probably not, given the redirections from Holden and other Collingwood sponsors that half their sponsorship be applied to the womens sides.

That's a bit arbitrary though isn't it? How is that money 'applied' to the women's side?

The BHP sponsorship can be rightfully allocated entirely to the women's team if it only involves exposure at women's matches.

Unless there were suddenly gold plated taps in the female changerooms and a bunch of new coaches employed for the AFLW team, then that looks like textbook window dressing.

If $1.5 mill was re-directed to the women's team, it would mean that they earned in that one sponsorship deal double their annual expenses (more or less).

So it would only be meaningful if any surplus for the year was retained for future investment in the women's team.

It's worth noting that the facilities for the women are probably as good as anything anywhere else in the league.

This is not exactly sponsorship, but of interest, apparently the AFL leads all sports in Australia for tax-deductible donations to sport via the ASF for the last financial year (in fact, it received almost half of all such donations and about 40 times more than what the NRL received):

From brisbanetimes.com.au

NRL in a league of its own – sadly

The AFL has pocketed almost $20 million more than the NRL from fundraising, leaving rugby league lagging behind even equestrian when it comes to tapping into a rich source of revenue.

Just a week after we revealed Greater Western Sydney will oppose plans to transform ANZ Stadium into a rectangular venue, Australian rules football has enjoyed a big financial win over rugby league.

The Australian Sports Foundation, the only body that offers donors tax-free donations, has just released its funding figures. Top spot was taken out by the AFL, which attracted $20 million of the record $44.75 million splurged on sport. While league doubled its funding to $429,312, the sum places it as the 12th-ranked sport, behind 11th-placed equestrian. Several AFL clubs raised more than $1 million each – more than double what rugby league raised as a code.

At a time when NRL clubs are lobbying for government grants for high-performance centres, stadium upgrades and junior development, the figures show league officials are ignoring a potentially lucrative revenue stream. The discrepancy with Australian rules should be a huge concern.

"Given the popularity and profile of [league], we believe further substantial growth is possible to assist the game at all levels," said foundation chief executive Patrick Walker.

I’m sure the staff of Workskil are ecstatic at having 1 of the annual paid days off removed from them to pay for this

Bank royal commission: Hostplus entertained employers and staff with $300k of sporting tickets
The head of hospitality sector superannuation fund Hostplus has defended spending $300,000 on tickets to sporting events for clients and staff, saying it was the price of doing business.

Another $40,000 was spent on AFL Medallion Club tickets which were distributed among employer representatives, as well as staff for reward and recognition of their efforts.

Mr Elia said 90 per cent of the staff's AFL tickets went to call centre workers to retain their services.

"It is not an insignificant amount of money, but it is done for the right purposes," Mr Elia said.

"Relationships are incredibly important in our industry. The battle is all about retention of default fund status."

Businesses do this a lot. I'm actually pleasantly surprised that most seems to go to their own staff, especially as it's relatively low level staff (call center workers).

Company I used to work for had a box at the G used, mostly, to entertain clients. The IT department (all 8 of us) asked if we could have it some time when it would otherwise be idle (apparently it only got used about 1 in 4 games). We got knocked back because even though the person in charge was sympathetic (she was a friend), they couldn't let us use it, even for an awful game nobody wanted to see 'just in case' somebody decided at the last minute that a client needed entertaining.

That's the usual story in the corporate world.

Avoiding paying these workers what they are worth, so wanna ticket to the footy .... not a good look for Hostplus, an industry fund.

Usually such things are presented as bonuses.
