We've now experienced the latest AFLX offering and some things have come quite clear.
AFLX has been developed as a promotional tool in much the same way rugyb7s was developed as a tournament game to spread the game of rugby. To my knowledge, no rugby7s leagues have been setup and rugby7s remains a tournament game.
No one is doubting the contribution of rugby7s to helping traditional rugby.

So why has the AFL created AFLX when the world plays 9-a-side football?
Because 9-a-side football played by AFL players would be just a mega shootout. AFLX was created as promotional vehicle like rugby7s to make AFL promotions affordable overseas. There is no real intent for AFLX to supplant 9-a-side football.

AFLX is entertainment similar to IHR and should be seen as such. The present configuration of draft and absence of regional representation makes it impossible to attach too much association with teams outside of the players themselves.
In that regard AFLX needs to alter it's format. A S.O.O. type of concept has been widely suggested.
Certainly something needs to be done to mimic the BBL atmosphere.

As for overseas implications, there are none, until Australians take up a liking to the game.
The AFL would be looking to successful Australian AFLX promotions to sell the idea of overseas productions.
Again the AFLX is following the rugby7s idea with Hong Kong being suggested despite there being
little Australian Football action and a difficult scenario for Australian Football development.

Personally, I see IHR as more entertaining as at least there is the option of barracking for a country.
I see AFLX as entertaining and I'm sure that the AFL will put some more thought into the game.
I don't see AFLX taking over from 9-s-side football at all. AFLX is too far different and gimmickry
but I do see the time when 9-a-side needs to be altered in response to increased skill levels making it a shootout.

It looks like AFLX may be on the outer in Australia at least at AFL House with this announcement to make way for the expanded 2020 AFLW comp.
However we never know for sure what is happening these days, and there were many grand statements were made in support of it.

That article is written by a company man. Not even a slight admission that they got it wrong by inventing AFLX.

They got it wrong in how they positioned it and handing it over to the marketing team to run.

The small sided elite version of the game is still a must

The problem was not AFLX but what they said about AFLX.
1. The AFL said they were going to take AFLX to the world. Instead they had some Mickey Mouse tournament.
They could have at least been a little imaginative an had S.O.O. AFLX.
The tournament arrangement and timing made sure it was a non-event.
2. It was implied by many people that AFLX would become the new standard for overseas competition.
Unfortunately, the standard overseas is still at 9-a-side. AFLX is basically just two less men and a lot of b.s.
3. The worst idea was that the AFL curtailed the AFLW for AFLX at a time when they should have been maximising AFLW.
They should have doubled the AFLW season even if they played half the games each week.

The idea of taking AFLX to a place like Hong Kong or the Middle East, mimicking what they do in rugby, has merit.
AFLX in Australia, especially tournament style has little merit.
AFLX for other than AFL players also has little merit.

The next big question is - Will AFL House take AFLX to Hong Kong now that their plans for Australia are now cancelled.
Or anywhere overseas - Gil was driving this concept and will he think it is all too hard - There are rumours his tenure is maybe about to finish in the next 2/3 years.
Apparently he maybe joining the board of Crown Casino which as a head of a sports organisation IMHO is not a good look.

IMO, probably not. I suggest that a successful Australian tournament would have been used to sell overseas.
Still not out of the question, but highly unlikely even without the political unrest.

IMO. it's highly natural to look at a replacement in that time frame regardless of performance.
IMO Gil has done a good job. AFLX was rushed and they sacrificed AFLW, but AFLX is available on standby and the AFLW continues to develop.
The AFL has done an absolute bastard job with the rules (laws) especially with the way they "sell" changes.
The "starting positions" is just an extension of the "centre square" and the kick-in is just a messed up "free kick".
The AFL have seemed to have stop pushing IR and that is good with Ireland being so recalcitrant.
IR was good at developmental level but it's need has dropped away and Ausball is a much better developmental tool.
There has even been some mention of S.O.O. which would be good.

Gil gets all the credit for the formation of the AFLW - That is beyond dispute and will be his considerable legacy as it has turned out when he steps down.
I have not seen any decent interviews to date when someone sensible approaches him on the topic.
Had completely forgotten about the International Rules set up - Like most AFL supporters in Australia. The Irish GAA IMHO were never completely on board.
It is very interesting how things Irish have turned out- The GAA fears with IR were very obvious - So they now have to cope with their male and female players travelling to Australia to play.
However the go home factor with the Irish is still evident so that may balance the books out.
I think the 6-6-6 rule at the bounce suits some clubs more than others- The Eagles love it when NicNat gets a clear knock to Shuey and he races to the forward line which is open because the opposition has not had time set up defence like they used to pre 6-6-6.
Actually really like the new fullback kick in strategy but it has not given any advantages one way or another- The clubs still like to keep to the flanks defensively when clearing the opposition attacking zone.
But we are well off topic now on our main interest - International Footy.

Au contraire.
The creation the AFLW has been a huge boost to the organic growth of Australian Football overseas.
The creation of IR was a great benefit to many clubs struggling for competition and players.
Nothing is more important than the laws of the game and it's a definite "loose end" that needs tidying up.
We need simple, concise and the least number of laws to sell the game even to Australians.
As I said before, i make a point of asking overseas players what they like about the game
and what they see as confusing. We should listen.

My impression is that there is a definite theme amongst foreign players when asked what they like about the game, but it's a difficult thing to put your finger on it. In many respects, it's often as much about the concept of the "footy club", as it is about the game itself (perhaps the two are one and the same thing?)

There is a whole swag of reasons why people like Australian Football.
Often you'll see clubs and leagues promoting different attributes.
Different people and different regions have different weightings on the reasons.

The prime reason why people like Australian Football is the game itself.
It is in everybody's interest to have the best possible game.

I caught the last quarter of the legend's game at MRS.
Well credos to the AFL for trying to:
1. Find the right product match.
2. Bringing the crowd closer to the action.
3. Attempting to compensate for the droppoff in skills with a smaller field.
But I didn't find it entertaining at all.
1. There didn't seem to be much promotion for the game (in Perth).
2. It did seem a miserable night but the stands looked decideldy thin.
3. Rather than compensate, the smaller field seemed to amplify mistakes.
4. WTF was the contested marking and tackling or contest fullstop.
5. Was it supposed to be AFLX or just a rectangular field? It looked like netball but not as good.
IMO it's time to get back to basics, starting with the laws of the game.
