I’d be so embarrassed that I’d change teams because surely he can’t come back in here and post with any credibility at all
Drewie..i remember you asking what i had already won when you were checking what the bet was..gold that one. I had a chuckle then and i most certainly are habving one now. Lets see if FAITH holds to his side of the bet:cool:

I love Rowe as a player, yappy little in your face, x factor personified. He'll be fine at AFL level but I'm not quite sure he'd worth 38.....rookie for mine.

Mindblown Maher didn't go....and Ford a helluva steal by roos.
Stephen said the family believed from what they were told Carlton were picking him up in their next pick. So believe what you want if we truly did want him we had to get him in the national draft.

With the selection of RT, at least one (if not two) of Walker, Fog and Himmelberg have to sit out. Going forward, Will Fog and Himmelberg be fighting for the one position? Otherwise, oppo defences will be walking the ball out of our F50. We are very top heavy.

Just caught up with things.

Glad we passed on MacDonald. Watching his interview and seeing him tonight, does nothing for me.
He has a bit of a Figjam and Flight Risk feel to him

I reckon he will be back in WA within 4 years

Circumstance matters a bit with the trade of our 3rd round pick in 2021 to move up two picks.

We obviously didn't think Cook would be there (and needed to find a team who'd happily move down), and wouldn't have got past St.Kilda.

In that circumstance, giving up a third to slightly move up is fine.

The 34 for 38 + a 4th was weird, though it could have just been Port wanted to move down as they didn't think Jones was getting bid on early and we saw an chance to move up a few spots cheaply.

We needed 5 players in this draft, so we weren't in the running for Collingwoods 1st pick.
Yep. Pre draft if you said that to upgrade our pick 22 into a late 1st rounder woukd cost a future 3rd not too many would have baulked i think. Then upgrading a late 2nd to more of a mid 2nd costing a future 4th is also not out of the realms of fairness. Both trades were ok as we got the players we really wanted for the upgrades

Or RT sits out...

Walker is only here for 2021 and considering RT durability issues and likelihood that he's still growing into his body, it's probably worthwhile taking it slow this year.

If you want to play RT, then go top heavy (or remove Walker), but its probably not a concern this year. It's another year where the draft pick at the end is the most important part.

We’ve definitely got a stronger list heading into next year

Hately and Hinge added to our draftees and rookies too

I still think 2021 season will be a big struggle but after another strong draft end of next year we will have the basis of a good list

hope from there we can lure some SA talent back as FA and trades

when do we next play finals ? I’m going to say 2024

McAsey and RT as our key positioned players in the last two drafts. I reckon next year we will go for midfielders with x-factor
Was good to see McAsey getting involved and being interested enough in the future of the club that he wanted to be there front and centre with the club on draft night..

FWIW

I can certainly say I was way off in my own predictions, and my own analysis of Thilthorpe, it seems.

  • Apparently it was fairly split between Thilthorpe, MCDonald and DGB for our first pick.
  • A bit of gloss was taken off with us being unable to pick up Hollands, but you had the feeling that GC were quite interested in him so I doubt a deal could have been done.
  • Very interesting that North passed on McDonald. Might have been on the nose with a few recruiters.
  • Essendon have done quite well with their selections.
  • If we had traded with GWS for picks 15 & 18 for our 9 & 28, there's every likelihood we would have selected Pedlar and Cook with those picks anyway. Don't mind us picking up Pedlar at our 2nd pick at all. Just remember we had the option of taking Powell here, so we obviously see huge upside from Pedlar. According to Hamish they thought he would remain under the radar but it became evident multiple clubs were interested in him.
  • Slightly disappointed we didn't work our way further into the 2021 draft
  • Love the Cook selection
  • Berry looks like he was throwing people around like ragdolls. A Nicks type player, will be a contested/tackling machine.
  • Rowe looks to be a start-up R1 with the suspension of Stengle. Let's get an AFL preseason into him and see if he thrives.
  • Nice to see Crouch being part of the Thilthorpe induction. Don't think he's going anywhere next year. Also nice to see McAsey being involved Draft night.
  • Of all the teams Hollands could have gone to, GC is the one we wanted. They're reportedly already very close to a salary cap squeeze, and I don't see Hollands getting much game time next year. He has a mountain of players to try and squeeze in front of 2021/22. GC in a few years could certainly have a GWS feel about them, in terms of player retention. They'll have to fall in line eventually.

