I think the issue is that the AFL suddenly decided to crack down on 50s that they have been letting go all season when they should have been paid.

Essendon for years now have been able to get over downtrodden teams and then get found out against the real teams- then fall away. Rinse and repeat every year. This game won’t teach them much, just par for the course.

Essendon famously lose to teams below them, and occasionally have a huge upset. We used to lose to 18th with regularity, even when we were a mediocre team who would hang around the 8.

It's only this year, and last year that we have consistently beaten poor teams and we never smash anybody. It's growth. We will start to beat average teams soon. First time I've been confident in seeing growth in 20 years.
