Nothing wrong with Pedlar, I’m actually pretty excited by him. Taking him at pick 9 is the problem. when Fox footy dont even have highlights on him available, and they do for the guy North took at pick 58, you do have to wonder if we have reached a bit.
Of course they wouldn't, most of us had rarely seen him play the last year or two unless you watch school footy where he was starring or watched the SANFL streams very early in the year but he was always considered one of the most talented of the SA boys coming through...when he actually got on the field. Playing A grade for Kingston as a 15 year old against the big strong country yokels in the Kowree Naracoorte Tatiara League is no mean effort even at that level...another in the long line of quality footballers from the South East.

completely agree - adding both Newchurch and Rowe is overkill, especially considering neither have a defensive bone in their body, and Stengle is not the best in that regard either. Rowe was a weird pick. Trading up for him? You can’t seriously tell me he wouldn’t have been available 4 picks later.

I think we might have been trading up with something else in mind that didn’t pan out, because that just makes zero sense.

All in all, the Cook pick saved our draft for mine.

Thilthorpe was meh - I personally liked Hollands and McDonald more. I get passing on Hollands due to the knee, I really do, but I don’t get taking Thilthorpe over McDonald, I really don’t.

Pedlar I quite like as a player but I would have preferred to trade down for him or take McInnes because Pedlar as the 9th non-academy player off the board is a pretty crazy reach for mine (he just looked more like a 20th best non-academy prospect to me). He’s certainly not done enough as a junior to warrant that draft range. Sure, maybe GWS were keen at one of their picks in the teens which is why we pulled the trigger rather than trading down with them or the Pies (there’s no way GWS were taking him ahead of Bruhn, I won’t buy that), but let them have Pedlar, and we can instead bid on McInnes at 11 and if Coll match, you take a Powell or Bruhn ahead of Pedlar for mine. There will be a lot of comparisons made between the careers of Bruhn, Powell and Pedlar for the next 5 years or so - I’d say we’re outsiders to come out smelling like roses there from what I’ve seen but let’s wait and see.

Cook at 25 I love - I was genuinely excited by this and reckon it was one of the steals of the whole draft. Carroll at 41 to Carlton has to take the cake though.

Berry I would have liked a lot more if we didn’t take Pedlar. Another TWO sub-185cm mids just doesn’t do it for me (1 would be fine) when we are getting consistently murdered by the Cripps / Fyfe / Bont types due to having no inside talls - yes I know we have Hately now but most clubs have about 3, and O’Connor is a long shot to ever reach 50 games at this point. In a vacuum though, Berry is a solid pick and will likely have a decent, yet not spectacular AFL career.

Rowe = a big no from me. You take Carroll 8 days a week here. Or Ford. I’d even be more on board with Kolar or Maher here than Rowe. Bizarre pick. Newchurch, Rowe and Stengle are 3 pegs that only fit into 2 list holes and 1 spot in the 22 for mine.
Even worse is that GC traded pick 27 for Melbourne’s 2021 3rd a few days ago with Geelong and yet we traded our 2021 3rd early in the draft for a 4 pick upgrade from 38 to 34. We could have traded that same pick to GC a few days ago and got 27 as our 3rd would obviously be preferable to Melbournes. We Coulnt have possibly know that who we wanted was going to be there after 8 picks in the draft tonight and not known it a few days ago so that means that we just totally stuffed that up.

also, if we had traded for GC’s 27, we could have secured Collingwoods 2021 1st, as we would have had better than GWS’s 24 and 30 (23 and 27) to offer, and still got the same players that we ended up taking. I don’t know who is supposed to be working out these things for us, but they are completely useless.

That's not true, we used a 4th round pick to make that upgrade. The 2020 3rd was to upgrade our pick to get Cook at 25

Certainly is a mans league, agree with that. I played a game with Andy Mackay down there, god must be 25 years ago, for Lucindale. And I’d been used to farmers over on the West Coast coast, but these guys were just huge and fast And nasty. Didn’t ever volunteer for a second.😂

Sorry, you are probably right. So we used a 2021 3rd and 4th to upgrade two picks a total of 6 spots, when we could have secured pick 27 for next years 3rd. Not sure that sounds better.

Interesting that Hamish said one of the main reasons of bidding on JUH was to deplete WB of picks so they wouldn't be able to draft Rowe - Hamish said they (and bLoos) were interested.

Indicates we had pretty strong interest in Rowe.

Also said Pedlar was absolutely rapt to be picked up by us.

I get what you’re saying but I think that says less about us and more of a reflection on how bad gc is at pick swaps.

Why are GWS still drafting SA kids, just punch yourself in the nuts if you want to hurt yourself so badly

It was weird seeing GWS use a pick in the 50s. What's the point? May as well delist the guy tomorrow. He isn't ever getting a game in that team.

Fair bit of genuine talent has just been added to our club.

Thilthorpe, Pedlar, Cook, all first round picks. Yes, Pedlar was seen as a bit of a stretch at pick 11, but still. Throw in Hately who will be here officially tomorrow, a former first round pick. I really like the look of Berry, Rowe is a goalkicking machine, and then Borlase and Newchurch as rookies. Don't mind the look of Hinge, either.

That's ten new players who are all exciting in their own way. Nine of them are SA boys, too. If we can turn, say, seven of them into long-term quality players, it will go a long way towards our rebuild.

Managed to do it all without trading away any of 2021 picks tied to us, too.

This draft has gone for 4 hours.

That's not proof that it should be done over 2 days. It's proof that they need to cut the time between picks, down from 5 minutes to 2.
Haha yes I saw that I thought my God what drugs are you on.

It's proof that they didn't rate any of the remaining players as being worthy of a position on an AFL list.

Mackay is clearly worthy of a position on an AFL list, given that he finished top-10 in our 2020 Club Champion, and was top-5 on a votes per game basis.

The hatred of Mackay, and overrating of youngsters who the professional talent scouts clearly don't rate, is beyond ridiculous.
So 1 more year of Mackay is worthy of that?

Anyone seen a comment from that Faith guy yet? His sauces had Thilthorpe slipping to our pick 9 and he was embarrassingly confident it was going to happen

Cost him at least $150 for that comment
Were we surprised ?

I especially liked the "Nobody else would draft him at 1"

Horrendously wrong

I’m sorry that’s actually pretty funny. Rowe fills a huge need? We have Stengle, Murphy, McHenry and are adding Newchurch tomorrow, but small forward is a huge need. Well the recruiting of those 4 can’t have been seen as very successful if that position is a huge need.
This was the main reason for my comments earlier in the thread - but a need?

A goal sneak wins you 1 or 2 games a season and we have 5

With all our talls we arent pushing them out so it leaves 2 spots for smalls. Stengle , McHenry and Murphy are the front runners there

Goals are a huge need, sounds like he does that better than what we have.

It looks a good draft to me and we addressed some real needs.
Got a small forward in Rowe who knows where the goals are, Newchurch will give us speed and Cook looks all class.
The midfield is a work in progress and some of the parts have been addressed.
Two bulls in Pedlar and Berry is a good start, both find the ball and don't take a backwards step.
Addressed a major need in the forward line with our first pick a quality tall and the pick of Borlase gives us more height in defense.
This is a good haul that next years draft will build upon.
We'll be very competitive next season as the competition in our squad has increased dramatically.
Add in Hately and Hinge and we are certainly heading in the right direction.
