It's not often I agree with Rooch but there is one thing he is bang on the money about. When we adopted FA based on the US sports, we neglected a key counter balance for clubs, the right to dictate a trade - even if restricted only to the year prior to FA.

For all we know Dangers management may have told us he has no intention of staying past next year, but that he will be exercising his right to play out his contract and assess the FA auction which will occur between likely suitors Hawks and cats.

If that's the case then Melb could be offering half their list and it would not matter - we would still be restricted to releasing a statement that he is not for trade.

AFC may well be hamstrung in this scenario, despite "eyeballing" him and getting no commitment
If we know that for sure...then we "tank" next year to get a decent compo pick (6th if we finish 14th) for him.

Not trading boyd because Cameron is gone...? ;)
I think this could be a big chance! We have been deafly quiet this trade week maybe there is something to Dangerfield to Melb Cameron to us it makes no sense for Melb to offer anything to us unless we have given them some indication we would come to the table

I may be wrong but i swear i can remember Noble on TWR saying to trade Danger it would need to be something rediclous like 3 first round picks & that the chances of being offered that were highly unlikely..... What if we told Melb this is what it would take?

This is what shits me though. Tom Boyd hasn't even been in the AFL system for 5 minutes and he's requesting a trade to a certain club. It's bullshit.
yet this is what we are hoping aish will do

I agree that all players are now acting as free agents by nominating a club, doesn't seem fair on the clubs at all. Free agency is a reward for long service.

Perhaps a fairer solution would be for players who want to leave to nominate a state (now each state has two teams) to create some competition/bidding.
Your first sentence is right, make FA more about what it is for, veterans. Age of 30 regardless of years of service. Our FA is stupid, gun footballers in their prime just walking out.

I'm not. I hate the current climate of players picking certain clubs and giving their clubs nothing to work with. O'Rouke, a second year player who has hardly played, requesting a trade to the premiers. Really? The clubs are being held to ransom by players who have done nothing in return for giving them a shot.

I doubly hate this happening when they're contracted.
