For example, a player like Thompson

Watched him last night on ABC2 and he looks really good.

With Harley, Milburn, and Scarlett getting towards later stages of their careers, the back 6 is where geelong will now need to focus after years of drafting midfielders and forwards

He is a VFL listed player - do Geelong have first dibs on him, or can he be poached by another AFL club?

And what is the story with rookie listed players like Grima and Lonergan? Can they be poached if we don't promote them?

Rookie listed players must be promoted or delisted once out of contract. This applies to Grima and Lonergan.
Bedford and Davenport have one more year as Rookies
Vfl listed players can nominate for the draft and selected by anyone.

Thompson pretty much has nothing to do with the Geelong AFL club, so it's first in, best dressed with him.

Grima is in his second and last year of his rookie list contract, so if Geelong don't promote him it'll be first in best dressed again. But expect him to be promoted. He is also young enough to be taken as a rookie again.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think Lonergan is too old for the rookie list next year, so again if he isn't promoted by Geelong, any team can pick him up.

Hope that helps.

is there any sort of unspoken rule that GFC should have the option to draft its VFL players even if other clubs might be able to get them with a higher pick??

So if the cats weren't going to draft their VFL guys, it is then open season for other clubs..

or is it just open season anyway?

From what i've seen, there isn't one. However i think clubs aren't really wanting to take the risk of drafting a player from another affiliate, because they only see them a couple times a year.

VFL listed players are open to anyone and have to nominate for the draft etc.

Rookie listed players can be promoted by the club with out other clubs getting them. If their contract (rookie) is up and we dont promote them or they are delisted then other clubs can get them through the normal means as well (draft).

yes, and I guess there are hundreds of kids for the other clubs to look at in the draft

still, I rate Thompson - he read the play really well in the backline, took marks, picked the right options getting the ball out of defence. Actually did a better job than DJ and Playfair at times

So it would be a shame if we couldn't keep him

As with the rookies, it seems the ball is in our court there to keep them

thanks for the knowledge

Picked up Thurley from Tassie (think they were alligned with Kangas at the time) with our second round pik a few years back so an early pick for Thompson might not be a bad idea. If he plays another good game on Sunday that'll make it 3 finals in a row that he's been outstanding in. All of which have been televised for every recruiter nation wide tuning in.

He's definately been impressive and just what we'll be looking for - good sized key defender.

Well I reckon it would be pretty easy to ensure no one else picks him. Promise him we will draft him late and tell him not to talk to any other club. I wouldn't think a club would draft a guy without ever talking to him.
