MATCH: Collingwood v Richmond

WHEN & WHERE: MCG, 7.40pm (AEST), Friday, 28 March

COVERAGE: TV: Channel Nine - Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth, Brisbane, Sydney. Radio: Triple M, 3AW, 3LO.

LAST TIME: Collingwood 13.11 (89) defeated Richmond 7.7 (49) at the MCG, round 16, 2002. In the midst of a nine-game losing streak the Tigers looked capable of causing a big upset, holding the Magpies to just two goals at half-time. But Collingwood slammed on 11 goals to three in the second half, to record a comfortable win, Nick Davis and Josh Fraser booting three each.

THE MEDICAL ROOM: For the Magpies, key big men Fraser and Simon Prestigiacomo face tests on suspect ankles, but suspension will keep Paul Licuria, Scott Burns and Jason Cloke out. The Tigers have only three players unavailable, but they are a pretty handy trio, nonetheless. Brad Ottens (back) and Ben Holland (knee) are several weeks away, while Andrew Krakouer (knee) will miss another 1-2 weeks.

THE FORM: The Magpies could not have been more impressive during their pre-season campaign, until they stumbled in the final of the Wizard Home Loans Cup against the Crows. The Tigers looked ordinary over the pre-season, losing easily to Melbourne, Fremantle and Sydney and only notching up a win over reigning wooden spooners, Carlton. Confidence is not high.

WHO’S HOT: After treading water for three years, Rhyce Shaw looks ready to make an impact at AFL level. With Burns suspended, an opportunity has opened up for Shaw as a half-back / wingman in the strong Collingwood side. Dual Adelaide premiership player Kane Johnson is a welcome addition to the Richmond midfield and will add hardness and quality to their engine room.

WHO’S NOT: My learned colleague Kevin Diggerson who predicted that Richmond would make the eight this year but Collingwood would not. What was he thinking?

KEY MATCH-UPS: Shane Wakelin is likely to be the man assigned the job of stopping Matthew Richardson, but he would like to have Prestigiacomo around him for support. Still, the Tigers forward line does not look as threatening without Ottens. Duncan Kellaway has been earmarked for his usual tagging role on Nathan Buckley.

ALL-TIME CLASSIC: Collingwood supporters will not agree, but the 1980 grand final lives long in the memory, as it was Richmond’s last premiership. The 81-point margin was a record at the time and Kevin Bartlett won the Norm Smith with seven goals.

WE THINK: On pre-season form alone, it is impossible to tip Richmond. The Magpies, with the three suspended players, look slightly vulnerable, but are in a different class. Collingwood by 35 points.

Coughlan article.

Well no doubt it will be tough, IMHO we have more talent in our list than Collingwood do but, credit where credit is due, they are the better team, our gameplan lacks a lot and as a team so far I have not seen us bond like the Collingwood team does, so my head says Collingwood by 22 points. Just a question is Ty due back, he hasnt played much but should be brought in, we are missing Holland at least Ty can play that second or third tall for us. So my team for round one versus Collingwood...

B. Newman Kellaway Zantuck
HB. Campbell Gaspar Hilton
C. Fiora Coughlan Tivendale
HF. Pettifer Richardson Blumfield
F. Rodan Stafford Nicholls
R. Hall Johnson Bowden

INT. D.Kellaway Rogers Cameron Shultz.

Newman deserves his chance i feel, Nicholls is said to bring toughness and a bit of energy to the team and can kick a goal, so will be handy. Johnson Bowden and Coughlan in the centre square is still a very good combination, Campbell at half back brings stability. We need Hall to do 80% of the ruck duties, McKee aint that great and Fraser will be out or underdone so I think he will be capable of doing this, quite frankly he becomes the most important player for us because without Staff up forward to provide another forward we are doomed.

It says that Pettifer is suspended in the Herald Sun although I can't remember hearing about him being reported or suspended. Was it from last years final while playing with Coburg? Anyone know?

Rogers in the backline?

certainly better value there than on the ball or floating forward........the guy has looked lost the past few seasons, i think a run down back to get back to basics may just be what is required to give him a new lease of life............actually when he crossed over with the late Tape (RIP) he played his first game in the fosters cup off half-back and looked the goods, a big mistake he never played more footy back there

No 1st gamers look like they are to play in friday nights blockbuster for Richmond. Thought I may aswell say that.

yeah you do have a better list:rolleyes:   ... if the tigers cant win this, then they will not make the 8, pies missing 3 hard nut good players, and two carrying injury, tigers should win by 4 goals. even tho you are missing ottens(doesnt do much and holland who hasnt played for yearrsssss).

Colllingwood lost the first round last year ...made the grand final.

So your formula ' lose r1 = no finals' is wrong.

got anything else ?

Richmond have to fight. Not interested in anything but watching Richmond fight. It's not about fitness, conditioning, skills or plans or anything else. Not anymore. Not against these guys. Not this Friday anyway. This is Collingwood. Not practice-match, pre-season Anglesea camps & sun-lotion crap. It's about the fight.

it's all :

Eyes on the ball.
Hard at the ball.
Run the ball.
Hit the ball.
Fight for the ball.
Eyes on the ball.

The winner on Friday night will have been the hardest fighter.

I'd hate to put pressure on, but If we cannot beat a seriously undermanned Collingwood, memberships will stagnate bigtime, recently signed members will send tickets back to the club cut into little pieces, knives will be out at 10.30pm, the answering machine at punt road will be full by 10.35pm, talkback radio will be clogged with ferals abusing Frawley and his dud players.
Ah, dont you love it, footys back.

This "undermanned Collingwood side" excuse is simply that an excuse. They have 5 players missing , so what, we have five players missing - Otto (ruck/FF), Holland (CHB), Chaffey (good small backman), Dragga (classy wingman/HF flanker) and Krakouer (would have played tonight if not injured). There are no excuses tonight.

Car'n the tigers!
