In a weekend of upsets I am just happy to come away with 4 points.

St Kilda pretty clearly went in with the intention of ruffling Geelong's feathers with some pretty unsociable football. When you do that, you're going to lose the free kick count more often than not, but it's also not a bad tactic to get a more highly rated opponent to take its collective eyes off the ball and direct its focus on square ups.

The disappointing thing for a Geelong supporter is how well it worked for a half. And if Hawthorn doesn't try a similar tactic again next week, I'll be staggered. That's probably a knock on the current Geelong side: they're not soft, but a lot of players seem to be above the niggle that's allowed to go on and sometimes they can respond the wrong way. Kelly, Duncan, Blicavs, Taylor, Stanley...you rarely see them getting involved in a push and shove. Post Scarlett's retirement, Lonergan and Taylor must have just about been the 'nicest' quality key defence pair in the league, though only an imbecile would consider them (particularly Lonergan) soft.

Then you've got 'nice guys' like Hawkins and Ablett who are prone to doing something undisciplined and even risk a suspension when an opponent starts getting into them. Bews is a welcome addition in this regard and it's why players like Atkins and Rohan may need to be persisted with despite being down on form: because they're up for getting a bit of dirt under the fingernails.

You won't win games of football playing the man instead of the ball, but you'll make it a tight ugly contest. If the saints want to go anywhere quickly, they need to play smarter and harder at the ball. Once they turned the ball over they didn't look like getting their hands anywhere near it.

This style of football appears to be the closest way of beating the cats. By seasons end once we've played Hawks and Freo who will play similar styles, we'll see whether we fair a bit better at countering it.

Well that's certainly a compelling argument.

The public perception of Hawkins is that he's a big teddy bear and the perception of Ablett - until a few WTF brain snaps this year (which only adds weight to this point) - was that he'd played 300+ games, probably been heavily tagged in half of them and still had a spotless record in terms of suspensions.

Well with a few players back we were more competitive (Only missing Steven, Hanna, Geary, Webster, Battle....and we wont mention the others)

Good to see young players like Marshall, Clark and Coffield going well.

Midfield class remain our biggest problem. Steele showed again why he is such a good player though.

Nothing more cringe-inducing than coaches blaming umpires for a loss. I'd be livid if I were a Saints supporter and that was the only answer the coach could give.

Geelong lost the free kick count against the Dogs last week 28-13, yet I wasn't reading articles on the AFL website about it.

I think we are sitting bottom 3 in that measure with a lazy -34.

Collingwood are an astounding +78 for the year.

Ok had time to digest this game. St Kilda were ok. Geelong are on top by default.Chris Scott mantra is play the flanks and wings for 95 % of the game. Show some testicular fortitude and play through the middle when it is on
