So, Motlop goes to Port on around $450-500K per annum as a Free Agent.

Geelong now receive an end of first round compensation pick for Motlop (most likely around #19).

Strange how Motlop's worth is that high all of a sudden.

Also strange how the Cats can have a second round pick they can use to trade to the Suns so that Ablett Jr. can return to Kardinia Park ??

This all smells like the AFL once again making up the rules to suit the situation, all of the players & clubs are happy & its a PR dream for the AFL.

I'm not having a go at the clubs, they don't make the rules, the AFL are the ones who are showing their dirty corrupted hand once again because it helps their cause.

600k+ contract.

600k after CBA increase is equivalent to 500k
Under standard circumstances, not enough for a first round compensation pick.

But you guys sooked it up pretty hard when we played you at the G, and the planet feels sorry for GAJ
His contract is similar to Rockliff's so are both unwarranted.

Had to give Brisbane their priority pick without the backlash
Ladder position comes into calculations for compo, finishing dead last and top 4 are not equal

derp:drunk:
Nakia explain the band system to this tin foil hat man :)

Let him melt I say.
Fair point. Usually those who win are happy and don't melt.
Aramis agrees with him so I guess that says it all about his statement ;)

Wells said earlier that pick 19 won’t be used in the Ablett trade. So if it was a conspiracy by the afl they did a real bad job in not letting Geelong know

Having a third party subjectively deciding a players worth based on wish washy metrics is never good for the league.

it's making do with the best of a situation.

Restraint of trade is a big issue and no doubt if tested, the restraint will be found unlawful. The AFL could argue the concept that players are employed by the AFL and not the clubs but courts will see through this and worse, the AFL opens themselves up to bankruptcy over issues like the dons drug saga.

As a compromise, FA has to exist. If clubs feel the compensation is too lucrative...............then they should trade players under FA.

If the AFL thinks the formula is too generous or too tight, then they should tweak the formula.

I hate the precedent this sets now. This whole compo pick thing needs to be scrapped. If your player walks as a free agent, then you lose that player. Simple. There can't be an incentive to not match offers except to free up the cap space.

Totally agree.

It's call "Free Agency" so it should be free of charge.

The inconsistent nature of how the compensation picks are awarded on top of the fact that other clubs get penalised in the draft order means that the while thing is a farce.

Players wanted FA so they can have it but under this structure :

(i) only players who have been in the AFL system for 5-years or more are eligible to change clubs under Free Agency
(ii) if a club takes on a Free Agent, they must sign them to a contract of no less than three years
(iii) players who fit that criteria can pick & choose which club they go to
(iv) the club losing the FA is not entitled to any form of compensation whatsoever
(v) clubs can trade a player whenever they like & to whomever they like to without the consent of the player involved
(vi) any player who is delisted from their club automatically has to go back into the AFL National Draft to continue their career

Everyone is fine with Rockliff being deemed band 2 compo, yet Motlop getting a similar contract and being younger receiving band 2 compo is corruption. Sounds legit. Subscribed.

Geelong supporters are exempt from commenting on this situation given the natural bias they will have.

Besides, it's not the clubs that are at fault here.

How do you know. End of R1 is for players who's contract is in the 6-15% bracket across the competition, unless you know the salaries of every AFL player you CANNOT know this to be the case.

Motlop $600k+ 4 years, 26yrs old - Band 2
Rockliff $650k 4 years, 27yrs old - Band 2

It's not hard to work out really.

Yeah, coz it suits your clubs position.

It's a farce regardless of who you support, the whole compensation system stinks to high heaven.

There isn't a season go by without some sort of controversy related to it.

Are you sure he's getting $600K at Port ??
