So where is the elite talent under 25? Weddle - sure. Watson? - maybe but a small forward doesn’t get you far.

It’s a middling list that maybe has one Bulldogs run up their sleeve if luck falls their way but I can’t see it having sustained success.

We might shell some middling picks off in a few months time for some elite talent.

Know anyone?

It really just hasn’t maxed out already. Hawthorn have more talent in their big toe.

Our most impactful players are either young or prime aged players?
Like who? Impey and Gunston won you the game tonight. Weddle is the obvious one under 25 and Moore is decent (although inconsistent) and in his prime.

Who else is there? Ward? MacDonald? Butler? These guys will not be the difference in a flag winning side

Your best players tonight

Gunston - 40 something?
Impey - 29
Moore - 25
Barrass - 29
Hardwick - 28
Weddle - 21

Your worst
Mitchell - 22
Ginnivan - 22
Watson - 20
Hustwaite - 20
Newcombe - 23
Coaches votes last week vs the Doggies

9 Mabior Chol (HAW) - 28
9 Jai Newcombe (HAW) - 23
5 Joshua Weddle (HAW) - 21
3 Josh Ward (HAW) - 21
2 Lloyd Meek (HAW) - 27

In the best Ginnivan - 22

Weird game, some odd decisions for both sides by the umps and poor kicking in front of goal - Meek for the Hawks and #36 or 37 for them. Crows will be majorly pissed off not to have pulled away.

My campaign to put it in people's heads that Keane is AA quality probably has hit a road block. 😀 Well done Hawks.

Free kick count 18-6 in the second half. Convenient?

Most of our under 25 players are sub-elite , but tracking upwards. That is normal for talented players not taken in the top 3 or 4,as they generally take more time than a player from the very pointy end of the draft.

There are several under 25 players who are tracking to be elite at some point.
As you said, Weddle and Watson, but also Ward based on his form from the last few weeks where he seems to have clicked, and if he keeps building will be approaching elite. MacDonald likewise. D'Ambrosio somewhat down in form, but made the extended all-australian squad last year. Newcombe is borderline elite as evidenced by the fact he's getting a hard tag many weeks, but needs to learn to break those tags to be considered elite, only 23, and with Day back in the site will be less likely to be the first tagging option. Butler lost a big chunk of development with the broken leg, so it is too early to call where he will land. Cam Mackenzie is quite highly rated, but working on some deficits at Box Hill at the moment, has some elite attributes, so if he can fill the gaps (or expand his strengths) might make it to elite level. Dear also showed a lot in his small number of games, but hasn't recovered form since coming back from injury. Obviously not all of those players will end up elite, but they don't need to be. A few make it, we recruit a few ready made players from the feeder clubs like Eagles and we'll hope to make the next step - certainly not there yet. Put it this way, right now I'd much rather be holding Carlton's 2025 first rounder than Hawthorn's. Don't worry, I'm sure you'll have another chance to post in the Eagles board's hawthorn death ride thread before the year is done.

:)

In general I think Hawthorn fans were not too bitter towards the clubs that took Mitchell, Lewis , Hodge and Gunston, but having a semi-recent (although now fading) three-peat certainly helped cushioned us in that regard. I think we certainly felt a bit more angst over Smith to Geelong, but also found it hard to not laugh at Smith's cheekyness with his "I've already won Geelong one final" comments just after the trade was done :)

Smith to Geelong sucked but we wouldn’t have had a rookie spot for Dylan Moore if he didn’t leave. Ended up doing us a favour and he went alright at the cats too

Genuinely though.

We finish last this year and we get pick 1 and 2 plus 10-12 from you guys to add to our up and coming crop.

You guys peter out to a first or second week exit again and another year of your best players approaching or passing 30. You’ve peaked far too early without adding the elite talent required for a proper push to the top.
You get a future first that’s likely to be above pick 12. Calm. Hawthorn then get a top 12 pick from Carlton..

Moore (25).

Weddle.

Etc

You seem real interested in what a loving family is. Not something you have experience with?
in the interest of being open, I think I have a decent family dynamic. Both my siblings are in my court, mum is mum, she loves us but in the fairly cold wasps way she was brought up.

Dad, rest his soul, was the most confusing. He loved me more than anyone, but we also clashed more. If I’m being honest it was sometimes hard but overall rewarding

Tex is cooked, but Fog and Thilthorpe are both horrendously out of form. Thilthorpe's miss in the first quarter was especially costly.
I disagree that Fogarty is out of form. 28 goals and 5 behinds before this Hawks game says otherwise.

You can debate about Tilthorpes recent form. Even then, 28 goals and 16 behinds before this Hawks game says other wise

Thought the Thilthorpe kick off the ground was more costly. If he knocks that on to Keays it is probably game over

Moore inconsistent? He was AA last year ffs.

Hasn’t had a great start to this year (in part due to team structures) but still averaging 18 and a goal.

Weddle, Ward, Moore, Butler, MacDonald all strong contributors.

Weddle 23 disposals and plenty of run off half back, strong aerially. Turned the game in the third.

Watson had good moments despite a low disposal count. (5 score inv).

Ward solid game again after a good year, had 20 with 3 clearances 5 tackles and 4 inside 50s. Class and cleanliness in a scrappy game.

Butler 19 with 4 clearances 6 tackles and 4 inside 50s. Speed and dynamic mixup through the middle.

MacDonald had 14 disposals (10 contested) 2 goals 6 score inv and 8 tackles.

Moore 23 with 11 contested 13 tackles 5 inside 50s and 5 score inv.

Newcombe despite being tagged kicked the winning goal and had 15, 6 tackles, 5 inside 50s and a goal.

All 25 and under who played big parts in the win. Gunston and Impey the main two others.
