i hope we do

I'll definitely say NO to Durdin .......your bigmen have to be a bit nasty/arrogant or they don't survive AFL intensity & big bodies

Durdin .....looks skinny with a frame that may not beef up and he plays a style of footy that is so Vickery in comparison ....no physicality or agro in his game

If we could get Hugh Goddard that would be a huge win

Others i don't know much about YET

Angwin, Watts, Meesen, Sellar - anti-talls with a 1st round pick. We don't have the luxury of being able to waste this years picks and talls with a 1st rounder are a greater risk. Must go midfielder.
Angwin and watts could play - they would have been seriously good AFL players if their body didn't let them down.

Meesen development was stuffed by Neil Craig as he was a play and play ruckman from day one but we left him in the reserves and his development was stopped fir close to 3 years.

Sellar was our only wasted pick via the players inability to adapt to the level.

But I blame the club for the lack of development, not the players. We should never have drafted john Meesen when we were nit going to play him. We should have known about Angwin mental issues before hand and ignored him in the draft and watts killed his ankle at st kilda.

If we need a KPP and we have to drsft him early, we must play them. Drafting someone and not playing them is just a waste, especially if they are ready to play.

Kind of reminds me of Mooney, who wasn't a super-star of the game, but was instrumental in developing the tough winning culture in the Geelong team.

A very good thread. Few things to mention first up -
  • We have a good/very good list, but what we do not have is a great list.
  • From a totally realistic point of view....very, very few young AFL players want to live in Adelaide. And if it wasn't for the concessions given to Goldcoast (no disrespect), only slightly more AFL players want to live in QLD than in Adelaide. That's why The Lions are up against it as well.
If you do not agree with both those points above - duly noted, but there's absolutely no point in reading any further, cos it'll only be a total waste of your time.

The reality of the AFL at the moment is that most young AFL players want to live on the East Coast, and they want to play for either The Swans (because of their f*ckin' ridiculous Salary Cap concessions), or the Victorian power clubs -
  • Collingwood
  • Hawthorn
  • Carlton
  • Geelong
  • Essendon (before the supplements debacle)

Because of this, simply having a Salary Cap and Draft is woefully, woefully inadequate. Keeping the status quo is playing right into the hands (and pockets) of the six clubs listed above.

Please take a look at these three posts - they've raised some very valid points -

I gotta make it loud and clear that I am a huge supporter of Free Agency, and then some. Why? Because once a player has put his time in and chalked up a certain number of seasons/games, he should have a full choice in where he gets to play and how much money he earns.....but only once he has reached the level of an unrestricted Free Agent, and not a moment sooner. But Free Agency needs to go hand-in-hand with what is mentioned in the first post above, regarding to the Trade system in American Sports Leagues. When players enter the AFL Draft, they have absolutely no say whatsoever in which club they play for - not the slightest bit of say or influence whatsoever. But nowadays, the moment a player gets Drafted, they almost immediately want to start dictating terms on where they get to play - this is utterly absurd, and it's seriously affecting the SA and QLD based Clubs, as I've mentioned above. The reality is The Crows are a team that's based in a city that most young AFL players wouldn't piss on. And for this very reason, we need to change two things -
  • We need to focus more on recruiting SA-born players....with friends and family living in Adelaide. While this should be a priority, it unfortunately reduces our player options drastically (Adelaide has a tiny population, and because of sheer weight of numbers, most of the AFL talent is found outside our borders).
  • A system where players can be Traded against their will....while they're still in contract to a Club. Not a very nice approach? Duly noted, but I do not care one iota.
And when the AFL Players' Association (undoubtedly) kicks up an almighty stink, all the AFL needs to do is point to Free Agency, and tell the Players' Association to piss off. And immediately threaten legal action.
And we need to be aggressive with players in the last year of their contracts - their needs to be an unwritten rule etched in stone at the Crows - if they don't sign by mid-season, Trade them. Simple. We only need to look at what happened with TidBit and Gunston. Dangermouse, Sloane Ranger, and Tex are absolute Guns, and I want to keep them....but I wonder how Crows supporters would feel if they walked to another Club?
The bottom line is that The Crows are seriously up against it, in terms of attracting players. It's not about The Crows, it's about getting blokes to live in Adelaide, and unfortunately a "nice, soft, respectful" system towards individual players does not help us. Where we're at now shows this in big, bold, glaring, neon lights. We've busted our arses for decades to get some quality Key Forwards, and the two previous Key Forwards we managed to recruit pissed off to the Eastern States as soon as they could. The next quality player we get that wants to jump ship at the end of his first contract - we should go out of our way to make his playing future (before he reaches Free Agency) an absolute misery.
I'd even go so far as scrutinising his off-field interests and plans. Ditched his last partner, when everything was going well? He's earning over $400k and won't buy a house in Adelaide? He's very vague and cagey about what he wants to do? What do you reckon that tells you? He doesn't want to live in Adelaide!
I'd completely ignore his requests on a target Club - I'd either Trade him to whichever club offers us the best deal, or dump him in the Draft. Sure, it won't do us any good in the short term, but it will send a big, loud message to our future rookies - look to jump ship at the end of your first contract, and we'll make it our personal interest to stuff you up as much as possible. This will help us in the longterm, no end (an approach that is sorely lacking at this Club). If we dropped just one or two Gun players in the Draft, we wouldn't have to do it a third time....I'd bet the house on it. I honestly don't think there are too many blokes that want to get picked up by GWS, Melbourne, or the Lions in The Draft at the moment.

