Watching the Crows v Cats game on TV at the moment, this is almost the exact reason for AO. I know it was wet that day, but the amount of blue seats is depressing. Going to Footy Park has been a chore, going to AO will be an experience. Crowds of 30,000 or less will be a thing of the past.

Even when it's wet or gloomy, it'll be a far better crowd (especially with more undercover seats).

Agree.

As a football club, we already have a reputation of being a bunch if theatre goers, now this. We need to make football the number one attraction, not a secondary even.

If we got the Foo Fighters, U2, KISS, Blink 182 or some think like that, how many non footy people would go just for the music.

As a club, we have it back to selling football as our core business and looking after our key demographic, instead of just pissing them off even more with stupid ideas.
If I got to see Dave Grohl, Matt Bellamy, or Alex Turner after a Crows game, I'd be chuffed. I think it's an awesome idea, especially if it's a "after game only". Trigg could do a lot of sucking up and give members free entry.

Agree with what you are saying but the honeymoon will only last so long. We will have to get people coming back to the footy because they enjoy watching footy and actually supporting the club.

IIRC - the honeymoon period lasted about 12 to 24 months for the 36ers when they moved from the Apollo Stadium to the Powerhouse before people stopped going and the club had to market basketball again.

Read my sig peeps.

I'm actually from darwin. The nearest afl club to me is 3000km away and i dont have an affiliation with any of them. Any that come near me only do so because they are told too. I am from an old st marys family in darwin, thats my team.

As to the answer, zaccas post reeked of yay adelaide rather than any thought or research as to why the SCG project is progressing as is.

These are complex and difficult buildings and both the ao and scg are extremely high quality.
I realise this forum is technically a "football" forum, but let's be honest: it's about AFL. If you don't follow an AFL team, I must ask, why bother posting on a footy forum?

Football would then become an afterthought. Not the main product.

It's debatable. If it's on a semi-stage and for a few songs, it keeps football the main product. I can't see them being able to bring on a full stage and pump out a theatrical. But then it would seem a waste to bring an international band over for a couple of songs. Personally, I think a local act for a couple of songs before the game could be good. Say, Children Collide, Grinspoon, The Living End, Karnivool etc. This has been done at the MCG a few times, and it was quite good.

I hate this crap.

I go to the footy for the footy - if I wanted to go to a concert, I'd go to a concert.

Pre game should be a curtain raiser game of footy, half time should be for discussion of the game. Have a band after if you must.

I'm sorry I totally disagree. How many people are actually interested by a curtain raiser? To have an international act playing would be great and add some excitement to the pre game/half time or whatever it is they decide to do

The entertainment factor is really lacking at the footy these days and as for the people just turning up for the music, that would add up to max 2-3k people and some of them may even become interested in the footy.

The AFC needs to focus on the younger generation, as does every other club and if you two can't cope with that maybe you need to hold your 19th man flag ceremony elsewhere.

There'll be certainly a honey moon period, but I would hope that the fans of both clubs (Crows/Power) will realise how good this new ground is in regards to the spectator experience and facilities, that they will be more likely to return the following week despite form/weather.

AO is just part of the picture. There needs to be other benefits of being there on match day. Take a look at the music industry, with so many people able to just download the music they have had to come up with a reason for the public to but the album in store e.g. a band t-shirt. With the ability to easily watch the game at home these days both the AFC and PAFC need to come up with new ideas to get people to the football and it's great to see that both are currently doing that.

I love the idea of music at the ground. But here is how I see it working;
At the Southern plaza and by the Victor Richardson gates pre-match there are live local bands playing. This gives the bands exposure, costs nothing and adds a buzz as you enter there ground.
Within the ground I'd happily have a band playing at half time, as long as the kids still get to run around on the oval and play. It can only add to the atmosphere. If you don't want the music then pay it no attention, go to the toilet, get a beer etc...
It's all just a bit of fun anyway!

I don't think it needs to detract from the game, I see it more as giving a reason to get there early and stay after. I'd definitely come early to have a few beers and listen to some good music and then stay on for some more after the game (especially if we win) possibly as a start to a night out in town.

If they made the drink prices reasonable, I'd definitely hang around for some music after a game. With the bars they'll have there, they could keep it open late and AO could be the place you kick on at instead of just the opening to a night out.

i'd disagree with that. i reckon the honeymoon lasted 10 years

albeit, the sixers were very successful at the time

They're looking alright so far this season too. I can't remember the last time both the 36'ers and the Redbacks both won on the same weekend.

Adelaide United on the other hand...the less said the better.

Be

Becuase i want to. What is your excuse.
Simples, I actually barrack for an AFL team. "Because I want to" seems like a weak excuse. I was generally curious though, I'm not trying to be an ass. It just seems strange that someone with no legions to an AFL club would post on a forum predominately for AFL club fans.

i would not be too upset if they had a concert after the game, i would prob then be able to drag a couple mates to the footy. But not the bloody Sydney game, a mate has decided to get married that game so i am already not impressed. If they do have a concert it had better be someone crap. If it is someone good, i am going to be mighty peed!! stupid wedding

True and very hard to argue against but it would be interesting to see the membership and crowd figures for the 1996 season; the season before Phil Smyth took over.

Oh shit, that's some very interesting reading.

It didn't feel like that at the time.
my recollection is that 7-8k crowds at the powerhouse weren't uncommon back then. they tapered off when phil smyth went and the sixers subsequently turned to shit
