Former Sun (and Saint) Andrew McQualter's first game as head coach of an AFL team and it just so happens to be against his old club, the Suns, and he'll be coaching against his biggest mentor in Damien Hardwick. Pretty interesting situation for Mini to be in considering his history as a player and an assistant coach being linked to the Gold Coast/Dimma. Unfortunately, McQualter's former teammate Dave Swallow got hurt last week, but that would've added to the moment even more. Liam Baker's first game for the Eagles as well and he was obviously coached by both Dimma and Mini at Richmond. I would've thought Owies will also debut for West Coast in this one. On the Suns side, it will be Dan Rioli and John Noble's first game for their new club.

With the exception of Flanders and Walter, the Suns will essentially be full strength for this game. West Coast will be without Sheed and Yeo. I'm really excited to see how Mac Andrew goes in this game knowing he dominated last time he played in Perth (3 goals, should've been 4) and obviously it's his first game since signing that mammoth contract at the end of last year. I also think Rioli could have an absolute blinder in his first game for the Suns. He seems very determined to prove his worth based on what I've seen/heard in the off season.

Suns by 26 points.

AFL have a habit of making sure such matchups occur early in the season, if not first up in order to try and generate even a little more interest.

Oh, and Wosh firstly, thank you for doing this! But there is a minor typo in the margins poll 'Suns by 7 - 2-' should presumably be 'Suns by 7 - 20'.

Fixed, thanks.

Danger game for the Suns. These are the away games they need to win if they’re going to improve on last year’s “excellent at home, terrible on the road” pattern.

Think they’ll get it done but not without a scare. Suns by a couple of goals after an arm wrestle all afternoon.

Seems to be rumours of the flu or similar sweeping through the Eagles camp. Bo Allan is ruled out through sickness and I believe Oscar Allen is in doubt with a bug too.

If its true then expect us to be witches hats this week.

That's my concern to be honest.

We NEED to start winning away, and this is probably as good a chance as we're going to get to break that hoodoo.

Win and everyone will say it's 'as expected, no big deal', lose and it'll be portrayed as a crisis.
Reality is somewhere between.

Game 1 is always a lot more random than most of the season (as crappy as opening round might be, it would have been a useful settler for us), and there will be plenty more chances to win away when we're more settled....but it will be very nice to do it now.

Any truth to this rumour? Huge loss for the Eagles if Oscar Allen misses. Probably takes away any chance they had of winning this game if he's absent.

Suns should be a dominant midfield and solid down back - but whether we can turn that into goals will decide the game.
The forward line doesn't install much confidence.

If we can get quick ball movement from Rioli, a fit Weller, Noble and now second year Clohesy I think we should be right.

You can tell the game is in Perth, it's sunny.

Also, I wonder if the GC marketing/jumper design team cringe everytime they don't see the new logo on their jumper. Funny how red on red works.
