The vast majority of Victorian players that represent Vic Country and Vic Metro come from one of the schools in the (APS) Associated Public Schools of Victoria or (AGSV) Associated Grammar Schools of Victoria.

APS Schools: Brighton Grammar, Carey Baptist Grammar, Caulfield Grammar, Geelong College, Geelong Grammar, Haileybury, Melbourne Grammar, St Kevin's College, Scotch College, Wesley College and Xavier College.

AGSV Schools: Assumption College, Camberwell Grammar, Ivanhoe Grammar, Marcellin College, Mentone Grammar, Peninsular Grammar, Penleigh and Essendon Grammar, Trinity Grammar and Yarra Valley Grammar

Even the "public" schools are for all intents private schools, easy to get a scholarship if you are good at footy.
"Public" in this context is the English use. They are private schools, usually early established ones.
The commentators mention them because that's where they send their kids ( what else can you do when you are seriously overpaid?), and because they offer scholarships to good state school kids for the last 2 years. They never mention which school Patrick Dangerfield, Lewis Jetta , Michale Walters, Wil Powell, Cameron Guelfi ..... In WA, a lot of parents send their kids to PSA schools because they have a higher chance of being seen, and representative selection is soooo corrupt-they often don't select more talented state school kids. (e.g. wil Powell).

Yeah, not a surprise.

Dogs should be playing better than this- what’s going on down there?
We certainly should be playing better than this. Many of us had very high hopes after last years granny, slightly softened off-season when we again failed to recruit a KPD. Whats happening?
  • Injuries to key players
  • Unintelligible team selection
  • Playing marginal players out of position which highlights their flaws
  • Incredibly leaky defense
  • Too much reliance on one player up forward
  • No communication up forward (constantly spoiling each other)
  • Midfield not all performing as they should
  • Bailey shooting his season in the foot when he was on a blinder
Bailey Bruce and Toby coming back helps and unbelievably were still a shot at the 8! If we beat either you guys or Melb and every other result goes as it theoretically should we would make 8th! Hopefully Caleb back soonish too.

And anything can happen if Bevo's boys make it there ;)

Thanks for thoughtful response - explains a few things then. Team selection/out of position a mystery then? Hope dogs do get sorted and get cracking again-great to watch when they re up and about.

We assume the match committee have reasons but many decisions appear mysterious to the fans. Player selections dont always appear to be on on-ground form. Clearly there are things we dont see going on around the club and maybe the selected 22 are standouts on the training pitch week in week out. Who knows, definitely not the fans. Maybe its just indicative of a team with a deep injury list and not enough cattle to keep topping up with quality. Like most clubs our top 15 (?) are great, tier 2 and 3 players are a raffle at times. Re positioning of players, well blokes who are performing at half forward, small forward, mid in the VFL are selected to play half back etc in the AFL, or blokes who are performing well in 1 position at AFL level are moved around the next week "to create flexibility" again its a consistent pattern, mystifies the fans. ie Treloar on a half back flank against the swans. Probably to plug the hole left there by Calebs injury but he didnt perform well there.
