The mental health card is something that we discuss regularly in our lunchroom in mental health services. The reality is the public have not been educated about the differences between mental health distress and mental illness.

Much of what footballers call ‘mental health’ is mental health distress. Reactive, brief, emotional difficulties. Mental illness is a much more severe form of ‘mental health’.

It’s important we understand the difference, all people experience mental health distress numerous times throughout their lives.

However moderate- severe mental illness is a completely different kettle of fish and shouldn’t be thrown in the same category.
Question - Can ongoing mental health distress lead to mental illness?

Comment - for those who don't have a problem with the constant haranguing of a 19 year old kid trying to do the best he can playing a sport he's good at, and booing him when he is sitting on the bench injured, you are very ordinary human beings.

The irony is that he's probably achieved more in his life by being an AFL listed player and playing in front of 10's of thousands of people each week than 90% of the imbeciles who think they're achieving something by booing him on the field and bagging him on social media.

Pies fans are now concerned about mental health and the impact booing has on a player's mental health.
It's only 8 years too late, but at least you got there. :thumbsu:

Don't tar me with that brush, I have never boo'd a sportsperson, and thought the treatment of Goodes was disgraceful.

Nice Whataboutism though.

Answer - Sure. However, in order to remove oneself from this dreadfully useless Drama/ Victim triangle (Persecutor, Rescuer, Victim) all parties need to take self responsibility and problem solve. People booing need to stop and realise this is unhelpful. Pies supporters rescuing him need to believe in his resilience and encourage him to take self responsibility. And Ginni needs to take responsibility for how he chooses to play the game, recognise he chooses to play in a manner that brings his reputation into disrepute and choose to either accept that it will bring a shadow over his reputation/career ....or.... he can change.

Problem solving is required.

This triangle can be applied to pretty much every toxic situation in life and until all parties restrain themselves from entering one of the roles......all parties are equally responsible for its perpetuity.

Kidding, right?
Goodes was booed because he was a dirty player who got the Luke Hodge "Good Bloke" treatment by the media.

Publicly outing that girl at that Pies game was a bit of a s**tc**nt move as well. I'm sure she was popular at school for a while after the ACA crew showed up at her door.
Thanks for putting everyone straight. Amazing how you can speak with such authority as to the true motivations of tens of thousands of people but, there yuh go, we bow to your extraordinary mindreading powers.

Now, just a formality to check you're legit, if you can just tell us who won the 2022 AFL grand final.

He wasn't getting booed for being injured, he was getting booed for being a diving campaigner....that absolves us of all blame.
That's a ridiculous distinction, he's a teenager who was injured and subbed out and you all still booed him, pathetic grubby behaviour and by your logic that reflects on every Swans supporter whether they were there or not

The Collingwood fan base are the last people who should be seating themselves in an ivory tower.....your club's fans have a long list of s**t behaviour that we have a long way to go before we catch you.

Collingwood supporters treatment of Milne and then Riewoldt were a disgrace. They can never take a shot at any club.
Milne was one of my faves, great player, extremely clever

Well if people are comfortable booing injured teenagers then whatevs, enjoy

Pies supporter logic....How can you say that about 12 year girl Swans supporters, that's outrageous, you're not allowed to call out the poor behaviour of 12 year old girls, it's written in the rules of racist campaigner-ing.

No it's actually your logic to include the 12yo girls, remember? Tarred with the same brush?

Anyway this is getting really boring, I'm proud to be one of the thousands of Magpie fans who gave young Paul Salmon a solemn standing ovation as he got carried off on a stretcher at Vic Park in 1984, that's what we're really about

Collingwood fans are about giving a standing ovation to Essendon players.
Who knew. You learn something everyday.

Not to mention Ginni seems like a genuinely good bloke off the footy field, I may regret this if he plays on Sunday and kicks 5 but he's a hell of a young talent and doesn't deserve the booing just because he's a little flamboyant.

People do realise that raising an arm in a tackle is the best way to shrug a tackle right? If the tackler goes high in the process that's their fault. You can tackle at the waist, and yes it leaves them with an option to handpass but it minimises your chance of giving away a 'soft' free.
