What did you think of Naughton to Bulldogs ;)
Stupidity ......they already have the tallest list with 12 talls in the AFL ......they lose the run of Murphy & Boyd, and bring in the marshmellow Schache & now Naughton

I believe if your club had a lot of draft picks in this Draft, thus tying down your list with 2 year contracts .....not good, coming into a strong draft in 2018

Port & Freo had too may late picks .......a lot of the smarter clubs restricted the number of picks in this Draft

ADEL .....2 picks
COLL ......3 picks
ESS ........3 picks
SYD ........3 picks

PORT ......5 picks, the first at #47
I understand the thinking but you must delist 3 anyway plus a few leave ie natural attrition fixes that. If your Draft Strategy revolves only around contracts then something is wrong somewhere.

And our few picks also makes sense when you consider last year we had an unusually high 5 picks - first time we had that many since 2008. So we have a big stable of draftees. We have 8 draftees yet to play a game:
Dear, Doedee, Poholke, Himmleberg, Signorello, Davis, Fogarty, McPherson, and Gallucci with just 1 game.

Pretty much a quarter of our list. Certainly no need for any more especially if next year is better.
Once again understand all this but it then means this time next year 1/3 of our list would have played less than 10 games. (give or take)

Its like Black Friday thinking. Oooh next years sales are going to be better so we shouldnt buy too much stuff this year. I think you could spin any draft strategy to suit an argument.

Port had a lot leave so needed to fill their list , it was a numbers game , not any particular strategy. Yep as WW noted the contracting might be a concern for those clubs but deep pockets can fix that. If all of Ports DFA and RFAs all have 2 year contract ( minimum) and their new draftees also have 2 year contracts , then there would be people already at the club starting to worry. I think I read a quote from GremioPower which went along the lines of '' if those players are worried then they might perform even better making our club stronger'' (paraphrase) but the nature of the AFL business means 'treat em mean keep em keen'' doesnt work as a sports model in the 21st century

I should get more sleep

It's all in the planning & drafting .....we have great success with Rookies (cat B) ....this enabled us to upgrade two rookies & take 2 live ND picks

How many Rookie upgrades did Port have? .......thus due to list management decisions, were forced to make 5 selections, the first at #47 .....don't care how you slice & dice it, not a good outcome

I don’t think one third our list having played less than 10 games is a problem. That should leave us 26 players that have. The key is to have quality in your firsts, some decent depth and then young talent.

Loading up with two many experienced players in your reserves just takes up salary cap.

Of the guys who haven’t played many games, some are low picks who need games.

Speaking of talls vs. smalls.

Below table shows the updated senior lists broken down by height (and age groupings).

I've excluded Vickery from Hawks' list, as he has retired, despite still being listed for next year.

Interesting that we have the fewest number of under 21's.

Not many good ones
A lot of Ruckmen ....or Ruckmen/forwards

List is a bit unbalanced .....by comparison, we have 3 ....JJ, Jacobs, ROB + one Rookie

Yes. BUT if we go in hard this year with say 4 picks and then next year want to do that as well the number is even higher.

My point is you don't use draft picks just because you got them, especially when you have 5 from last year still basically yet to play + Doedee + Dear.

I think if we anticipate we want 4-5 picks next year then it makes sense from a list management POV to hold off this year.

Also of course there is no guarantee that all those who have yet to play a game are retained for 2019. If, for eg, Dear doesn't play that would be 4 years on a list without a game. That's a long time without development enough to get to AFL level. One of them could be traded ala Wigg etc etc.

Yeah, I would like to see for a change, a club recruiter making honest statements like:
"All our preferred options were taken in the draft, so we had to make do with uncertainty in the selections"
"We called out the wrong name, but it was too late to change!"
Or simply..
"We ****** up with our selections!"

That'd be hilarious.

"Nah, we picked kids based on their names - that's how I pick my Melbourne Cup tips. So we welcome Barry Kunts and Nakia Whykickamoocow."

"We really wanted Hunter Clark, but those ****ers at St Kilda grabbed him first so I kicked a bit of a tanty and that's why Billy Hartung went at pick 11."

"No, I don't think we got any bargains. In fact, I reckon we overpaid for everyone."

Listening to the description of Hayes the Port draftee ruckman he sounds like the absolute perfect kid for Brendan Lade to work with. Couldn't ask for a better mentor.

Plus replacing Lobbe on the list is a pretty low base of expectation. Anything better than years of woeful football and Port having to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars just to get him to leave is a win for them

I certainly wish no harm to any kids out there but I am secretly hoping that Rankine, Lukosious and Rozee have underwhelming year in 2018 due to injuries just like Fogarty and McPherson have had this year so that we can pick them with our first 3 picks next year!

Imagine how great it would be to clean up in the draft with top SA talent 2 years in a row with some of those boys having genuine star potential. In some cases superstar potential.

Been watching all of rankines videos. Looks amazing and surely pick 1? Haven't seen someone with so much talent for a while.

12 months ago, same was said about Darcy Fogarty. A year is a long time in football. Anything can happen between now and next year’s draft!

Would certainly be a nice icing on the cake for us! Exactly the type of player we need to add to the list.

A steal.

Even in some of the highlights videos from this year there is ''Top 5'' talk around Fogarty

And once again, a surprisingly positive Poort Pear comment from TM.

Rankine is a couple of levels above imo. He's a freak. Watched him a couple of times for westies.

We aced the draft. Could we see two draft picks debut the year they are picked? Wouldn't surprise me with these two.
I reckon this year is all about getting their heads and bodies AFL ready. Could get a taster like Galluci did this year.

THE draft is one of those great nights in football where everyone walks away pleased - yes we know there will eventually be winners and losers but nothing wrong with enjoying and getting caught up in the excitement. That’s why every club is a winner on draft night!

Problem with Port Adelaide is that they are unable to develop any talent except high end which develops itself
All their picks will be delisted in 2 years or have minimal effect in their team...bookmark it !
Won't get a game until he is 27 either
