Not really.

1) Borlase and Newchurch are Cat B so don’t count. If we want to keep Borlase then he takes a spot*

2) If we want to draft three payers then we delist/trade three of McPherson, McAdam, Brown, Doedee and Hately. To create three spots on the main list we move players from the main list to the rookie list.

3) We will probably get an extra spot due to changes to the veteran list.

I suspect that we will trade/delist three of the five players which allows us to draft three players and trade in one player.

*With all of our long term injuries (Doedee, Murray, Schoenberg and Butts) we will probably pick up Borlase and possibly some of the others as preseason replacements.

I expect that we will keep McAdam, Hately and possibly Brown.
 
Haven’t the contracted Nick Murray and Patrick Parnell now been on the Rookie List for 3 years and hence need to be upgraded or delisted? (Only 2.5 yrs in Parnell’s case from the mid-season draft, but not sure how that’s treated). Hence that’s likely 2 more main list spots needed.

Obviously Murray is a lock, but Parnell is a bit meh and could potentially be delisted and paid out or re-rookied if available. Ditto for the uncontracted Borlaise, as I think he’s only worth a Rookie Spot (A). De-list and re-rookie if available otherwise take someone like Tom Highmore for the back up role.

Not sure that Doedee is critical going forward, might be happy to see him walk. Also any of the contracted for 2024 Scholl, Hamill or McHenry should be offered as trade bait and potentially be delisted and paid out for 2024 if no takers. Not worth keeping list-cloggers if we have good 1st/2nd round picks that can be used for draft or trade.

McAsey and Seedsman are pretty much irrelevant since their places on the list were taken by Keane and Brown.

Nice work by the contract team. There's no-ne on that 2024 list that we have to worry about. There are a couple that are in obvious one year extension territory - Walker, Sloane and Smith, and Keays will probably deserve a longer offer. The rest are in the "Prove it or Move it" zone.

Definitely 2026. According to Schedule 5A, Section 3, of the 2023-27 AFL & AFLW Collective Bargaining Agreement:
3. First Year AFL Player Contracts
(a) National Draft Selection Meeting
If an AFL Player is drafted by a Club in the National Draft Selection Meeting, that AFL Player and Club will enter into an AFL Standard Playing Contract for the following minimum terms:
(i) Pick 1 to 20 at the National Draft Selection Meeting – three (3) year minimum term; or
(ii) Pick 21 or later at the National Draft Selection Meeting – two (2) year minimum term,
except where:
(iii) that AFL Player has previously been on an AFL Primary List or AFL Rookie List; or
(iv) that AFL Player is over 23 years of age by 31 December in the year in which the AFL Player is drafted by a Club.

Players drafted in the top-20 are automatically given minimum 3 year contracts. Curtin was pick #8. Edwards (pick #21) just misses out.

A quick glance at the overall numbers suggest we are no more exposed to list issues at the end of 2024 than most other clubs, also. Feeling pretty positive about list management for the next year or two given there's already been some signalling about players we're targeting (Petty for starters).
