A friend and I were trying to come up with the equivalent AFL player for the Australian test cricket team. I thought it'd be fun to open it up to this forum to try and improve on some of these and add some additional players in as well.

Let's start with the current test line up then:

Finch = Jack Darling (already reached his ceiling and still has too many unexplainable brain fades)
Harris = Isaac Heeney (hasn't put it all together yet, but has the tools to be a very, very good player)
Khawaja = Bachar Houli (you know why...)
S Marsh = Jarrad Waite (played on "potential" until well in his 30s or was injured)
Handscomb = Joe Daniher (looks the goods, but gets found out against better opposition)
Head = ??? (any number of players from every club that is never going to be a star but will be a solid contributor for around 200 games)
Paine = Bob Murphy (a captain of integrity who took on the responsibility late in his career)
Cummins = The Bont (aka an absolute jet with still a long career left)
Starc = Alex Rance (a very good player, but sometimes skates through on reputation)
Lyon = Luke Bruest (plays a very specific role and doesn't generate much attention despite being statistically excellent)
Hazelwood = Ben Cunnington (consistently very very good but misses out on the plaudits others receive)

And the 3 on suspension:

Bancroft = Andrew Gaff (coming into their own until they made a grave error in judgement and sat themselves out of potential or actual glory)
Smith = Gary Ablett Jr (simply a cut above everyone else, but not fit to tie the laces of a real captain)
Warner = James Sicily (obviously talented, but just a w***er really)

And just because:

M Marsh = Gary Rohan (gifted far too many games because of frustratingly unfulfilled potential)

= = = = = = =

Some additions from this thread:

Johnson = Richo (spray it left, spray it right, when all looks lost a run of greatness, and then back to sprays with occasional matches of brilliance, pretty much always entertaining)
Voges = Tom Mitchell (averages 62 but people don't rate how he scored his runs)
Warne = Wayne Carey (talisman-like figures for their side, widely considered among the greatest of all time but came with shitloads lots of controversy. Were forced to miss 12 months of their careers in the prime due to off-field issues)

Also has to be a player that is open to an inexplicable brain fade. Danyle Pearce sort maybe (200+ games, could do some really talented stuff along with some really stupid stuff)

Tim Paine would have to be Richie Vandenberg, surely. Not rated, questions over first team credentials taking over as captain of a bit of a s**t sandwich.

Adam Voges would be Tom Mitchell. Averages 62 but people don't rate how he scored his runs.

David Warner would be Dangerfield. Explosive gun but people are sick of his stupid face on TV.

Big show Maxwell = Tom Boyd

Promised a lot but only delivered in one game.

I like the Paine/Vandenberg comparison and the Voges/Mitchell one is fantastic. Not sold on Warner = Dangerfield though.

Will Pucovski or however you spell it = Jaidyn Stephenson .

Both huge talents yet to put it together consistently with some incredible performances to their name already, have 10+ years of elite tier performances you'd expect

Will Pukovski - the kid who is touted to be the number one draft pick in two years. Has potential but in all honesty, who really knows?

As an aside to this, i am always amazed at the general public's ignorance regarding how hard it is to be a professional cricketer. Blokes who have a bad run in state cricket are 'shield hacks' but blokes who make the All Australian squad of 40 once are fawned over.

Geoff Marsh - David Cloke, 1980s star
Shaun Marsh - Jason Cloke, ultimately pretty average
Mitch Marsh - Cameron Cloke, taller middle change, ultimately also pretty average
Melissa Marsh - Travis Cloke, the talented one who is now retired
Geoff Marsh was far from a star. Averaged mid 30s in tests.

Warne = Carey. Talismen like figures for their side, widely considered amongst the greatest of all time but came with shitloads lots of controversy. Were forced to miss 12 months of their careers in the prime due to off-field issues.