I am completely ambivalent about whether or not Mackay remains on our list in 2021. You wouldn't have heard any arguments from me if the club had decided to cut him loose when they did the same for Gooch, Dots & Crocker. However, arguing that we're better off making a speculative pick in the most speculative rookie draft in history (thanks to COVID shutting down U18 football in Victoria), is a completely irrational argument. There is no rational reason for thinking that this is a good idea - only irrational hatred of Mackay.

In any case, even if we did have an extra vacancy on the rookie list, I still wouldn't be advocating making a selection in the RD. There are better alternatives. The players in the RD are extremely speculative, this year even more so than usual, with 60% of the draft class having not played a single game all year. We would be much better off waiting until the pre-season supplementary period, when we get to have a look at them in our own club environment, allowing us to make a more informed assessment before making a decision. Even better would be waiting for the mid-season drafts, when we'll have some real playing form upon which to base our decisions.

We already have 1 list vacancy which can be filled during the pre-season supplementary period or mid-season draft, with Gibbs set to go on the inactive list after the final List Lodgement. History says we'll probably have another position available by the time the mid-season drafts roll around, courtesy of the inevitable long term injuries.

Note also that we've already taken 2x rookies this year - Borlase & Newchurch.

In combination, that's more than enough rookie options, without the need for making emotional & irrational decisions about Mackay.

MacKay will show Newchurch what it take and will mentor and play an important role as a rookie players to turn Newchurch career into an elite pure outside midfielder after very questionable professionalism meant he wasn't pick up in the ND.

We have some seriously good mentors in our team to bring this young squad along. I like the look of the new coaching staff and add to that guys like Tex, Sloane, Talia, Lynch. Some great players to mentor different types of players.

Mackay is an outstanding professional. It’s the reason why he is the whipping boy. Despite his limitations he has managed to play many more games than his talent/skills would normally allow. There is shit loads that our young players can learn from him and we actually don’t have many senior players that excel in what his key strengths are. He is courageous (yes he effin is), elite at implementing game plan/running patterns, and must be the consummate professional to last so many seasons.

I wouldn’t have given him a list spot and hope he doesn’t play a game in 2021. But I am glad he is around the place as a mentor for our young outside running players.

As much as I wish it was Walker, I fear it will be Himmelberg, which would be criminal given his breakout at the end of last year.

Thilthorpedo probably won't play every game next year, they will be over-cautious with managing his frame as he fills out.

The player who should be most concerned about their chances next year is Frampton, who I think was underused this year and showed glimpses of being able to attack and clunk the ball, and probably made it to more contests in one game than Walker did in 5.

Maybe, those draft picks last night plus getting Hateley in make me think we are preparing for him to possibly go

'Wanted' is not the word I would have used observing him, he gave off the distinct impression that he was 'scheduled' to attend.

Hopefully we can turn whatever pick Melbourne/Carlton/St. Kilda give us for him into a decent replacement via trade next year

while i agree, didnt pavlich get rejected by all 18 clubs as well the first time? you can miss out big time. its just hindsight is a wonderful thing.
Clubs were only allowed to draft 1x 17yo that year, and there weren't 18 clubs back then either. KMac may be derided for not being Pavlich, but he was still the 2nd or 3rd best of the 17yo kids drafted that year.

Any player not selected last night has been rejected 70+ times (59 selections, plus 11+ passes).

A few rookies will be taken, but most will be keeping room for supplemental selections and midseason draft
... and moving Gibbs to the inactive list means that we have a position free for using those mechanisms.

Its going to be an interesting midfield development, even without the strong 2021 midfield draft.

Crouch, Laird, Sloane as the experienced trio who you would think will demand a lot of midfield time. Then throw in young mids that need to play and development:

Hately, Jones, Schoenberg, Pedlar, Berry and O'Conner, need to play some footy. I don't buy Jones as an outside mid, look at footage pre draft and some of the rare good stuff he's done with us is winning the ball and breaking clear, he's an inside mid if he can win the ball more.

Good luck with that, has disappeared and probably won’t be back for a while.... pretty embarrassing
