Port are really the team that doesn't know who they are, until they realise they are in the AFL and forget their SANFL past, they will continue to get flogged at home. Unfortunate hamstring injuries sour the Cats win a bit, but . Danger gets a hammy every year and they should be able to cover him with Stewart returning? Big chance for one of the newbies? IMO the Brownlow is almost in the bag for Bailey Smith, providing he doesn't get sucked in by his ex teammates next week who will do every thing they can to upset him.

Port need to dump their 'We exist to win premierships' mantra and adopt something for the AFL.

It was borne out of the backwater SANFL and doesn't apply here. AFL flags are damn hard to win and setting that as your motto to live by is unattainable. Just making it to GF's requires a lot of skill, a lot of well thought out planning and a little bit of luck.

In the big league no one exists to win premierships. We all hope that when your club gets a list worthy of winning one that you don't waste it. That's all. Nothing more, nothing less.

Congrats Cats. Seen O'Connor racked up a good number of disposals - take it he played well? How did Mullin go?

Cheers in advance.

O’Connor did play well yes, and not just when the game was over or anything. Disposal was good, not just his heritage that he shares with Tuohy; he seems to be doing something similar in terms of turning himself into a good role player at such a rate that you kind of don’t notice that it’s happened, he’s just suddenly a really dependable type.

Mullin was good as well

Thanks. Seen a couple of comments during the Pies game on here (I know, it's the internet) calling him more or less muck. Always had the impression he looked dependable anytime I've seen the Cats play, Mullin haven't seen him so much. AFL.com had him playing as an inside midfielder. šŸ¤” But assume he was tagging someone?

O’Connor is fine. Never going to be a world beater but very solid at what he has to do.

Mullin tagged butters and held him to 20 fairly inconsequential touches, just needs to find a way to get a bit more of the ball himself as the genuine gun taggers tend to do

Cheers. Good to hear they're part of the team on merit & not as some form of project/let's put them in there because of their nationality. Playing in the most congested part of the pitch is still a learning curve for Mullin & Nash at The Hawks (as well as swinging his arm right in Miers mush 😬)

Every team has a few Debbie Downers and sooks who always look for the negatives or have a 'pet hate' player they target. The sorts of people who seem to follow sporting teams just to give themselves something to complain and whine about.

O'Connor has had a very solid season and we seem to have found his best role off half-back.

Mullin we are using as a tagger/shutdown player, to make use of his skills such as speed and toughness while he is still developing elite-level skills. We previously tried to use O'Connor in this role, but he's been freed up because Mullin is now taking that role.

Yeah, suppose that's all par for the course in all sports. I remember the specific 'thing' why he got a bit of stick for it. It was in the 1st quarter, & O'Connor was chasing back & got beaten for a contested mark - he looked a bit jelly legged & the Pies player could have been fresh off the bench. I thought it was just a good kick by the opposition rather than O'Connor being awful. Yeah, I seen a clip of him on Lachie Neale and didn't seem like he done badly.

I wonder if conserving energy is an attribute the Irish players need to get used to, as they come from a game where it's balls to the wall from the off, but at this point he's been playing more Aussie Rules than Gaelic football. I watched the higlights & thought Mullin did quite well shadowing Butters, but you lads would have a different, more intricate perspective on it than us new to the game.

Lads,.sorry,.one more question: what would Mullin need add to his game to play in that role more regularly? Vision, more proficient at kicking, tackling, being a playmaker of sorts, etc.

His skill level seems fine when he has the ball in hand. Just read the play better when the ball is in dispute, probably, so he can contribute a bit more offensively and be a ball winner and get some more of it himself. The good taggers if that is to be his role, can get 15+ possessions themselves and hurt you back the other way

He's coming along nicely, does need to work on his tackling technique as he tends to give away free kicks for getting into a player's back.

The other thing would just be general awareness, has been caught holding the football a number of times, and probably should have been a couple more. 360 degree pressure, and needs to be a little more convincing in his attempts to get rid of the footy when tackled.

O'Connor seems to be a master of 'taking the tackle' without actually turning over the ball. Admirable how he puts his head over it when it's his turn to go.

F'king hell. Suppose if anyone can get him to try/do it, no better person than Scott. Think he's one of the most impressive coaches across all sports I've listened to.

Thanks. Who do teams work with for coaching tackling, grappling coaches? Read Tuohy's book mentioning pre-season training wrestling on the beach which made me think for a second, but does make sense given the variety of ways there are to tackle.
