This is insane to me, how is the AFL not making a bigger issue out of this?
A guy was standing on the edge of the square while the ball was dead, and then they ran off the ground.

It’s not like he got a kick or helped score/stop a goal.

It's not really relevant to the rule. It's just an automatic free kick and 50m penalty. Would have given Carlton a shot for goal to put them up 16 when they had momentum. Instead a warning was given.

I promise you if this was Carlton and they had won the reaction would be overwhelming from non-Carlton supporters.

I'd love to have Day play for my team. Great player !
26 disposals, 5 clearances, 7 inside 50’s, 5 tackles, 7 score involvements….

“Should be ashamed”

I mean, sure, outrage is a massive part of the AFL, but really a free kick for what happened would also be completely over the top.

I just don't think it's relevant. We give 50m penalties for players stepping 30cm over the mark. I think that's way over the top but we still pay it because it's an AFL rule. In this case the rule is a free kick + 50m penalty should have been paid.

Like Carlton getting 62.5% of their goals via umpire assistance? Or did you conveniently missed that part of the game
I'm not sure why that matters. If the free kick is there you should pay it no matter where it is on the field. A team can get 100% of their goals from free kicks and all of them may be clear cut.

Free kick numbers are meaningless. If you think the free kicks were incorrectly awarded than that's fine. However, they are not automatically wrong because they led to a goal.

2 of them were horrendously bad decisions

Ive always wondered, do umpires get reprimanded behind the scenes for blatant bad decisions?
Very rarely do you hear an umpire get dropped. All four umpires that were part of yesterday's game will umpire games next week. Mark my words. Been an issue for a long time - complete lack of accountability from the AFL. Coaches can't mention them without getting fined. Players the same. It's just poor.

Yeh agreed. They need to have some sort of accountability. Player contact is a perfect example, the player gets fined yet it is the players domain ! and they have eyes purely for the ball.

If you are going to dish it out don't leave yourself so open next time.

You essentially owned yourself.

I think the only person youre arguing with is yourself. Because I honestly have no ****ing clue what you are talking about.

Hawks won and Im very happy. Blues are 0 - 2 and have a coach who has no answers.

Both teams ducked, flopped, dived and staged for free kicks consistently all night. Both sides were rewarded for it.

I didn't see it as a screw job to either team.

Exactly. The umpires were soft on a bunch of frees and missed a bunch of frees which were there. This happens in every game, every week. Players make mistakes and umpires make mistakes. There were also a few confusing 50m penalties, but given we dont hear the mics we have no idea if it was for umpire abuse or something else.

We are winning all 3 games without the umpires. Carlton got 5 of their first 6 goals from free kicks. But because Hawthorn won those arent worth discussing.

Its like only complaining about frees in the last 5 or 10 minutes affecting close games. If the frees were paid earlier in the game maybe it never would have been that close.

Etc.

Also, CARN THE HAWKS !!

Play hadnt restarted after the goal. So presumably the interchange umpire assumed no penalty existed.

Sounds like it needs to happen at any point in time other than after the siren.

Someone lost a lot of money on him, most likely.

It doesn't. The AFL have come out and said Carlton should have received a free kick and 50m penalty. Instead Hawthorn got a 666 warning.

That's what Im saying. The 19 player penalty should happen any time during the quarter, even after a goal when play is dead. I daresay this is the mistake the interchange umpire made.

Also, how did the Hawk monitor let it happen. Will be getting some stern words today I assume.

12 tackles + five clearances - had a decent outing. He was always a contest to contest player.

That's your problem.

You play an attrition game where you run a lot of scrimmages and move the ball like rugby. Must be tiring.

Therefore, my point on Sam Walsh still stands.
