Missing out on pick 1 in the rookie draft is pretty stupid in my opinion
It's a tough one. We probably would've taken Rowe as a rookie and upgraded Keays, but head Rowe had ND interest so took him at 38

The only way we could've had that #1 rookie pick is if we delisted another player last month. And let's be honest, Mackay was never being delisted :$

So....after our best draft hand since 1870, the key issue was picking Young Jimmy with our fifth and final draft pick 🤔

As a WWT supporter I have seen a bit of Rowey over the last two years and my impression was

1) Stephen shouldn’t waste money on a paternity test

2) Young Jimmy looks a bit chubby and may be too slow for an AFL player

However, anyone who watched the three SANFL finals live would understand why he was drafted. He knows how to kick goals. Many posters were desperate for us to take Logan McDonald because he was third in the WAFL goalkicking. Rowey as a small forward tied for the top goalkicker in the SANFL. He turned around the prelim final against the Panthers in a 10 minute burst.

The other advantage of having him on the main list is that he can replace Lachie Murphy and Bran Nue Mackae as the Bigfooty whipping boy if Lachie and David move on at the end of the season.

Not sure if this has been suggested but is it possible that Port and the Crows got together. I mean we traded picks. We didnt bid on their man and they didnt bid on our guys. Interesting!
It was obvious tonight that everyone had chatted and agreed not to bid, except Dodoro. did you see the Bulldogs guys pissing themselves when they made Dodoro use a list spot after Essendon had passed. That almost Made the night bareable.😂

Yeah because there has never been a rookie that has made it, stupid comment
They played the numbers. The numbers say there's more chance of Mackay playing 10 games in 2021 than a RD selection playing 10 games in their entire AFL career.

Are there exceptions, players who actually make it? Absolutely. However, they are a very small minority.

I love Rowe as a player, yappy little in your face, x factor personified. He'll be fine at AFL level but I'm not quite sure he'd worth 38.....rookie for mine.

Mindblown Maher didn't go....and Ford a helluva steal by roos.
so Maher didnt get picked?.. and we couldve had him as a rookie tomorrow..

but cant because its obviously more important to have mookay take that rookie spot and stay on our list one more year?..

how are there actually people in here that are fine with this?..

I might be carrying on a bit and I slightly apologise for that, but **** me, that is utterly dumbfounding that we cant take advantage of having pick 1 in the rookie draft and grab a maher or baldwin because 32year old mookay!.. i’m ****in ropable about it.

great night... bloody fantastic actually.. stoked with what weve picked up and stoked we add newie, borlase and hately tomoz.. but **** me, a maher or baldwin type as a rookie wouldve been a bloody steal.

So you’re not expecting any rookies to get picked up tomorrow?
I'm not expecting many of them to go on to have successful AFL careers. Historically, less than 1% of all rookie selections go on to play 100 AFL games.

Whilst not what I considered the Jones - McHenry top picks disaster by Hamish. i look at overall our picks as they don't seem to have the upside talent to in the to give us the X factor in the future .
In particular Berry and Rowe just don't ring top 25-35 players that some others still left might have been better to gamble on .
Again in Hamish we trust but both club and he are skating on thin ice.

10 games next year??... what the?..

if mookay plays 10 games of AFL next year theres something horribly wrong. the bloke shouldnt play one game next year... so why even have him still on the list?

Matt Balmer gives us an A in his Fox Footy draft report card

ADELAIDE CROWS

Picks (at the start of draft): 1, 9, 22, 23, 40, 80

Selections: Riley Thilthorpe (2), Luke Pedlar (11), Brayden Cook (25), Sam Berry (28), James Rowe (38)

The Crows made the Dogs pay the maximum by bidding on Jamarra Ugle-Hagan with the first overall pick. They then turned their attention to local tall Riley Thilthorpe, with the 201cm ruck-forward giving them a strong player for the future. Adelaide made another shock call by plucking South Australian Luke Pedlar with Pick 11, with the midfielder bolting up the order. He has plenty of power and can also push forward and hit the scoreboard. The Crows traded up to snare Cook, who bolted up the draft after a strong season. He kicked 26 goals in 13 matches playing as a tall and as a midfielder, with a high ceiling. He is a running machine and was the third South Australian picked by the club. With their other selection in the second round, they picked inside midfielder Sam Berry. He puts his head over the ball and wins heaps of clearances week in, week out. He also has elite endurance, averaging 17.7 disposals, 6.5 tackles and 4.4 clearances. The Crows ended their draft haul by taking small forward James Rowe, who fits a huge need at the club. He can walk in and play Round 1 next year. His fine SANFL season included 38 goals. Adding so many talented locals is a big win.

Grade: A

Just didn't want to do interviews. Basically told teams "you either wanna draft me or you don't but I'm not answering your stupid questions" and got scrubbed off lists because of it.
Wow. Never going to make it on a list with that attitude.

MacKay will show Newchurch what it take and will mentor and play an important role as a rookie players to turn Newchurch career into an elite pure outside midfielder after very questionable professionalism meant he wasn't pick up in the ND.

This year more than any really showed that the recruiters do drink their own bathwater. There were some astonishingly bad decisions made both on talent but more obviously on pick swaps. My goodness some of the trades were cringeworthy in how inept the simple maths appeared to be thrown out the window.

WTF are you on about?

Other clubs not drafting a player is proof they agree that they would list Mackay instead?

How?
It's proof that they didn't rate any of the remaining players as being worthy of a position on an AFL list.

Mackay is clearly worthy of a position on an AFL list, given that he finished top-10 in our 2020 Club Champion, and was top-5 on a votes per game basis.

The hatred of Mackay, and overrating of youngsters who the professional talent scouts clearly don't rate, is beyond ridiculous.

i hope mookay goes nowhere near any of our draftees thanks..

Sam BERRY
DRAFT ANALYSIS
A consistent midfielder with great contested ball-win- ning abilities, defensive pressure and endurance.
IMPROVEMENTS
› On-field speed
› Kicking composure

well someone obviously hasn’t watched him.
3.02 at the recent draft combine isn't slow and he was bloody good last year as an under-ager playing 3rd banana midfielder to Caleb Serong and Sam Flanders for Gippy Power and I have seen him play...quite similar in style to Caleb especially with similar excellent overhead ability and similar toughness.

He really does have good acceleration honestly.
I think you'll come around when you see him play.

Wow. Never going to make it on a list with that attitude.
Unless of course he happens to turn out to be an elite footballer, but, you know, don’t let talent become a deciding factor in recruitment. Why would we need to do 300 interviews and phsych profiles for if we recruited guys on their ability to play.

Look I actually quite like him, I just thought it was humorous that someone posted that his best 2 attributes were exactly what draft central said were his 2 most glaring weaknesses.

No, that's far far too simplistic. The difference between outside and inside is more than just a vulgar pace metric.
Cook is an outside leaning Half forward/wingman with supreme overhead marking so he's your outside player. Very new to top end footy so obviously they're looking at upside and future development.

Maybe Draft Central is incorrect and ESPN is correct.
