We had it in 2020 and 2021 due to COVID and it could happen a decade later due to the MCG undergoing significant redevelopment works on the Shane Warne Stand

In 1991 the Grand Final was played at Waverley due to the construction of the Great Southern (now Shane Warne) stand and in 2020 and 2021 Brisbane's Gabba and Perth's Perth Stadium hosted Grand Finals due to COVID

It'll happen - SA and WA state governments will throw money at the league.

Hopefully the Eagles are up the pointy end again by then 😅
A second Grand Final in Perth in 10 years will be huge. The first was 4 years ago today. Brisbane will have its Olympic Stadium under construction by then leaving Adelaide Oval and Optus Stadium as candidates in 5 years time.

Yep AFL love money and their sugar Daddy (vic gov) is skint from blowing billions on nothing.
They will use other states prosperity to stand over vic gov with investment demands.
If they don’t come to the party I’m sure they will move the roadshow.

Every second year the Grand Final should be held away from the MCG. Rotate it through other states.

It's a national competition.

for every 1 interstate GF, probably tack on another 10 years to the current MCG GF hosting agreement...

I think they have just done it by the year after Covid. 2 more added.

I think before the 'end' of thst deal it could have well moved to a 2 on, 1 off arrangement.

The Vics won't like it (or 'the Footy World' as the Vic media prefer to call themselves) but having the GF played in Perth/Sydney/Brisbane/Adelaide - even dare I say Tassie - would have a major impact on the league's profile in those cities - plus it'd be a guaranteed pay day from the state governments.

The league will also see a benefit of not being too subservant to the MCG/MCC.

It will also help set an expectation re. the standard and maintenance of stadiums and how often they are upgraded. Upgrades can be planned around scheduled GF dates and this will improve the overall experience at the venues.

I think it will get there eventually - even with the archaic deal in place, the league won't sit on their hands for 30 years and give up the genuine opportunity for growth of the game.

As a side, WWE just announced Wrestlemania in Saudi Arabia - I'm not suggesting we play the GF at Lords here but can you imagine how much money they would be clearing by moving their 'show piece' away from North America? 😯

As someone who knows far too much about these things - there's a lot of dirty money and dirty secrets behind that deal.

So the AFL will cancel a contract with one state government to take money from another state government?

Build a 105,000 stadium and you'll have a solid argument. Not until then.
Highest-attended Grand Final was 55 years ago. They're just knocking down the Shane Warne Stand only to add just 5,000 additional seats to it which is the same size as Camp Nou in Barcelona.

That is a weak argument - the 100,000 people who actually attend the event are a very small fraction of the audience that engage with the event around the country.

The head count on the attendance is by the by - a full stadium is a full stadium.

They won't cancel anything - they'll work through a compromise that will 'benefit' everyone (psssttt...that means MONEY).

Ridiculously long term deals are very unlikely to reflect market value by the end of their life - for the sake of good business, they'll work out a way that everyone gets a slice of the additional money that can be generated.
