Bomber Milestones:

Alwyn Davey Jnr Round One Debut

Alwyn Davey Jnr, son of former Bomber Alwyn Davey, will make his debut against Hawthorn today. The Bombers selected Davey Jnr in last year’s draft, using their father-son rights to secure the forward with pick No.45. Davey Jnr was told of his debut by twin brother Jayden on Wednesday, who was also selected by the Bombers in the 2022 Draft with pick No. 54. Both Davey brothers are products of Essendon’s James Hird Academy, where potential father-son selections have the opportunity to train with the club throughout their junior years.

Dylan Shiel – 200 AFL Games

Dylan Shiel plays his 200th AFL game today against Hawthorn. Shiel played his junior footy with Caulfield Grammar School and at TAC cup level for the Dandenong Stingrays, catching the attention of recruiters and was pre-selected for the inaugural GWS team in 2011. Shiel quickly developed into being one of the best midfielders in the competition, earning All-Australian honours in 2017. After seven years at the Giants, Shiel sought a move back to Melbourne and was traded to Essendon in 2019. Shiel has played 135 games with the Giants and 64 with the Bombers.

Hawks Events and Milestones:

The youthful Hawks

The Hawks starting 22 today has an average age of 24.5 years and an average games played tally of 68.3. The team includes 15 players aged 25 or under and 13 players of 50 games or less experience.

Box Hill-Hawthorn connection

Today’s game will feature five Hawks players who were recruited from Box Hill, the club’s VFL affiliate. Lachlan Bramble, Ned Reeves, Fergus Greene, Jai Newcombe and James Blanck were all at Box Hill prior to joining Hawthorn.

Cam Mackenzie debut

Selected by the Hawks with Pick 7 in the 2022 national draft, Cam Mackenzie has been one of the club’s most impressive youngsters this pre-season.

The 19-year-old midfielder demanded senior selection in the season opener after an outstanding performance against Collingwood in a practice match a fortnight ago which saw him record 24 disposals, a goal and a game-high 11 scoring involvements.

The 188cm Sandringham Dragons junior will be the first Hawk to make his debut in 2023, after the brown and gold blooded a league-leading 16 debutants across the two seasons prior.

Trio of club debutants

Hawthorn will unleash its trio of talented recruits, with Karl Amon, Fergus Greene and Lloyd Meek to make their club debuts this afternoon.

Amon committed to the Hawks as an unrestricted free agent last September after nine seasons at Port Adelaide, choosing to join the brown and gold upon a return to his home state of Victoria.

25-year-old Greene inked a deal with the Hawks as a delisted free agent in November, coincidently turning his back on a job selling pens for a second chance at the top level.

Meek landed at Hawthorn in October after the Hawks struck a deal to secure the ruckman’s services following wide-spread interest across the league.

1983 Premiership Reunion

Hawthorn’s 1983 premiership heroes will be celebrated with a lap of honour at half time today, as the club looks back on its famous grand final win against Essendon 40 years ago.

The 1983 premiership over the Bombers marked Hawthorn’s fifth grand final victory and the birth of the fierce rivalry between the two sides.

Manchester United, Juventus,
We are definitely going to finish bottom 4 this year and I can see the Hawks being around that mark too but still will beat us comfortably this week. They should win by 5-6 goals IMO

Hawks and Bombers trying to out-mozz each other.

Have some confidence in your sides, you cowards.

If you can’t be confident in Round 1 you should pack it in, or follow North.
