Richmond didn't get rid of/let go of butler. They looked after a fringe player and got him to the club he wanted to go for cheap and on top of that waited till we'd done all 50 of the other trades we pulled off last year and accepted the scraps.

It's what good clubs do. I'm sure we'll be happy to return the favour in a couple years after a couple flags :D
Exactly, you either trade like a good professional club with your players welfare at heart or you trade like Essendon and Carlton. What goes around comes around.
Good luck to Butts, great to see him doing so well.

Congrats to both teams, how refreshing to watch a great game of footy where taking the game on when you have space and not turning backwards and boundary side all game. This is what footy should be like, such a contrast to the borefest that was the Swans Pies games.

Also couldn't be happier for Butts, the last 2 years at Tiges he never looked like he wanted to do the hard running, but watched him closely last night and boy his work rate was fantastic, has obviously helped his confidence and as such his skills are showing. Good on him hope he keeps smashing it!!!

Plugger35 get in here and defend the umpiring. How Ryder and Clarke got away with them blatant free kicks is amazing

Match fixing

Clark got a handball.

Ryder should have been paid a free against Witts for being blocked out of the contest. Was entirely realistic for Ryder to use his leap rather than engage in a wrestle. He never took his eyes off the ball and nearly got a hand on it if not for Witts stopping and putting his arms out to try and block.

What are your thoughts on the Ben King 'blocking' free kick paid against Howard?

What on earth are you on about? He jumped all over Witts all game.. all this hype around Ryder- did not live up to it at all last night..

very annoyed with those non calls late in the game especially that Ryder call on Witts And the Clarke HTB

Gold Coast got a ridiculous free and Ben King goaled putting GC in front. Baffling call.

That king was an interesting free. I think it was there, he didn't attempt to go for the ball

Either way, can't blame umpires for the result of the game. Every playing decision changes the outcome of the game.

Anyway, well played Saints. Game of the year so far

You can't push someone out of the contest without any intent for going for the ball... that is why the call was made

Can you let Sam Collins know this? Max King could have kicked half a dozen last night if that is the standard for a free kick.

If we want to quibble with the umpiring -

One minute into the last qtr Witts receives a handball, has prior opportunity, is tackled to the ground and then disposed of it illegally. Ball up called 15m out dead in front. Certain StKilda goal denied.

Minutes later Gresham holds his ground by putting his arms in the back of Harbrow, who is backing into him, paid for a push. Again, another certain goal denied.

We did, but have no idea why. Everyone could see Ratts was a good coach. He just needed some fine tuning which he has now got at Hawthorn.
We did at the time because people believed Carlton was in the premiership window having just missed out on a prelim in 2011 and with a slew of no. 1 draft picks etc.
Therefore when Carlton underperformed in 2012 (though in hindsight perhaps the hype of the first 3 games got ppl carried away- besides they had a shocking injury list) and Malthouse was available, there was this undercurrent of pressure to sign him as if it was going to be a one off chance to get a proven premiership coach.
Ratten who clearly was a very methodical and tactically nous coach who always put up a fight was clearly just a victim of circumstances.

Did you actually read any of them, 9 out of 10 either wishing him well or wishing he'd shown the same hunger with us the previous 2 years
Yeah, I saw lots of them "wishing he'd shown the same hunger with Richmond" plus a number of "f.... you" posts

St Kilda made out like bandits. It's not often you hit the jackpot with an All Australian selection 12 months after getting someone with a 4th round draft pick

The Ben King one was very obviously there. I would have disagreed with it if Howard actually got anywhere near the ball but he stopped King from being able to get to the ball, and didn't touch, or even attempt to touch it himself - didn't get within a metre of it. If that wasn't a blocking free, then nothing is.

King just collapsed with the body contact Howard had full expectation that KING would hold position then Howard would take a simple chest mark. Poor umpires call.

It doesn’t matter, (Although I disagree he collapsed, Howard was just stronger and had more momentum) it was too far away from the ball drop to be considered part of the contest. It was a block

Watching it back and Howard makes contact with King almost exactly where the ball drops.

King buckles under the contact, moving the contest away from the drop zone, then grabs Howard's arm (presumably to steady himself) preventing Howard from making any play on the ball. Howard throws his arm out late trying but realizes he has missed it and moves on to receive from Long who will clean up.

The non controlling umpire then blew a late whistle to pay the free. Very soft but to the letter of the law it's probably there.

Brayden Maynard wishes this umpire was working the 2018 Grand Final...

Getting Butler for a bargain 4th round pick has helped to make up for us overpaying for Hill, Butler has become the matchwinner we expected Hill to be.
Hill is an excellent "icing on the cake" type of midfielder.

I think St Kilda was crazy to acquiesce to his huge salary demands, but he may yet prove the difference between winning & losing a big match in September. When his confidence is up, nobody can tackle him. Hits his targets with unerring frequency too. Not scything 'Hollywood' passes like Dusty. But he always gets around the tackler & runs his full 15m and spots up the leading player 35m away.

It's an interesting position the Saints find themselves in... 2nd on the ladder with minimal input from their two big money signings, Hill and Hannebery. It makes you wonder about the possibilities if they can get those two fit and firing.

You know if we didn’t win the flag last year without him we might have cause to complain however we did win the flag without him and he won’t be the reason if we don’t win it this year. At the end of the day he couldn’t cement his place in the side and wanted a trade and when we trade we don’t try and bend over the other club like a Essendon and Carlton do.
Good luck to Butts this year and for the rest of his career, he’ll always be one of the 22 drought breakers.

I think the plan was originally meant to be more from 2021 on after landing another inside mid and with Max then being a bit stronger and Marshall tapwork having been improved by training with Ryder....

Trouble is that Ratts is turning things around quicker than anyone anticipated.

The money is not really an issue as the club has been on the minimum allowed for some time, and the "banked" amount is there to be used. It also means that we have to spend some $$$ regardless. Hill's trade cost was high. Hanna's was actually a cheap trade, though again his wage is high. But landing Hannas then allowed the acquisition of other players. Though main question is him staying on the park! But if not it was only a waste of a pick 39-ish.

PS: The Swans traded Hannebery and pick 28 to the Saints, and received pick 39 and St Kilda's 2019 second-round pick in return. So effectively Hannerbery was traded for pick 39 ( or slightly more as the 2019 second rounder was pick 25 before father sons etc).
