Between 2004 and 2051 the population of Queensland is projected to increase by 77%, the Northern Territory by 75% and Western Australia by 60%, well above the projected growth for Australia of 40%.

New South Wales is projected to remain the most populous state in Australia,
although its share of Australia's population will decline slightly, from 33% at June 2004 to
31% in 2051. Queensland will replace Victoria in 2041 as the second most populous state,
with Queensland's share of Australia's population increasing from 19% to 24% over the
next 50 years, and Victoria's share decreasing from 25% to 23%.

Western Australia will increase its share of Australia's population from 9.8% at
June 2004 to 11.2% in 2051, while South Australia's share will decline from 7.6% to 5.6%
over the same period. Similarly, Tasmania's share will decline from 2.4% in 2004 to 1.6%
in 2051. The Northern Territory's share will remain more or less the same, increasing
marginally from 1.0% to 1.2%. Likewise the Australian Capital Territory's share will
change only marginally, decreasing from 1.6% to 1.4%.

Sydney and Melbourne to remain the two most populous cities in
Australia, with 5.6 million and 5.0 million people respectively in 2051, followed by
Brisbane (3.4 million), Perth (2.5 million), Adelaide (1.2 million), the Australian Capital
Territory (401,600), Darwin (232,300) and Hobart (219,600). Darwin's population will
exceed Hobart's in 2048.

Interesting stuff Roger - particularly the stat that shows Perth's population more than double Adelaide's (Hello - 2 new teams in Perth by 2050 - as suggested in my other post).

Also, the increasing population of Queensland will justify a 3rd team by mid-Century, and NSW/ACT will definitely need 2 more teams by then. Newcastle and a 3rd Sydney or perhaps a Canberra team. Who knows.

Australian Football (AFL) FTW.

Yes its all fine to comment on ABS projections. I just wonder what effect economic & climatic changes might have on such projections.
Its all supposition at this stage, but the more frequent severe weather events we are seeing may affect the 'tropic change' that people have been making over the last few decades.
Also the construction jobs boom in mining development is slowing down. Mining itself is high tech so their wont be that many jobs in running the mines as in the building phase needed.
Another recent factor has been the value of the OZ$. It is finally starting to fall which will help manufacturing/export businesses in the southern states.
So the growth projections based on historic trends are probably more open to opinion now that they have been.
IMO

Well, to make it more balanced - perhaps it should go to 24 Teams. I am going to post on this shortly. The fixture works out pretty well with 24 teams - believe it or not. Yeah - no NAB Cup though, and 2 weeks of practise.
24 teams would be great, but the standard of play would drop,

Im surprised that Perth, WA doesnt get a mention that often for a 3rd AFL team, The Eagles & The Dockers both have 45kplus members, & there is a 7year waiting list for the eagles. both get good crowds as WA AFL mad state, even for the cricket & various other sporting events they have good turn outs,

Makes the AFL's effort into QLD and NSW a bit of reading into the future. Say what you want but to keep the best stars you need money, to do that you need to be number 1. The AFL are making sure that Aussie Rules stays that way.

No matter where expansion is the standard of play will drop for a few years for the juniors in the area to "grow" to cover it. Its been the same for every code every time there was expansion since the beginning of time. Short sightedness by some fans (not meaning you) is what might bring back Aussie Rules from being so dominant in this country.

very true, but the other thing that needs to be considered, is the financial stability of a team, most so long term, given time to build a supporter base & sponsorship. setting up teams in Western Sydney and Gold Coast where good moves, as they are based in Large Populated areas. ive always said WA could easily have 3rd team based there, as WA are AFL mad and usually have good crown turn outs to games as well as being a Wealthy city due to its Huge mining industry. with half if it being gold mining which is very stable, unlike coal, iron ore and so on.

the AFL needs to fix up problems in its own back year first, with struggling teams, Bulldogs, North & Melbourne St kilda

Its hard to fix a problem when the AFL caused it themselves. Too many teams in the one city all struggling to expand in a market that is already overcrowded with professional teams in various codes all fighting for clear air.
The first step is for the AFL to admit the problem. But since they are never wrong, the merry go round will continue.

there are to many teams in Melbourne & with budgets and costs rising, the afl has to stop handing out money and get tough on some decisions. hawthorn are playing more home games in Tassie and North are following, but teams like Demons and the bulldogs have been pension clubs for years

Just out of interest - what chance do you think of more AFL activity in New Zealand?

