I feel like they used to be strict on this, then went soft (AFLPA driven?) and now it's become so ridiculous they're being forced to do something again.

Agreed.

They need to have some strict guidelines in relation to how & when you can speak with a player and be prepared to heavily penalise clubs if they breach the rules.

I've been saying this for years! It probably started with the Geelong trip to Boak and has just got out of control since.

Part of free agency - which should only expand - is that you earn free agency as a right at the end of a contract and that clubs can sign free agents once they are free agents, not before. Any time before is a trade and that requires the players club to give permission.

Players all pay good money to agents. Clubs all pay good money to list managers to work through contracts and contingency plans. At a minimum there's 6 weeks between the end of the home and away season for non finalists and the start of free agency. In reality there's 6 months between the end of September and the start of the next season in which these things could occur.

Free agent meetings and comments will occur and get out because jounros are going to stalk players and they are going to ask the questions of coaches, players and officials. It's time for some decent rules to stop it.

Players will benefit - they can delay their decisions until the end of the year
The good clubs will benefit - they'll get more players willing to wait to free agency
In the long run media will benefit because we can talk about footy in the season and get a better free agency and trade period where it belongs in October/November.

what year was the Geelong trip to Boak?

It needs to go further, its all the journos out there constantly speculating about the future of players throughout the ENTIRE season.

I seriously don't want or need to know if x player is staying or leaving until the season is over, especially if that player is playing finals. (Ryder, Lycett etc)

Just like it did last year, it feels like the finals are taking a backseat to 'potential' player movements.

speculation keeps viewers ect.......click baits....ect.....for now it's all part of the game until changes are made!

the best and simplest way to do this would be to say to both clubs and players: you signed a contract, you must see it out. no early termination, no payouts. you signed for 4 years, you get paid and can only be there for 4 years. similar to what they did to sydney with the franklin deal.

I assume players would still be able to push for a trade though under this? Coaches wouldn't want to keep a player on their list that they don't want, and vice versa.

You don't think it might have started around the time the Suns came into the comp or do you think all the players who went there made their decision in the two weeks at the end of 2010?

Ah this is wonderful. For years, clubs have been ripping into our playing list and enticing them home during the season under contract. For once, it has gone the other way with the Lions and the AFL want to take stand now.

Get ****** Gill
How did you get a contracted Bundy again?

The premise that you prevent people from talking is nonsense. The best you can hope for is no formal deals signed.
You just cant control people like that unless you monitor them 24/7. You end up either turning a blind eye or relentlessly pursuing people over who they have coffee with.

Wil give rise to the middle man who wears a Teflon coat which the AFL can’t touch.
When there is a will there’s a way.

You're talking to one player. Relax.

That's pretty much what Gil said.

Managers will still be able to talk (AFL probably can't stop them) but he's looking to stop the direct contact with the players.