There are only two things I am interested in, in the AFL -
  • The Crows winning more Flags
  • A realistic approach to making this happen
Anything else is just window dressing, and nothing more.

We're in an utterly ruthless, cut-throat competition that does not even resemble a level playing field. In this situation, a softly, softly, "individuals first" approach to Drafting, Trading, and List Management is not helping us. At the next Trade and Draft periods, I'm praying to the Lord Almighty that we can secure some A1 Quality OUTSIDE Mids with both serious pace and razor-sharp foot skills. Another two or three Eddie Betts types, but young and with endurance. In terms of Drafting and Trading, everything else needs to take second place.

I think we should move on Gorringe this year. Not getting a game at GC as they have some super young talls there. Would cost us a third rounder maybe. Rumour has it he was thinking of coming back before but hes part of that church group Ablett has set up at the GC and so stayed.
We need some hard defender in the Jonas/Hombsh mold, another ruck prospect, a KPP, some outside pace and a rebounder in the Smith mold.

Yep. I'm hoping we have another 2012 type offseason where they target/brought in high draft picks from 2-3 years ago who weren't getting games with guys like Lynch and Johnston. Gorringe, Jon O'Rourke, Jimmy Toumpas, Tim Broomhead types.

Some of the players I think we should target and would possibly be gettable

James Frawley - can never have to many gun KPP

Shaun Higgins - if his body holds up could use his outside run and foot skills

James Gwilt - solid 3rd tall not sure how old he is but could probably be got for the right price

Shane Edwards - very good forward pressure and can push into the middle for spurts

Nathan Foley - Has great run and carry which we sorley lack

Jimmy Tompuas - Great skills high draft pick who hasn't reached his potential

We need James Aish, kids going to be sooooo good it's not funny. I'm a huge fan, also to the guy that's mentoring him.. You're doing a fantastic job.

Aish's mentor is Ablett Jnr.

Watched Kyle Martin in the VFL today. We should be moving a good portion of heaven and earth to get this kid, far too good to be playing in the reserves comp.

http://www.collingwoodfc.com.au/player-profile/kyle-martin

An inside midfielder with a booming right foot and sure hands overhead, Martin impressed greatly in his 13 VFL games in 2013. He earned some big possession tallies and regularly impacted on the scoreboard despite being heavily tagged each week. He broke through to play senior football mid-season and did not look out of place. His hard-nosed approach and appetite for goals will make him a player to watch in 2014.

SEASON BY SEASON
Martin’s meteoric rise from local football to the biggest stage of all was one of the best stories of 2013. Collingwood snaffled him with its first selection in last December’s Rookie Draft after initial interest from Essendon and Melbourne and he quickly set about making a name for himself as a proven ball magnet. He was given an opportunity in the NAB Cup and quickly looked at home, averaging 12 disposals and winning four clearances against the Eagles in Perth. The ex-Frankston centreman burst out of the blocks at VFL level, winning 34 possessions and kicking three goals in the first round win over North Ballarat. It prompted opposition teams to start paying closer attention and Werribee and Frankston were able to restrict him to only 29 disposals across the next fortnight. He sprung to life with 36 touches against Bendigo and rarely let up, saving his best for Essendon in round seven when he had 29 possessions, won 10 clearances and kicked six goals from the midfield. The match committee put him straight on the plane to the Gabba to take on Brisbane the following Friday and he did not look out of place, gathering 19 possessions, laying six tackles and kicking two goals from four scoring shots. Martin held his place in the side for the next three games, booting three goals against Melbourne on the Queen’s Birthday. His run came to an end when he was substituted out of the match against Port Adelaide during the third quarter, leaving him to spend the remainder of the season accumulating big numbers in the VFL. He almost singlehandedly dragged the Magpies over the line against North Ballarat and was one of the best afield in the loss to Port Melbourne in the Elimination Final despite receiving close attention from his Borough opponents. Martin’s fine season was capped off when he won the Joseph Wren Memorial Trophy as Collingwood’s best-and-fairest VFL player, while he also received nine votes in the J.J. Liston Trophy across the course of the year.

He may be an inside mid, but he isn't a plodder like Matt Crouch or Scott Thompson. He definitely has some toe and gets himself clear of contests with short bursts.
