James Blanck debut
Hawthorn will blood its fifth debutant for season 2022, with mid-season draftee James Blanck picked to play his first game.
Blanck joined the club just three weeks ago, after the Hawks nabbed the 21-year-old with Pick 20 in the mid-season rookie draft. The big-bodied defender spent the last three seasons at Box Hill, including last year under now-Hawthorn coach Sam Mitchell. Standing at 195cm tall, Blanck’s quality has shone through in recent outings at VFL level, with his impressive athleticism and dour defending. Blanck becomes the second Box Hill product to make his debut for Hawthorn in as many seasons, after Jai Newcombe made the jump from the same path 12 months ago.

Black arm bands
Hawthorn will wear black arm bands tonight to honour the legacy of former premiership player Bernie Jones, who sadly passed away this week. Jones played 65 games in the brown and gold between 1973 and 1977, which included the 1976 premiership. After spending a year at a rival club, Jones returned to the Hawks to finish his career, chalking up a further eight games.

Hawthorn will be the low ranking side nobody in the hunt for finals wants to face in the run home. They're well coached, talented and know how to knock off the top sides. Huge danger game for the Dogs and it doesn't get easier for them next week facing a humiliated Brisbane at the Gabba off a 6 day break. Dogs need to win this and hold percentage next week to keep them amongst the finals chances on the run home. But, like Hawthorn, nobody will enjoy coming up against them in their run home regardless of whether or not they're in the finals chances due to the fact that this team is proven to be able to make a Grand Final.

Hawthorn are just playing for fun at the moment, very dangerous. Interesting time for their supporters as there's no finals pressure and nothing but upside for their rebuilding squad. They have the chance to ruin the finals hopes of Footscray (2 games), Richmond and St. Kilda in the run home with the only possible potential for embarrassment coming against North and West Coast in their run home. Even then they could finish on 10 wins which would be a really good achievement at their stage of rebuild.

Fascinating game, am glad to be going to it.
