As much as they (afl.com.au) want to profess that he does, Phelan doesn't have the contacts and inside knowledge just yet as it's his FIRST Phantom Draft. It takes a few years to build that up. He will get better with each year though, but I would read a great deal into what he has written.
Better off looking at the journos that have been doing it for a few years and have built up their contacts.

It is also important to remember that in previous years the first 10 or so picks were almost known before draft day. With GWS having so many picks early, it has made it difficult to determine how the draft will pan out as the freedom of information has disappeared.

I think the draft was perfectly fine.

Hill at 58 isn't bad for you guys considering all the WA media has him rated as a top 30 now. I personally dont see it (or trust a pick on the basis they're a player's brother) and I'm not sure what freo supporters are saying but... could work out for ya.

From the Crows perspective I can't see them taking Kerridge if Forster is still available at 27.

For Port I've got my doubts that we'll get any of those 3 players I've even got a funny feeling about Wingard - remember you're dealing with Sheedy who's just as likely to say to Port that we're not taking Wingard then select him, trying to catch Port off guard and hope they'll panic and do something stupid.

It's about providing the fans some indepth knowledge about there prospective draftees.

If they get the selections correct, then it makes them look like geniuses. If you have no interest, don't bag them for doing work that is appreciated by a lot of members on Big Footy.

I still think GWS might overlook a midfielder so they can get both Longer and Tomlinson. I like the phantom draft but I think releasing it the day before the draft defeats the purpose of it.

This is the point I was trying to make in my initial post - Daffy was unfairly maligned last year - when he was thrown into the job mid-year when Burgatron joined MFC.

As you said it takes a few years to build up contacts and inside knowledge - And it took until Burgatron's third or 4th Mock Draft for punters to be waiting in anticipation.

It's the write-ups that are more interesting, rather than who goes where exactly.

Agree. Kudos to those who put their nuts on the line (unlike Tony Abbott), but also give a bit of flavour to these "unknowns" for people who don't watch any U/18's.

Kind of agree with you there, they are likely to finish bottom next year so will most likely get the #1 draft pick, which they can use to take the best midfielder in the "super-draft". That is also coupled with the fact that they have two extremly good young midfielders in Scully and Ward. As well as an experienced midfielder in Luke Power so I think that other areas would be more of an issue for them.

I remember a couple of draft experts expressing shock Carlton picking up Nick Duigan last year, one insinuating it was a poor selection by Carlton.

Also clubs tell porkies all the time about who they will draft, some journos will make their phantom drafts based on what club recruiters tell them.

The current inside footy magazine is good enough for me, they a phantom top 10 but have extensive coverage of all available draftees.

I agree with Emma Quayle from the age when she wrote that this draft is harder to predict then most, and a couple of potential top 20 picks will slide.

Maybe I've got things wrong, but if I was drafting for Collingwood, and my first pick was at #50, and we have a need to add a young KP forward for depth, and Jackson Paine was available at that pick, I'd be elated.

I would think that an 18 year old KP forward who played in a TAC Cup GF, played for Vic Metro alongside Jonathan Patton and is capable of pushing up into the midfield at times would be worth a punt earlier than pick #68 in a weak draft.
