team of the year, half way through this year:
695560

695561

695562

695563

AFTER each round, fierce debate ensues in the AFL.com.au office to assemble the Team of the Week, brought to you by AccorHotels.
Journalists who cover games use their expertise to recommend who deserves to be in the elite side, while the tireless production editors, who watch more matches than anyone else, help whittle that list down to 22.
Based on how many nominations each player has had this season, a mid-year All Australian team has been formed.
Now, it's not a perfect exercise. Six clubs are yet to have their bye, skewing the numbers.
There was also the issue of splitting players when they had an equal amount of nominations. In those situations, the individual who has lined up in fewer games this season was picked.
For example, Richmond superstar Dustin Martin and gun Adelaide onballer Brad Crouch have each scored four nominations, but the former got the nod because he has played 12 times, compared to the Crow's 13.
The line-up has been picked relatively true to position. Marcus Bontempelli and Stephen Coniglio stationed on half-forward flanks might raise eyebrows, but each has spent enough time in attack to justify those spots.
However, that principle left one individual very stiff: Travis Boak. His form has been unbelievable, and his five nominations reflects his tremendous output.
There's a fair argument to say he should be in the starting 18 over Bontempelli, who has been nominated four times.
That choice was made because Boak is more of a pure onballer. But then, why did breakout Geelong star Tim Kelly, who was nominated on the same number of occasions as Boak, pip the revitalised Port midfielder as rover?
It came down to Kelly leading AFL.com.au's Brownlow Predictor and the Coaches' Association Player of the Year Award.
That might be unfair logic to apply, because those awards perhaps shouldn't have any relevance to this exercise, but there had to be some determining factor.
Max Gawn was also unlucky. His five nominations are equal for second-most, but since most sides field just one ruckman, Brodie Grundy's six prior selections edged him out.
Number of nominations

Boak should be in over Ablett.
Keath should be in over Darcy Moore too, because I'm biased, though in reality I think they're neck and neck
Brouch... is next cab off the rank for the midfield.

1: Lance Franklin - 9 games, injured most of the time
2: Robbie Gray - 18 games, very good year but not AA quality, will feature high in the B&F
3: Luke Parker - 21 games, would be right up there in the B&F at Sydney but that's about it
4: Jack Steven - 6 games, epic fail, hasn't played
5: Josh P. Kennedy - 18 games, decent year and will feature in the B&F, again that's it
6: Kane Lambert - 17 games, decent year but not the quality I wanted
7: Rory Lobb - 15 pretty average games, not the quality I wanted
8: Touk Miller - 17 games, unlucky with his injury, but it's Gold Coast so could still do well in the B&F
9: Tom Phillips - 21 games as I expected, been decent and should place in the B&F but that's it
10: Dylan Grimes - 20 games, excellent year, maybe AA squad but high in B&F
11: Nathan Wilson - 18 games, I'd have hoped for more, probably won't poll well in the B&F
12: Jarrod Berry - 17 games, would have liked more and due to that won't poll in the B&F all that well, Brisbane have had a good injury list
13: Rory Thompson - 0 games, ACL, unlucky
14: Caleb Daniel - 17 games and looked good, but cut down a bit from injury
15: Daniel Rich - 21 games, one of the best of his career, will poll high in the B&F, possible AA squad
16: Jarryd Lyons - 21 games, excellent season, another high B&F coming up
17: Tom Clurey - 21 games, happy with his selection
18: Dan Butler - 7 games, fail, become a depth player
19: Daniel McStay - 21 games but nothing phenomenal, role player
20: Rhys Stanley - 15 games, would have liked more and struggled for form
21: Jarrad McVeigh - 5 games, cooked
22: Marley Williams - 16 games, missed some through injury
23: Hunter Clark - 13 games, about what I wanted for an outside 22 player
24: Lochie O'Brien - 16 games, about what I expected
25: Nathan Brown - 15 games, decent for a depth player
26: Callum Ah Chee - 1 game, struggled
27: Sam J. Reid - 21 games, nothing spectacular and flies under the radar a bit, decent depth
28: Nathan Broad - 20 games, surprisingly good for what I thought would be depth
29: Ben Long - 15 games, about what I expected
30: Sam Wright - 4 games, depth

Total so far: 429 games (max 484)

I'm hoping to pick up another 20 games this weekend and then I'll have maybe 9 players in finals sides

My plan was to pick a squad that plays the maximum amount of games and that been a moderate success. But my top-end picks aren't going to win those top AFL awards which will pull my score down, I'll be lucky to get a single All Australian (maybe a few in the squad) or high Brownlow players. Might recover some of that with B&F placements and from having 10 players in the top 100 of the player ratings.

I don't think I'll three-peat it this year. Some strong teams out there, but also teams with no depth. So will be interesting

Zac Langdon only played 3 games and Bailey Dale just 9. Wouldn't call those especially good picks

So who had the best team?

Here's my read on it so far. Probably not accounting for a few awards given out so far.

Faith
1xAA, 1x AA squad, equal 5th ALFCA. Will have a couple of decent B&F finishes. Forwards disappointing, decent depth.

1990crow
2xAA, 1xAA squad. Equal 3rd and 7th in Coleman. Top end picks will do very well in B&F. Shaky depth, but strong middle of squad.

deaneus
1xAA, 1x AA squad, 6th and 11th Coleman. Depth very hit or miss, Mitchell out for the season stings massively

Scorpus
1xAA. Should have some strong B&F finishes, decent depth with lots of games played. Will struggle for big awards.

adelaidecrows
1xAA, 2xAA squad, 2nd ALFCA. Decent depth but will be relying on it, can't see too many high B&F finishes outside the obvious ones.

Danger Zone
1xAA squad. Looked good on paper but Oliver, Zorko and Sidebottom haven't delivered.

kulak
1xAA, 1st AFLCA. Bontempelli cleaned up. Other top picks might struggle to score big award points. Decent depth though

Freddy Bassett
1xAA, 3xAA squad, equal 3rd and 15th in Coleman. Decent depth, this is a strong team.

AdelaideFan14
1xAA, 2xAA squad, 4th AFLCA. Average depth and stung by injuries to Rance and Ward.

Danger in Texas
2xAA, 1xAA squad, 10th AFLCA. Depth is okay but this might hinge on some decent B&F results

Drugs are Bad Mackay?
1xAA, 2xAA squad, equal 3rd and 13th in Coleman. Curnow failing to fire will hurt, can't see too many B&F finishes, questionable depth

Daniel1812
2xAA squad, equal 7th Coleman. Think this team will struggle on depth.

Hank93
2xAA, equal 5th AFLCA, 9th Coleman. Think this is another team that will struggle on depth and B&F finishes

Kristof
2xAA. I can see a lot of strong B&F finishes here, but depth is questionable. Houli in the 17th round a steal.

Maggsy
2xAA squad, 2nd Coleman. The Crows not firing hurt top picks Laird and M. Crouch. Will struggle on B&F and depth

roo2macca
3xAA, 1xAA squad, 1st Coleman, 5th ALFCA. Cripps could win the Brownlow. Very strong awards team but depth really falls off. Will be interesting.

Mr MysteryGuest
2xAA, 10th and 12th Coleman. Heeney, McDonald and May all struggled for top picks. May struggle come depth time

I think it will be between 1990crow and Freddy Bassett. But it's hard to tell without seeing how each teams' depth goes because that's where it's won. roo2macca a smokey, he could have the Coleman and Brownlow medalists