I know St Kilda are testing the waters with a game in Wellington, but how much more will happen by 2025?

Bugger all, hopefully. They struggle to get interested in Rugby League, so what hope us...? Waste of a fixture...

As much as growing the game is good. Now they have expanded I firmly believe in nurturing the games heart land now. We need to be trying to get all the migrants in Australia to ditch the round ball. Also spending money to improve grass roots football in the rural communities as well as in the big cities.

The AFL have been mainly interested in maximising their media income & holding onto the old VFL clubs. Where does the heartland outside of big cities fit into that strategy? I cant see where they have done much for rural communities.
They already have a multicultural round & do Auskick to recognise migrants & attract kids.
The heartland most disadvantaged by the AFL is here in Tasmania. Sure we get FIFO clubs to play here. We pay them. They take the money & fly home. Our football continues to decline. Try fixing that.

More or less keeping the rest of the comp, maybe adding another team in Perth and reducing Vic clubs to 8 (North and Bulldogs seem most likely candidates). The big moves comes with SA having 4 teams, and the SANFL folding in effect so that it goes like this: The SANFL and WAFL merge for the reserve teams to have a comp. And at under-age level, keep the teams separate to there's more spots for the kids to develop - like the TAC cup.

Adelaide (gets a reserves team)
Port (Eagles "merge" to form a stronger club in that North West area)
Norwood (Sturt, North "merge" to form a stronger supporter/corporate base)
Glenelg (West & South "merge" to form a stronger/supporter/corporate base)

Rough draft, open to scrutiny.

Probably will not happen, but WA would handle another side, and a north QLD team would be the go IMO.

Looking at 2025 BTW

I agree. Collingwood has too many supporters. Lets spread them around to other clubs by folding Collingwood.

19 - Tas

20 - I'd love to see WA3... added tribalism in Perth metro... but what is it? NOR v SOR is already covered.
Joondalup is a laugh and is already West Coast territory. Mandurah is too far away and new side would have to play out of Optus anyway...
Going for some generic "Perth United" with tenuous links to the WAFL's Falcons/Dees/Royals sides will struggle for support early on...
... basically another GCS that the AFL would have to prop up for little reward given that WA is already heart land footy... it's just not expansion.

If #20 is forced because of Tassie's entry... you may as well go for Canberra... get the Giants back to NSW and be a full time Sydney side with a few games played at Blacktown. Canberra is lost territory to the game, but can be reclaimed in time... bringing in support from regional areas in Albury/Wodgonga, Riverina, etc. , moving the Barassi line further into NSW as a result. Canberra Rams - Navy, Baby Blue and Gold. Capital Represent!

They could train out of the waca. North already have supporters over here.
Perth does not have its name in the comp yet.
Centered in Perth with kangaroo fans in Melbourne that want to stick with their colors.
Wafl will go back to an 8 side comp.
Great area & base it work from.

Merge bullies with st kilda.
Send the vacant license to Tasmania where they can kick off under their own steam.

Any vacuum left in Melbourne can be afl targeted for melbourne.

Perth get 2 optus games a week with population of 2 million.
Tassie get their own brand new team which they are entitled to.
Melbourne loses that glut of financially under performing waste baskets.

The game is allowed to continue growing in qld & nsw who will need financial support for another decade.

Why would Dogs merge when we have some of the strongest finances, won a flag 4 years ago, and are competing for finals? Saints have done a ton of work to improve their position too in recent years.

If any Vic clubs merged, it's North and Melbourne, and even then that wouldn't happen
