BATTLE OF THE BRIDGE ENDS ALL SQUARE

NEITHER Sydney Swans nor GWS GIANTS could be split in the Round 5 Battle of the Bridge, with a last minute shot on goal from the GIANTS with 20 seconds remaining tying the scores at 108-apiece. The Swans got away to a fast start to lead by nine points early, then extended that to 17 by half-time with accuracy keeping them in front despite three less scoring shots. Indeed it was inaccuracy by the GIANTS that arguably cost them the win, booting 15.18 (108) to the Swans' 17.6 (108). The game did not come without controversy with a late free kick to Brent Daniels 25m out a chance to win it for the visitors. It drifted to the left though and the game was called a draw when the siren sounded. Luke Parker was superb in his 200th game, picking up 20 touches and four marks and laying 11 tackles. Callum Mills (11 tackles) and Kaiden Brand (15) were also strong defensively, while Lance Franklin snagged three goals alongside fellow talls, Nick Blakey and Sam Reid. It was a case of so close, yet so far for the Swans who looked to have it early in the last term, but managed to fight off a GIANTS comeback late in the term. The draw was further soured for the Swans by first-year player Dylan Stephens helped off after a terrible landing from a marking contest.

POST MATCH COMMENTS

Q: "Do you look or the positives or negatives out of this game?"

PW: "A bit of both. "These guys are hurting because we're just not quite getting it done at the death. I was on the edge of my seat when I thought we'd blown another lead in the final term, but the shot missed so at least we walk away with two points. "I feel we're doing better for longer, it's just keeping it a consistent effort throughout."

Q: "Dylan Stephens looked to be fairly uncomfortable late in the game?"

PW: "Yeah bad news on that front. "Dylan's been an absolute warrior this season but first prognosis is he's torn his Achilles and if so, that's his season done. "It's a bitter blow for us because he was contributing strongly. "We know he will hit the recovery well and be back bigger and better than ever."

Q: "What changes do you look at making for next week?"

PW: "Well there's one we have to make now with Dylan coming out, but we'll look across the board. "There's a few players we think could do with a spell in the NEAFL, but in saying that, there's quite a few who are making it difficult to remove them from the 22, most of the players and impressing in their own roles, so it will be something we discuss at team selection."

MCLEAN LATEST DEBUTANT AS SWANS EYE NEW-LOOK RUCK SETUP

AFTER Sam Naismith was well beaten by the experienced Sam Jacobs, Sydney coach Peter Williams has recalled Callum Sinclair for a crack at first ruck, and given Will Gould a rest in the reserves to try and build up his confidence, while handing Hayden McLean a debut against Brisbane. The overage prospect will chop out in the ruck and potentially provide a target inside 50. Dylan Stephens was the other forced change after he did his Achilles and will miss the season, with Ryan Clarke returning to the fold.

SWANS UPSET LIONS ON THE ROAD

AN inspired final term by Swans co-captain, Josh Kennedy has put in a strong final term, booting two goals from the sharpest of angles to help his side get home in an upset win against Brisbane Lions. Sydney got home by 25 points in a remarkable game which saw the visitors rack up 94 inside 50s, but have 73 less disposals somehow. They also had a record 91 hitouts to seven such was the repeat stoppages. The Swans led at each break, and it was the six goals to two second quarter that helped gain Sydney the break and then held on against a fast-finishing Brisbane outfit that cut the deficit from 44 points to 25 by the final buzzer. It was the work of Kennedy who amassed 27 disposals, three marks, 18 tackles and three goals in a best on ground performance that stood out. Others who impressed included Nick Blakey (16 disposals, seven marks and three goals), Isaac Heeney (20 disposals, 21 tackles) and Luke Parker (16 disposals, 26 tackles). Ruck Callum Sinclair had 47 hitouts from 13 touches in a dominant display, while Hayden McLean shone on debut with 31 from six himself.

POST MATCH COMMENTS

Q: "That was a huge win on the road, your thoughts?"

PW: "It was certainly our best performance of the season. "We played early on as we have most weeks, but we were dominating the ruck and inside 50s which ultimately put pressure on the opposition defence. "When they came at us, we held firm which was the most pleasing thing, it was a great win."

Q: "You had a couple more injuries this game in Callum Mills and Ollie Florent, what are their statuses?"

PW: "Yeah both actually pulled up well in the rooms post-game. "We were a bit surprised but erred on the side of caution given they have past injuries, but just copped knocks so they will be right. "As will Tom McCartin who comes back next week after injury, though it will make for a difficult team selection this week."

Q: "Does this give you confidence you can close out games when teams are coming at you?"

PW: "For sure. "It's not that we doubted we couldn't. "You win some and you lose some, and the last two weeks we lost and drew games, and now we're on the better end with a win. "There's plenty of positives to take out of this match."

Are you simming these, Pete, or playing each round?
I was playing them because the 20-minute quarters on sim saw some more ridiculous results. Might pull it out again and play now I've got some time again and lost track of it.

sfx240057.jpg

I simulated the rest of the season just to catch up so we could head into 2021, and typically the sim gave us one win in those last games to finish with a 3-18-1 record for the season.

In the finals series the GIANTS finished on top, with Melbourne bowing out in straight sets via GWS and Carlton, after the Blues came from eighth to belt Port Adelaide in the elimination final. Richmond defeated Collingwood in the quarter final, only for the Magpies to end up defeating them in the Grand Final having knocked off the Cats and GIANTS en route to the flag. West Coast (6th) was the other team to reach the finals. Only one team scored less than 100 points in the entire finals series (as it's 15-min quarters) with the Eagles losing 77-193 at Optus Stadium lol.

In a very realistic series of events, Oscar McInerney won the Brownlow Medal, Josh Thomas claimed the Coleman Medal and Billy Frampton won the Rising Star. Luke Parker won the Swans' Best and Fairest.

Unfortunately I forgot that they are only one-year contracts so got the sack (shock horror damn AI), so now I'm at Central District in 2021, what I'll do is simulate until I get AFL offers.

I reached the finals simulating Central District and we reached the SANFL finals before falling in the first week.

It resulted in me getting offers from Adelaide, St Kilda and Western Bulldogs.

Realistically having moved to Adelaide for the season, it makes sense to pick the Crows to step back up to AFL level.
