It's about time some mods started being fair
We've now experienced the latest AFLX offering and some things have come quite clear.
AFLX has been developed as a promotional tool in much the same way rugyb7s was developed as a tournament game to spread the game of rugby. To my knowledge, no rugby7s leagues have been setup and rugby7s remains a tournament game.
No one is doubting the contribution of rugby7s to helping traditional rugby.
So why has the AFL created AFLX when the world plays 9-a-side football?
Because 9-a-side football played by AFL players would be just a mega shootout. AFLX was created as promotional vehicle like rugby7s to make AFL promotions affordable overseas. There is no real intent for AFLX to supplant 9-a-side football.
AFLX is entertainment similar to IHR and should be seen as such. The present configuration of draft and absence of regional representation makes it impossible to attach too much association with teams outside of the players themselves.
In that regard AFLX needs to alter it's format. A S.O.O. type of concept has been widely suggested.
Certainly something needs to be done to mimic the BBL atmosphere.
As for overseas implications, there are none, until Australians take up a liking to the game.
The AFL would be looking to successful Australian AFLX promotions to sell the idea of overseas productions.
Again the AFLX is following the rugby7s idea with Hong Kong being suggested despite there being
little Australian Football action and a difficult scenario for Australian Football development.
Personally, I see IHR as more entertaining as at least there is the option of barracking for a country.
I see AFLX as entertaining and I'm sure that the AFL will put some more thought into the game.
I don't see AFLX taking over from 9-s-side football at all. AFLX is too far different and gimmickry
but I do see the time when 9-a-side needs to be altered in response to increased skill levels making it a shootout.
