Kane makes an excellent point about fans being savvy enough to do analysis on contracts and salary cap hits, a topic that a lot of people would find really interesting to discuss but that is currently effectively hidden away from us.

The base salary and the median are more important than the average.

If you raise the top players’ income, the average goes up, but it’s not better overall.

The base salary is $100k, but for a few exceptions (11, which I have no idea who nor why).

The median seems to be around $400k.

Do you know how much those will increase?

The base salary usually gets as big or bigger junp as the Salary Cap total gets in the first year of a new CBA. Then its flat fir 2 or 3 years then has an increase for the last 2 or 3 years.

I will put up info for 2012-16 CBA and then 2017-22 CBA in a couple of hours.

2017-22 CBA which was amended in 2020 and 2021 for Covid but basically was the same in 2022 as the original CBA.

Notice the AFL gives the AFLPA $$$$$ to run their organisation on top of levies the players pay to the AFLPA.

Which other industry does the bosses pay the unions to run the union????

The median salary is close to the average salary because there is a cap. From the 2022 graphic in post 130;

3+3+6+15+24+32+39+71+95 = 288 players in 2022 earned $401k or more.

1+10+125+126+109 = 371 players in 2022 earned $400k or less.

The 2022 graphic in post 130 says all listed players including ASA's had average earnings was $406.1k. Not all players get paid ASA's and whilst there is a cap there is nothing stopping a club paying a player 65% of the ASA cap which was $1.23m in 2022.

If you remove the $22.458m of ASAs paid in 2022 over the 659 listed players it reduces the average AFL player earnings by $34.08k down to $372k.

Given the graphic above I'm not sure how the AFL gets the
  • Average player salary to increase from $387,000 in 2022 to $519,000 in 2027.

$387k x 659 players = $255m.

Gross player payments before all the deductions was $257.574m so that's probably how they got $387k but if you add $22.458m ASA's then that is approx $280m which over 659 players is $424.9k, not $406.1k as per the graphic in post #130.

I understand why there might have been a push for 1st year players to have 3 year contracts… but I wonder if because of that we see a rise in players with rumours of the go home factor conveniently surfacing pre-draft.
