Well if Geelong win tomorrow I think that means we finish 5th, and if we didn't botch so many shots tonight and be robbed of a goal we did look to kick, we could have been top four this year- and that's despite the fact we were missing 3 of our most important players (Ryder, Gresham and Carlisle), plus another best 22 in Long, while Richmond were at full strength (?).

So it's not like we were miles off it.
well the saints rebuild took 1-2 seasons more longer than originally planned.

Saying that, saints are primed for a good run of finals. They are capable of play finals for 3-6 years in a row depending form, the coach, the (age of the) players and Medical staff.

Saints are now a mid table side and like 6-8 other teams I can think of, will finish between 5th-12th next season.

This is a confounding comment. Brad Hill wasn't recruited for his body on body talents... he is an outside runner who has a laser-accurate kick, he provides that in spades. I thought he has been fairly decent for the Saints.
He was top 3 in the B&F in each of his 3 seasons at Freo and won 1 of them. Doubt he finishes top 12 for us.

Despite his Brownlow he is not among the modern greats, or even the next rung down. But he has developed into an imposing leader after the captaincy almost crushed him. Took on the job when Richmond had played finals twice in 29 years and has since led us to 7 of 9 finals series. The right man at the right time.

Was disappointed that he wasn't recognised for breaking Perce Bentley's club games record tonight, set in 1940. A far cry from the fanfare Pendlebury received recently when breaking Buckley's club record.

Gale gave a 'private' talk to the playing group before the match on that topic. (Hardwick mentioned it in a presser)

Only 2 of these players are premiership captains

Well it's 3 totally different situations.

At the hawks, he was a younger player. He won a 3 peat of flags in 2013-5 as we was working with guys like Hodge, Mitchell, Lewis, breust and other experienced mids. In short description, he wasn't the main mid to build around as he was a gut running outside winger.

At Freo, he entered a team that went 0-10 and crippled with injury in 2016. So he was a young and experienced 24 year old to help freo in a rebuild. Yes he won Freos best and fairest in 2017. No shame in that as Freo needed all the midfield help we can get.

In that 2017-19 period at Freo, he stood out in some Freo wins in that period. Hence each season he was in the top 3 of Freos best and fairest too. Not surprisingly he was motivated to play alongside his brother Stephen as well.

At the saints, the saints needed another outside mid with packle besides jack billings.

Saints have spent 8 seasons without finals and needed guys like Brad Hill that has got finals experience.

Saints payed overs for Hill but will get 5-6 years of good footy under him.

Ryder especially and the rest of their talls killed us in the air. Ryder was sorely missed - 52 to 9 scores from stoppages foe the Tigers
Yeah Ryder out was massive, for multiple reasons.

Going into the game they said we were 2nd for either scores from stoppages, or scores from centre bounces, while Richmond were one of the worst in the comp at it, yet as you said, with him gone we lose scores from stoppages an extraordinary 52 to 9!

He gives our midfield an armchair ride in there and The result of him missing was there for all to see.

Then there's the fact it also robbed our forwardline of Marshall, who gives us another big target up there and makes it harder for teams to double-team King.

Having to have Jono Marsh do the backup rucking instead of Marshall was also disastrous.

Having that Ryder-Marshall ruck/forward combo was arguably our main point-of-difference as a team, and of course Ryder was BOG last week.

The good news for Richmond is that Lynch should only get a week and not miss the gF if they make it.

The bad news is that when he doesn't get a week, we'll be buried under piles of salt.

Again.

It is no lazy certainty that Saints will progress on a similar gradient next year. In fact it is likely probablistically (try saying that with a breast in your mouth) they won't. It is the funeral sentiment, humans care for people undergoing a loss, and lie to them to make them feel better.

Also, what chance the Tiges Port game replicates the previous one? Noteworthy is RFC's post 2016 ability to go to school after poor games and work out teams that previously had the wood on them or thrashed them. They are the learning club. They may be in class right now and you can bet they won't be sitting there popping white heads and smearing the pus under the desk top where the old chewy is.

Does anyone have a suspicion the GF could be between the two most abhored teams in Melbourne, a people who know a thing or two about being abhorent and sneaking outside their radius?

As soon as Martin goes it is over.

Enjoy it while it lasts.
Martin has another 5 years in him , He is extremely durable and doesnt rely on speed as much as other players

I see him at the age of 33-34 still playing as a foward with some midfield time but mainly foward kicking 40+ goals a year
in 11 years he has played 243 games

Who knows what happens in the next 4-5 years as all of Cotchin,Houli,Astbury,Riewoldt,Edwards etc will be gone and with Free agency you can always convince a gun to come via free agency

But who knows what happens look at the Cats they have a list full of 30+ year olds and keeping topping up and staying at the pointy end of the ladder
Hawks also did this for a few years

The Port game earlier in the year was an interesting game for a few reasons
* Our 1st game in adelaide for the year with a predominantly 1 sided crown , We have now played there 2 times and the last being just 2 weeks ago
* Scores were level or just a few points difference at 3/4 time and lost it in the last quarter with some bad errors like the 100mtr penalty etc
*Astbury , Cotchin , Houli , Edwards , Nankervis , Graham , Prestia all didnt play in that game who are all starting 22

Whilst Port are fancied to win you never know with a team like Richmond with 4 years deep finals experience
