Lets not forget about watching footy on the box on Sunday, at least Ch 9 gave us 2 games, 1 live on Sunday, Ch 7 only did one game and it wasnt even live, not everyone has Austar/Foxtel.

I agree, i watched the Storms 1st round game with the Tigers, it wasnt even a great game according to the experts, but i loved watching it, the physical side of it was awesome to watch, and i have played aussie rules for 18 years, but now i have started training with my local rugby league side, and i cannot wait for my 1st game.

The AFL averages over 4 million viewers per round, the NRL closer to 2 million.

There is no contest in the total viewership of the two codes. It's not even close, hence the gulf in the TV deal.

AFL Friday night Football is delayed by an hour in Melbourne, 90 minutes in Adelaide, and 3 hours in Perth. Rugby League FNF is the match of the round and it is live in both NSW and QLD. Anyone who thinks that is an apples vs apples comparison is ******ed. They pre-select the game a couple of weeks in advance as the match of the round purely for TV purposes, lol!

If the AFL match of the round was ona Friday night (which it isn't) and featured two (or even one) Melbourne teams, it would be around 450,000 and if it was live you can add another 80-100,000 to that. Essendon vs Carlton in 2000 was live, and match of the round at a sold out MCG and rated 900,000 just in Melbourne!

The AFL is by far the most watched TV league in the country.

Why do NRL fans constantly crap on about TV ratings when the AFL has over 4 million viewers per week, making it the most watched league in the country?

Spin, spin, spin.

This is an old article here from 2002 ( http://www.smh.com.au/articles/2002/09/27/1032734328602.html ) written by Roy Matsers and therefore it has as a Rugby Legaue bias towards it, which you will have to excuse, but towards the end, it quotes the NRL's average total per round is 2.1 million, while the AFL's high was 5.3 million and the low was 2.9 million. Demetriou has been quoted as saying the AFL averages over 4 million per round.

For an NRL fan to come on here and try to give crap over TV ratings is just asking to be humiliated. They only like TV ratings because they can be selective and "include" and "exclude" certain figures, creating their own "cut off points" to give their code a positive spin.

But, no matter what spin is used, it won't change the fact that the AFL has a far, far bigger audience than the NRL.
That can't be right! The Bumsniffer trolls on here are constantly telling us that TV ratings are the one area that NSWRL has it over AFL!?

Well I am shocked... ;)

Yep, hence the larger attendences, TV ratings, sponsorship dollars, paticipation numbers, etc, etc, etc...............

Let me see if I've got this right:

  • More people watch AFL on TV than NRL
  • AFL has far higher attendance numbers than the NRL
  • More people are club members/season ticketholders of AFL clubs as opposed to NRL clubs
  • Junior participation rates for Aussie Rules are far higher than rugby league
and yet more people are interested in RL?

I thought F-U was a troll and a half, but damnit you take the cake.

Stick to the RL board, you're out of your depth.

Don't worry about Spewing, he just has nothing else to do.

There is probably nothing happening on the RL boards (lack of people/interest) so he has to come over to the Aussie Rules ones.

I feel for these RL tools. Accept your sport is behind the AFL and move on. Seriously, I couldn't give a stuff about anything you've got to say. The figures are there. AFL is a bigger sport than NRL. Fact, no point in denying it. And there's a good reason for that too, it's the superior sport.

But if you like your sport to have a good physical side to it, RL ****s all over the AFL!

LOL

Yes very true,They're are both different sports, in Rugby league you need to be very fit and tough as nails.

While in AFL yes you need to be fit, but not all that much on the physical side of it.

Can you imagine a league forward tackling a AFL player, No, I rather not think of it .:D

We know the kind of 'physical' you mean mate ;)

Not that there's anything wrong with that :)
Whatever mate, fair dinkum with RL u get too see big hits which would get u 2-3 weeks rest in the AFL, and two players going toe to toe with each other only gets 1 week, AFL you would be getting 6 weeks plus, thats why i enjoy watching RL and after playing aussie rules for 17 odd years i have decided to play RL and i will tell you this, i have found i had to be alot fitter playing RL then aussie rules cos of the big hits and constant pushing back to your line.

I bet some of those wrestlers could hit harder then the RL blokes....
I bet some of those boxers could go toe-to-toe with the league blokes....

Don't get me wrong, i like the biff & you see plenty of it in country footy but the AFL has got to where it is because of skills. A team of meatheads would get flogged nowdays because the skills have improved.

These ratings go only to last Saturday so only cover two AFL games on Pay.

The Bris v Haw game was shown on FTA at the same time in Qld and in the rest of Australia the Syd v WC match was shown also simultaneously on FTA.

The Freo v Port game would have also been shown on FTA in the WA and SA markets respectively and in Melbourne two hours of the match would have clashed with the NM v Coll game which was shown in Melb on FTA on delay.

None of the above NRL matches clashed with games on FTA at the same time. The AFL belts the NRL when combined FTA/Pay ratings over the course of the round are considered.

lol, gotta love the selective use of stats.

Brisbane vs Hawthorn was on Pay at EXACTLY the same time as the West Coast-Sydney Grand Final re-match on Ten. Now at 7pm on Saturday night, what game do you think most people would have chosen?

Suppose, Brisbane vs Hawthorn was the ONLY game on, and was ONLY on Pay-TV, what would the figures have been? Rugby Legaue Saturday games on Fox are ONLY on Fox and they have no competition from other NRL matches on free-to-air simultaneously.

Freo-Port same thing. I was watching Kan vs Coll on Ten at the same time! If Kang vs Coll wasn't on I'd have watched the Freo-Port game on Foxtel.

The Freo-Port game was also on free-to-air AND Pay-TV in SA and WA, further diluting the Foxtel audience in those two states.

NRL fans are the kings of apples vs oranges TV comaparisons. More than 4 million watch AFL games each week, compared to the NRL's a bit over 2 million.

Like any statatistics, if you break down the numbers further and further you will eventually find something to suit any argument, no matter how wrong that argument is.

You're a AFL fan coming under a different name and making out that your some RL fan when your really not, well I don't blame you know, you must be hurting deep deep down! that the NRL figures were higher then AFL figures, and then you have to resort to this because you can't handle it lol.

You have the same IQ of 5 year old kid.

Not only does AFL dominate the TV ratings, the crowds are even more impressive.

A few AFL v NRL crowd stats:
2006 Crowds
Code:
 	        H&A Finals games
                Total Average Total Average
AFL 6,204,056 35,250 532,178 59,131
NRL 2,808,235 15,601 307,466 34,163
A bit embarrassing that the NRL's average finals crowd is lower than the AFL's average H&A crowd.

Average home crowds
* Only the Broncos, who have the support of most Brisbane NRL fans, have a higher average attendance than the Kangaroos (AFL's lowest average crowd team). Every other NRL team is below the Roos, Newcastle closest at about 2,000 less than the Roos.

If we exclude the Broncos and finals games, the NRL's highest drawing game was Canterbury vs Tigers at Telstra Stadium with a crowd of 32,578.
The AFL's average H&A attendance was 35,250. Even if you cut out Collingwood, Essendon and Adelaide, it is still higher than the biggest NRL game of the year (not including Broncos and finals). And that's our AVERAGE.

All these stats and more found here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2006_Australian_football_code_crowds
