Depends what his girlfriend is like that may be an explanation.

Yeah, he still tweets a lot about footy and his team mates. Considering they are all on break, I doubt they would be baiting each other much on Twitter, which is why hardly any of his recent tweets would be footy related. Hangs out with Tipp and Jacobs a fair bit, going by his past tweets.

Fair comment ST.

Not really.

He didn't know the guy who took a slash. He happened to be in a group who were socialising with the guy. He then did the smart thing and left the premises voluntarily.

He was on his Christmas break - the club has absolutely no right to say publically that he shouldn't be out that late.

I'd be petulant as well if I was in the news because I knew someone that knew someone who pee'd in a casino.

pix?

Also he's been with the club what, a month? He probably barely remembers all the names.

Poor judgement on his part I think. 6am at the casino? If it makes the media, it's an issue for the Club. If it hadn't, they wouldn't say anything. I guess that's the fine line they balance in the position they hold.

I'll re-iterate - he was on a sanctioned leave period.

As for Harper, these were his comments:

"He shouldn't be out that late, so we'll speak to Bernie about it when everyone gets back," Harper said.

"There isn't a (club-imposed) curfew, but it's a case of common sense prevails and don't be out too late when you're preparing for a football season - and 6am is too late."

Too late for who?

You said it yourself Phil - there's no club imposed curfew. Bernie was on leave. So, shut up.

My you woke up on the wrong side of the year.

Clearly, while no "curfew" is in place, the boys are asked to use their common sense. My guess is nothing would be said if it hadn't ended up in the media. Not Bernie's fault that some dick he was with was disgusting, but I think his judgement and decision making was irresponsible given he knows the kind of scrutiny they are placed under in a public place.

That's bullshit, you're only 26 once in your life, football is 2 months away from the pre-season.

Actually, we are in the pre-season now. They had a two week break but that aside, you are only an AFL player very, very rarely. I would think you forewent your right to behave like a normal 26 year old when you started playing professional football for a national team.

If people knew half the shit AFL players do :D

I've not got a big issue with this, so long as he's 100% for training and doesn't effect his body too much with a sugar overload, meh.

I'm just coming from the standpoint that he hasn't broken any rules. The club doesn't have a curfew, so being out late is moot. He hasn't done anything illegal. He hasn't caused a fuss at the venue (in fact he left the premises voluntarily even though he wasn't the culprit - he didn't have to do that).

If the club doesnt want players out til 6am, set an in-house holiday curfew.

Phearless Phil's comments are arbitrary and ridiculous. If 6am is too late to be out, is it too late to be shagging someone, or at a house party? Don't dress it up as being a training and body maintenance issue when it's clearly just about PR. It's a bad look to see Bernie out at 6am. That's the whole issue here, isn't it Phil?

Well, you've either broken team rules or you haven't.

As it stands, Vince has broken no team rules. So shut your pie hole.

It's more the associated problems that are caused with being on the town at 6am. There's a non-stop barrage of bad media and potential issues available at that time.

Sneaky - I'm with you on most of this. It's a PR exercise totally.

But - it's Bernie's choice if he wants to get caught up in PR exercises or not. The reality is that everyone in this city is waiting to make a PR exercise out of him. He has to live with that.

he rolled the dice - copped some collateral damage. Hopefully he can just shrug it off and not let it frustrate him.

As for Phil's comments - as you said its a PR exercise - but that's his job. Hopefully when he sits down with Bern they can agree Phil had to say something to placate the masses - it's actually a more positive message to say what he said tbh. It's not like Bernie hasn't been put under the pump in the past for missing curfew.. so good thing to point out there wasn't one for this incident so the public is clear he's done nothing wrong. You disagree?

The part I disagree with was the publically expressed value judgment from Phil that it's "too late" to be out at 6am.

So what isn't too late? 4am? 2am? Cmon Phil....any idea?

The club can't rely on the players to use common sense. Since when have footballers had plenty of that to spare? A guy who's out on the gas with no fear of breaking team rules is going to ride that puppy out to the end.

I don't want to hear Phil's value judgment on when he thinks it's too late to be out. What I want to hear is whether Bernie has broken team rules.

Clearly he hasn't.

Good post.

It was definately a disjointed statement from Harper - Im not sure he was clear what exactly his / the clubs position on it was. Whenever that's the case, they'd do well to just stfu.

Even though he was on leave, he still has to think a little bit about how his actions could reflect on the club, especially in this day and age where sponsors will split over the most trivial things. Though i don't see staying out til the early hours of the next morning at Christmas anything that needs to be dealt with. If anything, maybe just a quick "Dude, seriously," behind closed doors regarding being careful about who he hangs out with would've been plenty.
