So you’re saying the AFL is burning $25-30 million every month? And now they are looking for a few hundred million more on top of the $600 million they already have access to (and are burning through at $25-30 million/month), such that come the end of 2022 they may be close to a billion dollars in debt?

Pretty much this is what seems to be happening, yes

If a competition is trying to scrape a few thousand extra fans into Adelaide Oval all of a sudden do you think they are in a fantastic financial position?

Id imagine Nisbett is aware this is a horrific financial investment and it is why he was raging hard over the last week on Perth radio (raging hard for him anyway).

Can only see what gets negotiated at the end of it all I spose to see just how we get it back and what not. I got nothing on that front. I cant really imagine what will play out there. Do we get to keep on extra staff?, do we ask for extra home games?, do we ask for fixture preferences and first choice? f’ed if I know how it will all work out

I have rage.

This is all about keeping the boys club in their jobs and bonuses (bet they will still get paid). Even if afl goes bankrupt, a new competition will be born.

If we give the cash for nothing, which afl will expect, then I will have more rage. They ensured we bent over every time they had leverage.

They had a chance to make money by having games in WA. They chose something completely different because it suited corporates. And now clubs have to pay for that by putting their existence at risk.

All so that you don’t have to quarantine for a week. Expensive week.

What does any of this have to do with the WAFC? Talk to the Eagles if you want a loan but leave WA football out of it. Footy is stuffed in WA from the WAFL down thanks to the AFL and now they want us to hand over all our money so the suits can maintain their lifestyle.

Tell em to go damn themselves.

Its a loan and not free money though.

From the sounds of it, 1 more year without crowds will pretty much be the death of the sport without this style of intervention

We will give it as we have no choice. Negotiation is what and how we will be compensated
It's already the dumbest period in human history but if this dumb virus s**t is still going on next year, I'm lost for words. 99.99% survival rate yet can't have crowds. Just end it all now if this is a consideration for people

Financial effects will flow on to next season even if crowds are allowed Id say. Crowds would be minimised + the fact membership revenue wont be generated next year as people will be using their credits from this year.

I think people think if X game is played and 20,000 people turn up then 20,000 x 50 = revenue. Their is alot more earned and too it all then that. Sponsorship/food sales/corporate events/rent and many more things have been lost along the way. Even once things start up again next year, the revenue generated gets decreased atleast for the next few years as well and that needs to be factored in.

According to the OP there’s more important things than funding grassroots football

if they do have this sort of money available, I’m raging that across this state there are clubs folding, schools not investing in football at the same level they used to and WAFL clubs dying and meanwhile they are sitting high on the hog

malthouse called the afl a socialist system on the radio the other day and judging by the nepotism, mismanagement and hubris i think he's on the money. maybe in the name of 'equalisation' and 'integrity' we figure out how much the poorest club can chip in to afl house and that's the max the rest of them need to pony up.

Let them burn and start a new comp thats not so one sided.

I think a streamlined comp without GWS, Suns, Melbourne, NM, St Kilda would be great.

Put one of the sides in Tasmania. Maybe another in NT, where you'd have 2 games per year in the Tiwi Islands. Would only get 2,000 people to a game, but GWS have had games where they've only had 3-4k attend (AFL fudge attendance figures). But what a image it would be an AFL game in the Tiwi Islands. Talk about giving back to the game.

Reality is the comp becomes insolvent next year, West Coast has enough financial muscle to build a new league around it. Would be very easy for the likes of West Coast, Richmond, Collingwood, Adelaide to form the basis of a breakaway league.

Switch out GWS and Suns for the Western Bulldogs.

If we are serious about a national competition, it has to include four teams in northern markets. They are future growth corridors, and 40% of Australia's population reside there.

I think the point is that era of subsidising clubs is over.

Didn’t west Perth need to rattle the cans this year? A foundation member of the wafl- and the wafc is sitting on more cash than god?!?

WAFC netted 5 mill in profit in 2019 (and that was after paying off a 5.6 mill loan to ANZ that was expected to be paid off by the AFL but never was) too so could have payed off their debts without breaking a sweat. I dont think they have too much allegiance to the WAFL clubs for some odd reason in a financial sense.

I'm still struggling to understand the amount lost so far this season. I thought they said 400 million in lost revenue not over 400 mil in loses.

400 million in lost revenue in an environment where the costs and expenditure are far greater.

This has to happen. Firstly we have to get rid of the current oligarch and his chronies, then a new Australian Rules Football League is started ( ARFL ). This new league will have a board run by selected officials from each club ( kinda like a democracy ).

The CEO will rotate through with a representative from this Board each year with oversight to maintain some level of fairness. The Billion dollars in revenue would be evenly sent out to each club and not divvied up to the teams they think deserve to have more than others. The fixture would become a draw of 14 teams playing each other twice ( home and away ) with 4 Victorian clubs relocating..one to Tassie ( Hawks and Melbourne merge ) and the other to WA ( North's and Saints ) Bulldogs and Carlton to merge into one team and Essendon to fold up. Collingwood, Richmond and Geelong get to stay as is for being profitable and successful.

Imagine a club like The Tassie Hawks having a first year revenue of 70 million up front with players from the cut team and merged clubs ? It would be instantly successful. Norths and Saint merger would play out of Optus stadium and probably take a while to get successful but there are enough supporters of both those teams here to get some decent support.

Hahaha there is no combination of any Vic clubs that could base out of Perth and be successful.

This isnt a grant? Its revenue distribution. Barring contractual obligations, WAFC have received 185,000 per year since 2001

If you are arguing the AFL should withold TV rights money before they ask for a loan, you should do a read up of contract law :D
WAFC only get $185,000 a year? That isn't much isn't it?
