He only played 11 VFL games so yes there he did not get an extended run there. It is an interesting point. I am with you as far as asking did playing him as a high half forward for so many games hurt his development as a midfielder.
He averaged 26 disposals and 6 tackles in his 11 games and had 4 30 plus games. So I agree that not playing more VFL in his prefered position did hurt him but I do not think that is all to the story.
For him to make it 3 things had to happen.
Improve his outside game and be able to play a role forward.
Improve his endurance.
Develop a bit more power and muscle.
None of the above really happened so even if we did give him 25 less AFL games and 25 more VFL games we probably end up at the same spot.
At the end of last year and the start of this year I thought he would be of interest to someone else but he just did not improve his running and his outside game and decision making was still poor.
He basically kept getting a game because our small forwards where poor and not as competitive as him.
Taylor is clearly the better defender and has played with more aggression. Not as classy disposal wise as Kondo and maybe a bit more looser character wise which is not always a bad thing. Also Ant, was there a big difference in quality between Taylor and Kondogianis? From my little knowledge of the two it seemed like Kondogianis can’t defend but they thought they could teach him that, perhaps getting him to Taylors level eventually? Do you know what their thought process was there? Can you give me your assessment in comparing the two (ie who is the better kick etc).
Just curious in your opinion, there is no trap coming LOL.![]()
Will be interesting to see how he goes as a midfielder. I am not totally sold on him not being an okay AFL player but he will have to find another level.Fair comment I think.
Wonder whether we were better off pumping up his value with VFL performance. Too late now.
Apparently he is going to play for Port Melbourne next year, should do very well.
Thanks for the summary.Taylor is clearly the better defender and has played with more aggression. Not as classy disposal wise as Kondo and maybe a bit more looser character wise which is not always a bad thing.
I think the comparison is really down to Farrow V Taylor. At that stage Kondo would have been on our list of possibles but a lot of uncertainty around if we would actually get to select him and if we would select him over anyone else who may have been available. Then we had the Sweid situation and having to wait if Fremantle would bid.
So in the end I doubt Kondogianis was a factor when we passed on Taylor. We went for the classier ball mover in Farrow.
Personally I am a fan of Taylor. I would have taken his no compromise play over Farrows class but I also understand why they went that way as we need better ball users.
Just on Max he reads defense well enough. He has struggled with the one on one defense but I suspect it has a bit to do with him needing a bit of physical development. He is a longer shot but he has a lot of class.

Some comedy gold. Lucky they saved us from Nas lol.
Always thought he had the slowest hand-to-foot kicking motion in the game. Really stark being in the same midfield as Merrett who seems to have one of the quickest. On top of that he really played the game like he's grown up being more physically developed than his peers and broke tackles at will, then completely found out at AFL level where he's a smaller type who in no way has the strength to do it. And never seemed to learn/adapt.One thing that has always stood out for me with regards Hobbs, is that he seems to have an ordinary footy brain and makes very slow decisions.
Terminal for someone with his complete lack of leg speed and outside game.
Personally, I feel like it was better when he started at the club, but he seemed to lose confidence at some point, and just began ducking into tackles rather than move the ball on. Was a bit odd.
Should be interesting to see how he goes at VFL level, or wherever he ends up.
His ordinary footy brain was more no outside game. Not quick enough as far as making decisions outside of the contest. Well that is my take on it. Seemed okay when he was at the coal face. One thing that has always stood out for me with regards Hobbs, is that he seems to have an ordinary footy brain and makes very slow decisions.

even after all those years he still didn't understand the concept of a 'big bodied mid'.
