Where and when: SCG, Friday May 24, 7.50pm AEST

Sydney Forecast
1.PNG

A POOR Air Quality Forecast alert is issued by the Office of Environment and Heritage due to smoke from in Sydney for Friday 24 May 2019

Last time they met: SCG, round 20, 2018: Sydney 11.7 (73) defeated Colingwood 10.11 (71)
Alex Johnson made an emotional return to senior footy to inspire his side to a thrilling win. Lance Franklin's six goals were the difference and he was awarded the three Brownlow medal votes, but young forward Tom McCartin was the hero. The Pies kicked three late goals to snatch the lead before McCartin booted a goal while lying on his back to give Sydney the victory.

What it means for Sydney: Two close wins over the past two weeks has given the young Swans confidence but they'll face a much sterner test from the Pies. It will show them exactly where they stand.

What it means for Collingwood: With the four teams just one game behind them on the ladder all facing tough challenges this weekend, a Pies win could give them a handy eight-point buffer in second spot in an incredibly even season.

How Sydney wins: The Swans can't match Collingwood's star-studded side for talent or experience, but they've shown over the past fortnight if they scrap and pressure the opposition, they can be more than competitive.

How Collingwood wins: The Pies midfield is full of stars and with a dominant ruckman in Brodie Grundy, it looks to have far more dangerous players than the Swans can cover. If Grundy gets on top of Callum Sinclair, he'll be a match-winner.

The stat: Collingwood faced a serious challenge from St Kilda last week but showed it was a class above the Saints in the final term. The Pies kicked 6.6 to one goal in the last quarter to show just how powerful they can be.

The match-up: Callum Sinclair v Brodie Grundy
The Swan hasn't been able to match his 2018 form this year but has improved his output in the past month, and he'll need to be at his very best to match Grundy around the ground and at stoppages. If the big Magpie imposes himself physically on the contest his fleet of gun onballers will destroy the home side.

It’s a big week for: George Hewett
The Swans midfielder won 20 contested possessions and nine clearances against North Melbourne last week and is more than just a stopper these days. Hewett will get another huge job on Friday night on Scott Pendlebury, Dayne Beams or Adam Treloar, or could even be thrown onto the wing to try to curb the influence of Steele Sidebottom.

Big call: Inspired by his brother Ben's return to senior footy with Collingwood, Swan Sam Reid will emerge from his form slump to boot six goals for the home side, while Ben will boot four.

Prediction: Collingwood by 28 points

The odds are biasing me to tip Collingwood, but I really think Sydney are a big chance to cause an upset here. I just feel Franklin might really pull one out here to put the Swans in the game. Still haven't changed my tip yet, but by game time I might have the courage. Everyone is high on Collingwood but this is a huge danger game.

Greasy, slippery slogfest with packed midfields and low scores. Collingwood to lead marginally all night and hold on for a 12 point win after being headed late in the last.

Collingwood 81
Sydney 69

I must be an idiot but I cant shake the feeling of an upset. Swans by 14 in a low scoring game. Franklin with 3 goals.

Pies at 1.50 is money for jam they pump the swans who have beaten 3 flaky as teams..

With no Moore I'm thinking Howe on Franklin.

Maynard to Heeney.

Allir to Reid.

Rampe to Mihocek.

Hewitt runs with Beams and Wills runs with Kennedy.

I haven't watched much of Sydney this year so I don't know why they're so down at the moment. On paper that looks like a pretty good side. There's some good match-ups for tonight, but I think Buddy will easily kick 3-4. Heeney should bag at-least 2. I'm thinking Allir Allir will dominate whoever he goes to out of Reid or Mihocek.

I'm picking Sydney by 2-3 goals in a pretty low scoring affair.

Ins/Outs for either team compared to Round 20, 2018:

Swans:

In - Mills, Melican, Thurlow, Blakey, Reid, Clarke, Fox, O'Riordan

Out - Smith, McVeigh, Johnson, Cunningham, Ronke, Jack, Robinson, Newman

Pies:

In - Roughead, Howe, Wells, Reid, Wills, Beams, Aish, Treloar

Out - Moore, Langdon, Varcoe, Cox, Sier, Adams, Murray, Daicos

Both sides have eight changes from the last time they played each other.

I find that I don’t enjoy footy at the SCG...not sure what it is

Every game played there is congested... because of the small ground. Which is probably also the reason Sydney was and is the pioneer premier 'ugly low scoring' football team of the past 15 years. Ross Lyon was obviously the bright spark that decided to use the small kids sized ground to an advantage.

Not sure on all the confidence on the Pies here. I can't see them winning by more than 10, and may even lose.

Collingwood have the superior midfield... but with Buddy back, Sydney have the more dominant Back and Forward lines today... with guys like Cox, De Goey, Elliot, Moore, etc out. I can't see it being a good night for the Pies. We'll win the ball in between the 50 arcs.. but we'll be exposed when inside either of the 50's.
