I mean they would be one of a few mainstream acts big enough to be able to sell out the stadium. THe only others that may would be U2, Green Day, Foo Fighters, Paul McCartney, Coldplay, maybe a few others but it has to be a mainstream act which is multi generational. Can't be the latest metal or hip hop act for instance.

I think the main factor is they happened to be touring here at the time. Just that the other dates haven't been announced yet. I'd be certain it was along the lines of "were trying to get them to Australia, AO are you interested?" more than "Rolling Stones come and launch our stadium and while your here you can tour Sydney and Melbourne".

To get someone big enough to sell it out to specifically come and launch the venue would of cost a huge amount more. I think the important thing here is we now have a venue worthy of these big acts.

NO.

I love Muse but they haven't even sold out the entertainment centre and haven't got enough wide spread appeal. Would rock the place though

Not widespread enough appeal?

They're the best live act around, and sell out everywhere they go, wasn't aware they hadn't last time they were in town.

The Stones are an ok get. Could be better, ie more contemporary like Muse, Foo Fighters, could be worse, ie digging up Cold Chisel, or some B grade punk band, or even worse a reality TV contestant.

One Direction = No thank you
Andre Rieu = No thank you...

I do see your point, in comparison to these mentioned, TRS is a much better idea. Would've been happy with any of Foo Fighters, AC/DC, Cold Chisel, Pearl Jam etc.
One of these bands is not like the others. Also it has one of the biggest arseholes I've ever had the displeasure of working around

And really should go with a great live act. Muse would be perfect but radio here are either old stuff or everything auto tuned. Ie Brittany. Katy perry. Etc

Yes, they are playing the Entertainment Centre on December 4. 2 weeks away and it hasn't sold out, why would they sell out Adelaide Oval? Muse are an awesome band, but as i said do not have a wide enough appeal to sell out AO.

But every generation is going to have a different idea of "worthy" bands.

I'm sure The Rolling Stones were fantastic in their day, but they just don't impress me anymore, nor do they play music in tune with my taste.

I think for whinging people like myself, there's a really good solution to this: Don't go.
Being a Stones fan, I saw them here at Footy Park about 15 - 20 years ago, and blimey it wasn't the Stones anymore, there were a dozen 'support' musicians onstage. I remember Keef strolling around the stage and nearly bumping into one guy playing rythym, and Keef had a look on his face like he didn't even know who the **** the guy was.

Must be Adelaide then, because they sell out everywhere else.

"The Strolling Bones" - Great, let's see a bunch of decrepit old blokes past their day play songs that majority of Gen Y & X don't know, meanwhile costing us a s***load for them to get here. *ducks for cover*

Hate to throw a negative spin on this, but surely they could've had someone better.
While it costs a shit load to get them here, the SA Government will recoup the money via the ticket sales etc. Well unless it's a total flop, but it's the Stones so there is no chance of it flopping ticket wise.

I think some people on here are over looking the fact that the Stones are a massive band that will probably be the last time they tour here.
Its no different to Kiss playing here at Clipsal earlier in the year. They had not been here for 20 years and were/are considered old by many that don't know the music they play at there gigs. The sunday race this year sold out (over 90k) and I would say 50k stayed to see Kiss.
The Stones will have that same appeal as it will be the only open air concert while on tour here in Aus. The concert will hold over 60k at Adelaide Oval and I have no doubt it will be full.

KISS had been here a few times since there huge Australian tour in the 80's. 97 (which had the original lineup gimmick going for it), 01 (which had the original lineup retirement gimmick) and 04. They did skip Adelaide during the Australian leg of the Alive 35 tour in 08 though.

I wonder if any Port supporters will rock up in full kit with flags and start signing the Power song.
My guess is that the Crows choir will meet them at the airport first ;)

Don't mind the Stones. Rumour is that this is the only outdoor show they are doing in Australia. They will do Sydney and Melbourne but they will be indoors.

Lets hope they get the acoustics right. I have been to a number of concerts at Adelaide Oval and the sound has been shit as it has been bouncing back off the stands unless you are near the stage. Now with the bigger stands this could be even worse.

Let's hope they are still alive by the time they get here in March.

You do know that was a triple M stunt and had nothing to do with the Adelaide football club?

But because some people have shit for brains, they believe whatever they want.

Most Gen X and Y people that don't have an appreciation or understanding of music wouldn't know the Stones. I would hazard guess those same people would be big Pink, Black Eyed Pees fans..

At the very least it'll be on the only Oz show to use the full stage set-up they had at their Hyde Park shows.
