People who say 'we need to include the other states!' are children, classic participation award culture shit.

You're not footy states or you're too small. This isn't clapping the fat kid finishing his 100 metre ten minutes later than everyone else at the school carnival.

WA and SA always against Victoria is fine.

The AFL is spending tens of millions every year on promoting football in 'the other states'.

Do you really think they're going to turn around and say '**** you' to them over this?

Rightly or wrongly, it sounds like they'll be going with the 'allies' concept, so players from 'the other states' will still get to play representative level of football (even if it's not for their state as such).

Expect next year to be.
WA v Allies
SA v Vic.

To be fair, West Australians would go to the opening of an envelope if it had their state name on it.

Smart of the AFL to cash in on their rabid parochialism. While the crowds keep coming they should continue to host it.

Just on the contest, it was played at an intensity of just above an exhibition match.

I really hope the new rules weren’t the reason the game was so uncontested and a sign of things to come, and it was just how the players decided to play on the day.

The Victorian captain spilt the beans on the intent of the players in his post match speech. Win, but make it close and a spectacle. Had the feeling everyone was holding hands on this.

Why should we give NSW and QLD afl origin when we don’t have NRL origin?
This is the wrong way to look at it. We should be celebrating the fact that we're actually capable of holding a truly national state competition. That is massive in itself and it's something the NRL will likely never achieve. You don't purposely hurt your own expansion into emerging markets just purely because your opposition is unable to expand into your strongest market. That's non-sensicle thinking.

Agreed. The NRL can't do a South Australia vs Victoria State of Origin as there are no where near enough NRL players to field teams for either state.

NSW and QLD in AFL though, they would be made up of entirely AFL players and would be very good teams too. We should not just be celebrating that, but also by playing the game pointing out how much of a national code we are.

It would also further encourage junior athletes in the northern states to play/stay with Aussie rules because that would no longer be a point of distinction between the two football codes. A lot of junior athletes in QLD and NSW grow up dreaming about representing their state at the professional level because NRL Origin is a big deal up here. If we offer the same opportunity (albeit on a smaller scale to begin with) then we're more likely to attract talented juniors to our sport because they know they'll get the opportunity to play for their state at the professional level regardless of which sport they choose.

Imagine being a player like Dylan Patterson who played both Aussie rules and rugby league at a high level growing up and was offered professional contracts from five NRL teams between the ages of 15-18. He knew there was the potential carrot of representing QLD in NRL Origin one day and that would've made the decision more difficult. The choice to stick with Aussie rules potentially becomes easier for a talented mutli-sport junior athlete like Patterson if he knows he's going to get opportunities to represent his state of QLD in AFL Origin as well.

The potential is huge if the AFL uses this opportunity correctly.

Yep. The only problem is that the AFL is still very Victoria centric so they may not even realise the opportunity they have with this.

Allies is a bigger "**** you" than no team, but its almost certainly the way they would go and likely kill the origin concept again.

Looks decent enough to me...

The New South Wales team isn't bad, either. QLD and NSW are pretty evenly matched in a hypothetical AFL Origin match.

I think bringing in too many states dilutes the product. No disrespect meant, but there is no rivalry with QLD or NSW in AFL, it won’t draw the same crowds as WA or SA will get when they play Vic, or even when WA play SA, and their teams will be weaker.

There is always a rivalry between QLD and NSW, no matter the topic.

You don't think QLD and NSW have a rivalry outside of the NRL? You've obviously never lived here.

I think you play both next year as they can compliment each other. SA v VIC at the 53k Adelaide Oval would be the Saturday night main event and QLD v NSW in a smaller stadium (probably the 37k Gabba) would be the Friday night appetiser. Gets 90% of the country involved and then WA come back the following year and you establish a proper competition format to bring prestige / meaning to each AFL Origin fixture. IMO that'd be a great way to promote our national game and it genuinely separates us from the NRL because we can run a real state-based national competition that they can only dream of.

Allies is pointless, no one in Perth would bother going to a game where WA aren’t playing SA or Vic.

so you’re sidelining WA (a traditional football state) in favour of a NSW v QLD game. Yeah nah that doesn’t work for me. You will not get a crowd like what they got at Optus in QLD or in NSW… sorry that’s facts.
When NRL opens up origin for the other states, you can have an AFL origin game.

How is it sidelining? The AFL can organise 2 state of origin games in one week, it is possible.

It wouldn't be WA getting sidelined. if that year was SA v Vic, WA wouldn't be playing a game regardless of whether NSW played Qld or not.
