Scandal AFL auditing third party payments from Geelong

The real question is - why are they now auditing Geelong? Everyone has known about this for decades, what has forced the AFL to do something?
The AFL likes to keep tight control on things, there is no way they want this out there.

The real answer is BigFooty being hoodwinked by Caroline Wilson clickbait again

Geelong supporters flooding the thread to use weight of numbers to drown out the discussion and paint everyone else as rabid conspiracy theorists - despite a credible AFL journalist bringing to light something that is in the public interest.
Or....you know, just point out it's Caro clickbait and "audits" are a standard part of AFL procedure?

I will save everyone the trouble.

The AFL will 'audit' Geelong. They will find plenty of dodgy deals, but realise they all fit in the grey area that the AFL love to have.
They will clear Geelong, then announce a tightening of the rules.

That's it. Done.

I’ve always thought that being head coach of an AFL team was pretty much a full-time, all-consuming job. Which would not really leave a lot of free time to be a Chief of Leadership and Performance at a private firm in order to justify income on the basis of performance for that firm. Nice pic on the job announcement though. I’m all for coaches getting good rewards, on a level playing field.
It would be if you were coaching a rabble.

Famously, Geelong have the least amount of "contact hours" at the club because they treat people like adults and assume they'll be doing the right thing. Scotty included.

Besides, that's already been ticked off - twice.

Didn't Bowes agree to go to Geelong only to have his $1.6m 2 year contract being spread over 4 years? Effectively agreeing to work two years for free. Amazing no other club could offer a better deal than that.

No other club had to because it was Bowes' choice as to which club he went to.

Geelong had been in talks with Bowes since Ablett came back.

Geelong offered him a spot in the midfield/best 22 and made him feel like they wanted him.

Other clubs, as reported, made it seem like they were more interested in the Pick 7 that came with him.

You can't fault a club for being a good citizen. Bowes made his choice based on what was on offer.

He's not paying "two years for free" - he knew his next deal at Gold Coast would be significantly less - the contract just got averaged out

Except Smith had been an Ambassador for Cotton On for almost 3 years before signing with Geelong.

Rowell joining Emirates now and playing for Collingwood in 2028 is more comparable.
Can't believe a local clothing brand would sign up a fit, marketable young player as an ambassador YEARS in advance, knowing he was coming to Geelong just to get around the salary cap and make opposition supporters lose their minds.

It's 4D Chess at Cotton-On!

Who said anything about officially whistleblowing? You're not following the logic here because you're trying to apply a subjective view of reality
There's no "official" and "unofficial" whistleblowing.

If they're reporting "dodgy deals" to the authorities, it's whistleblowing

So I ask again - would supporting another team influence someone someone risking their job and livelihood to stick it to their employer, an opposition club?

Tom Morris saying the AFL audits two clubs by rotation every year, and in 2025 it's Geelong's turn (along with Port Adelaide apparently).

Would be pretty funny if all this clickbait outrage literally amounted to nothing more than "It's just this club's routine audit in 2025".....

That's all it will be.

And? You dont think working for the major sponsor could influence his decision?

Opens a huge can of worms allowing this.

So, Geelong are supposed to do something about an existing agreement between a business that happens to sponsor Geelong (being Geelong based) and a player at an opposition club?

"Sorry mate, if you sign with us you'll have to drop your ambassadorship you've had for 3 years because it will make nuffies upset"

Gee whiz that's pretty ordinary negotiating from the Gold Coast. Salary dumping a player who was already willing to take a massive pay cut to Geelong and throwing in a top ten pick even though Geelong had been courting him for years.

Well, no, because it wasn't certain Bowes would pick Geelong.

Plus Gold Coast had to "give' a little because of the position they were in and because they were screwing Bowes, who wanted to stay at the Suns, over.

Not quite:

Deal was 1.6 MIL owed, smoothed over a more palatable $550K per year contract. So an extra 600K. 300K a year isn't terrible -especially when his career looked like it was on the ropes. Also has a chance to earn another contract after this one, which he likely will.

If you’re going to try and sling some mud around get your facts right ..getting over 2 million over 4 years so he got a contract extension with extra years and more money

Well a blanket rule you can’t be employed by a major sponsor would be easiest.

The mental gymnastics in here by cats fans is delightful. Taste it, the whole comp thinks you’re the biggest modern day cheats and have the shittest culture out.

Whether it’s Dank and doping, dodgy deals with local government to get funding, dodgy property deals, dodgy third party deals, constantly diving for free kicks or hiding thugs and sex criminals from criticism your club is a disgrace.

Taste it.
