It's not often I agree with Rooch but there is one thing he is bang on the money about. When we adopted FA based on the US sports, we neglected a key counter balance for clubs, the right to dictate a trade - even if restricted only to the year prior to FA.

For all we know Dangers management may have told us he has no intention of staying past next year, but that he will be exercising his right to play out his contract and assess the FA auction which will occur between likely suitors Hawks and cats.

If that's the case then Melb could be offering half their list and it would not matter - we would still be restricted to releasing a statement that he is not for trade.

AFC may well be hamstrung in this scenario, despite "eyeballing" him and getting no commitment
How does this "right to dictate a trade" work in the US? Does the player say I want $xxxx and the club can swap them to any club willing to pay $xxxx? Even if not in the city they want to move to?

I agree with most of this, but it's still in his best interests to request a trade now than play out the year to exercise FA rights. We could match any offer (I think we would if it came to that) and then if he still wants go somewhere else, he'd be the exact same position as he's in now.
^ This - If he did that to us, no worries, match the contract and trade him away.

If this offer from the Dees is legit, and thats if, then there maybe some fire to it. The Dees can talk to the Crows as much as they want, they can offer us Picks 2, 3, 12, Viney, Hogan, Tyson and Salem, but if Danger says no then there is no point. In other words The Dees would have spoken to Danger and his Manager 100 times and if they had of been told "no, Dangers not leaving the Crows and he doesnt want to play for you" then they wouldnt keep offering shit to The Crows. If however they offered a Godfather offer to Danger and he said "you have to convince Adelaide now" then they would come back with what they have, if they have.

2, 3, 12 and Toumpas, just to get us to shout them a coffee.
If we got a trade like this there would be some nervous guys at the club still, we would need to make a delisting or 2 more as we would have 4-5 active draft picks based on their positions.. (In saying that, no chance Melb would offer this, I still doubt they have put 2-3-12 table, nevertheless just 2&3)

How is it in his best interests to go now? His best interest is to wait for next years auction and find out his true market worth.

Right now he's only guessing.

If you were selling your house by auction and there were 3/4 cashed up registered bidders - would you sell to an early offer?

And if he does a knee/shoulder next year? His value maybe halves..

To be honest I'm not precisely certain of how it's structured - I'm sure someone here would be.

The bottom line is that a club can inform a player that they have been traded.

I think all we need is something in the year before FA. Then if a club made a massive trade offer and the player is not committing then pack your bags

Don't care if it's popular opinion or not. IF the dees actually offered 2,3 and 12 then take it and run.

That's the kind of trade that can 1) rectify much of the draft sanctions and 2) be looked back on one way or another as a pivotal moment in a clubs tilt at a flag. Yes draft picks can be a crap shoot but the fact you've got so many chances to snaffle the best young talent gives you every opportunity to succeed.

If we trade the picks on, it snares us a bloke in the ilk of a Cameron who in all reality holds more value than Dangerfield. I love Danger but he's a prime candidate for a body that breaks down early from the rigours of footy.

Some fans on here are way too trusting of a bloke 'informing the club' that he wants to stay. It's amazing how much an extra 500k can sway a blokes loyalty.

Do the trade.

Houses don't run head first into other houses on a weekly basis, whatever he'd lose in going early (peanuts I suspect, he'd already know exactly what he's worth) he gains in security.

Sure no doubt - I just don't think that's what his manager would advise.

Then also it's - go now to Melb, or wait a year and walk to Haw/gee

No brainer

You just need to look at the EPL as to how things will end up here, Manchester Teams, Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal, To a lesser extent, Tottenham and Everton... They are the clubs always fighting it out and the order only changes between them for the top 6 most of the time, because of free agency, the smaller teams will NEVER will the title, those 6 will always battle it out, awesome we will have that here if you are one of those 4-6 teams.. Otherwise, take up lawn bowls cause it's going to be that exciting for your team.

Clearly that's too far the other way.

FA is ok, just needs some tweaks to help the clubs

Hopefully Cheney paid for the coffee... Seriously, we better not be getting him for anything more than pick 40+
Agree we shouldnt be paying much, but he was good last year when they were lacking backs.
Would be a good 2nd/3rd defender.

Yeah but this is where it looks to be heading though.. Difference is there is no cap there, i'm sure we will always have a cap of some sort. (they have just bought in Financial Fair Play rules for the Champions League and heaps of teams are failing that already)
