Where and when: MCG, Wednesday April 24, 7.35pm

Melbourne Forecast
1.PNG

Mostly cloudy. Medium (60%) chance of showers during the morning and afternoon, but dry this evening. Light winds becoming southwesterly 15 to 20 km/h in the afternoon then becoming light in the evening.

Last time they met: MCG, round five, 2018: Melbourne 8.8 (56) lost to Richmond 15.12 (102)
The final margin hides the fact this was a hotly contested, physical game. Richmond, boosted by an even contribution across the park, wore down the Demons to blow out the difference from 19 points at three-quarter time to 46 by the final siren.

What it means for Richmond: The continued righting of the ship. After a disastrous opening few rounds with two 40-plus-point losses and injury to star players, the Tigers sit at 3-2 coming into this match.

What it means for Melbourne: Salvaging of pride. Last weekend was a horror show for Melbourne, comprehensively outplayed by an improving St Kilda. In an even season, every win counts, but one over Richmond would be a confidence boost.

How Richmond wins: Speed. Fortunately for the Tigers, they have it in spades. Melbourne were slow and beaten on the outside last week and Richmond is in a good position to exploit it again.

How Melbourne wins: Clearances have been Richmond's Achilles heel the past few years, and Melbourne has some of the stronger inside midfielders in the competition. Using Max Gawn's ruck work to advantage is vital.

The stat: Richmond superstar Dustin Martin regained some form last week against Sydney but playing Melbourne has often been an issue for the midfielder. Martin averages 22 disposals against the Dees, which most players would be pleased with, but it's his second-lowest return.

The match-up: Tom Lynch v Sam Frost
With Oscar McDonald out of favour, Melbourne's one recognised key back is Frost (229th overall in the Official AFL Player Ratings). He will be up against Tom Lynch (207th), who was goalless last week, but kicked 16 in the first four rounds.

It's a big week for: Tom McDonald
It's been a horrible start for the Melbourne key forward. He hasn't been helped by poor delivery inside 50, but McDonald has only kicked two goals this year. Was moved onto the wing against St Kilda in a bid to get him involved.

Melbourne desperately needs Tom McDonald to start kicking goals. Picture: AFL Photos

Big call: Jack Riewoldt will return with a bang after missing three games with a wrist injury and kick four goals.

Prediction: Tigers by 27 points

This has bloodbath written all over it. One side plays the MCG well, the other is Melbourne. The Dees lack of confidence compounds a lack of skill and leg speed. I expected it to be hot in the contest early but the Demons will fade as Richmond transition the ball from defence to attack at warp speed. Riewoldt always kills us and the above suggests that Dusty will get 30+ and/or kick 6+ goals because ‘he’s usually quiet against Melbourne.’

Dees with 5 changes adds a bit of the unknown. It might make them even more disjointed. It might give them the energy boost that gets their season started. Their team isn’t that much different to the team that made a prelim last year and that means we must consider them dangerous.

I still back us to cover them but if we’re 5% off and they’re switched on, it won’t end well.

Generally when a side makes 5 changes you dont want to pick them, forced or unforced. The Demons defence has been a problem and losing Jetta definitely wont help. They seem to get defence is an issue with a couple if high profile recruits there the last couple of years
Unfortunately neither are on the park this year.

The Tigers will do what they do, and play at the level they can with all over the ground pressure. Dusty's form did actually improve last week, when it wasnt looking good.

Riewoldt back is huge. Not just because he's a starplayer but because he's a quality character. I question if we'd have seen the petulant nonsense from Dusty if Riewold had been out there at Spotless.

Houli back is significant as well and I thought he lo9ked in goid form against the Swans.

I query if the Tigers best is going to be good enough this year, but should be today.

It never matters where these two teams are on the ladder. It’s always tight. Tonight will be no exception. Don’t care about the margin, we just need the win to get us to 5-2. We have dogs, Hawks and Bombers after that. Good luck Dees. Go Tiges. About to hit the road.

Melbourne is one of those teams, against which we have generally under-performed compared to our relative positions in the league. The key in most of these match ups is our weakest line - our midfield, particularly against teams like Melbourne and North that have strong rucks and a host of big-bodied inside mids. With Cotchin out and Dusty proving vulnerable to a tag (yes he did well against the Swans but more by going forward and kicking goals than by being a monster in the middle) we are reliant on Prestia and a bloke playing his 3rd game in Ross along with Nank who loses hitouts but often wins the subsequent clearance. We don't have to win the midfield battle to win the match, but we need to be competitive there. If Melbourne smash us in the clearances we will struggle. The other major concern, as evidenced in the second half of the Swans game, has been occasional problems converting our forward entries into scores. Hopefully the inclusion of our forward line general in Riewoldt will help that.

We've been a touch easy to score against but if Reiwoldt is underdone and Tom Lynch carries his form from last week into today they will struggle.

On the other hand, Tommy Mac being long overdue for a big game and the return of the great Jeffy Garlett makes us a 6 to 8 goal better side. And Rance won't be there to do anything about it.

Dees by ****in' plenty, gonna be a slaughter at the G tonight. Can't wait!

Good observation wrt Jack. Such an elite player and now a mature and positive influence on the team. His footy IQ is very high.

I have copped a bit of flack for criticising the tiges recent winning form. Its good to see them get some g and d back, but the skill factor is underwhelming and will continue to get cut apart by the better teams if they continue to butcher the ball. The forward thrusts smack of hopefullness when precision is required. If Deez get on a roll they can beat up the tiges espesh as a onballers lack the in and under types. We miss the skipper big time.

The 5 changes don't concern me, both sides are coming off a 4 day break and I'm actually surprised Richmond only made 1.

The changes themselves I generally like as well, as they give us a bit more run to hopefully defend on the outside a little better.

But even with that, I can't see us getting within 5 goals.

Just on garlett correct me if I'm wrong. but didn't you guys struggle for goals last year than paul roos wanted Jeff and Peterson in and your form lifted?
People laugh but having Jeff sitting off the pack might be what you guys need. Only takes 2 quick goals early from him and you guys are in the game...

Tigers midfield is not a massive ball winning group if you get on top

It's going to be very interesting, both teams will want to win (well derrrr I hear you say :p) - who will be more impacted by the short turn around from last weekend ?

I think Richmond should win
But I'd also like to see Melbourne give Richmond an atomic wedgie and win by 10 goals!

Hard game to tip to be honest

Season over for the demons if they lose here. Although, it's actually not. That 8th spot or even 7th could still be just two games off for the Dees after round 6 concludes. It could also go the other way with the sides they need to lose to keep them from going 3 games clear if they triumph.

Dees could be playing shit footy a quarter of the way in and be within touching distance. Win and they're only a game outside of the 8. That's the intriguing part about tonight. and yet another good story to come out of it whoever salutes. If Richmond get up they're rolling after making it three straight.

The Dees would want to get a hurry on though.

Hawks
Suns away
WCE away
Giants home
Adelaide home

Some difficult games. Then again, which game isn't difficult these days. And every side has shown they're beatable even at home like the Eagles, Giants and Cats.

People keep talking about our "lack or leg speed", that's not a massive issue.

The issue is our defenders are so f***ing stupid that they get sucked up the field and let every one of their opponents get goal side and lose them instantly when the ball gets turned over.

That results in the opponent waltzing into an open goal and our defenders running like chickens with their heads cut off.

Thank f*** the Wagner campaigners and Spargo got dropped.

Also not understanding the whole only having Frost as a key defender when you've got Lynch and Riewoldt to match up on thing.

If we fix the defensive structure then things will turn around quickly but I haven't got any faith that will happen until May and Lever are both on the field.
