It's just the question your asking is a bit too vague and the answer will be opinionated, we're looking for facts that are at least somewhat likely to be answered accurately.

It's not as if Ross can really say "No, it doesn't feel like AFL. It's completely unrealistic." anyway, so what's the point?

Just another question though, how would the ball bouncing mechanism work? Is it automatic or will it be controlled like in previous titles? Not much of a big deal, I'm just curious.

Automatic by default but can be turned off in options - expect to get pinged for running too far if you turn it off though. It does not automatically bounce if you are sprinting regardless of the setting.

It is very subjective - is it a simulation of what I think people want to see, yes - do you ever see a player hold the ball up in the air - no.

I'd like to write a piece on this for my website. I'm guessing reposting the screenshot/s would be out of the question, and I won't be doing it unless I get permission - I don't want to throw Ross under the bus. I won't be directly quoting anyone either - I'll basically be writing about the interaction between fans and developer and how great it is. Just thought I'd run it by everyone first as I will be referencing BigFooty. I really do think it's absolutely fantastic what BigAnt and Ross are doing here!

It's not at all hard to answer. If I were to look at a sports game like FIFA 10 and if I got asked if it played like soccer does I would say yes, for a video game it is absolutely the best representation you can get. And of course he can say if it plays unrealistically. It's trying to get a gauge on where and how it does play out...ie are there zones, floods, do teams chip it around as opposed to just constant hoofs up the ground.

If you looked at a game of footy and then played out an automated match in-game would it play out similarly. It's a question that will get us far more than "can we have/will there be ochre jumpers...":o

Basically I am not necessarily looking for the most in-depth answer in the world. Just a gauge on if they are happy at the representation of the game they have up and running and does it in their opinions resemble the game of AFL that we see today.

Good post, he has provided a fair bit about gameplay though

Make sure you link back to BigFooty in your write up to keep Chief happy..

Is there a create a player option? Probably been answered but I didn't see it anywhere?
I think you will be able to create a player and then they will play in your team in season mode like 07. Thats what I think would be most likely thinking realisticly, Be a Pro mode on FIFA is crap anyway, too easy to kick bags of goals each game.

Well than ask away. But it is the little things that make a game great. I don't think any of us really expects AFL 2010/2011 to be like Fifa 11. It's impossible, i assume their budget is alot higher, and an AFL game would be incredibly difficult to create. What with all of the different things that happen. Anyways, as someone before said, asking "is the game play realistic?" will most likely not get an accurate answer, how can you tell. I feel as if asking about minor details, i will hopefully get a more substantial answer.
Buzzbuzz, i demand a trailer and a steady pay for the mention of my name, anything else will be unacceptable :p. ( Just kidding, any publicity is good publicity).
If i may ask another question, what is pre season like. For example how is player growth judged. I assume there is a career mode?

Oh and any hints about who the commentators are?

:D

Sandy Roberts surely! :p
All I hope in terms of commentary is that it's not like previous years with the whole stilted delivery that I'm sure everyone knows about.

Plenty of other games have worked it out now to the point where you're not calling the players name then saying what they did after and it's more about generalisations and special comments for certain players. Hopefully something like that could happen in this game.

FIFA does it so they have some select quotes for certain players (which does help when you can know that around 2-3 players per team will usually be the only goal scorers). Something like that would be good to have in this one. Basically it would need to be a lot of generalisation quotes and not really anything very specific. Although having only 16 Official teams (plus possible DLC teams for GC and GWS?) means that you'd think there could be a condensing down to having maybe star players have their own quotes as well as a few individual quotes for each team as the year goes on just so you don't get that stilted commentary of "Riewoldt...kicks a goal...that was fantastic" instead it could be a lot smoother "Riewoldt kicks a goal and continues to excite in the race for the coleman" or something similar.

I know exactly what you're talking about. It's just when 90% of the posts previous to Big Ant stepping in where all about "Who cares about graphics or adding in features we just WANT TO KNOW HOW IT PLAYS" when people start to instantly go against that it grinds my gears. I'm all for asking the questions about any extra features but lets try and get a real good idea of the gameplay first off, as far as we can anyway.

BTW my use of FIFA was in no way meant to be a direct comparison. Was just about how when you see FIFA being played you can say "wow this actually looks like I'm watching a real game". I was just wondering if similar would be able to be said about the AFL game and how it plays.

(Also to those wondering why I quoted two posts in a row this thread is moving so fast that by the time I respond to one post there's 10 others waiting to read).:o

Commetti just sounds like he's reading everything, that's what makes it 10x worse. In FIFA games they seem to put in so much more effort, like there's an actual game going on.

Also some improved and more varied dialogue would help but that's the main thinkg about commentary in previous editions.

FIFA does a lot of the 'He does that well doesn't he' and 'he is always looking for that pass', 'He's through here' and so on. Could work well in AFL. When you listen to commetti(sp?) he often just calls the player name, followed by a very slight pause then what he does, or if the ball is moving fast it'll just be something like... 'Mitchell, gives it off to rioli, to lewis, back to rioli who drives it long inside 50.

Could always use those tone audio effects that change the tone in the voice to make it match i suppose :p

The FIFA commentary is amazing, it's not HAWWWTHOOORRNNN are in front BYYY 7 GOOAALLLS like the old AFL games where.

In FIFA they also talk about the teams, say with Spain they said that there was no differance between the teams of 98 or 02, except these guys won EURO 08, and most other WC Countries had something like that, the AFL games where just the same old crap, commentary will be important, maybe a pre-game analysis like, 'with the ladder looking like this, they really need a win here to keep them in the top 4' or 'this is a danger game, they have a top 4 spot locked in, but Carlton have alot more here to play for, watch out Hawthorn!'

I have a mate who's teacher supposedly worked on the game or testing. And he said they were working VERY hard on the commentary and keeping the excitement in the game with commentary getting pumped up / louder and things like that.

Could you confirm this at all BigAntStudios?

Yeah FIFA's regular commentators are alright but the one's who do Euro and WC are superb. They really get into it and when a goal is scored they get so pumped which pumps you up in turn.

Then again Commetti never really gets really pumped up during his regular commentary duties on 7. But it'd be nice to get a more realistic performance that does include some real pump up commentary moments.

Bruce in AFL 99 had some corker's and he really gets up for it, wouldn't mind seeing him come back and there's reason to get him back too.

Yeah and "they played really well that half" instead of mentioning a team. I certainly rather that stuff than the propy stilted way it has been done in previous games.

I think the issue is that the ball does move a lot faster than in some games which tends to make it harder to get a flow in commentary like it is in real life. But I'd definitely rather something that had a bit more of a flow through generalising the commentary than having it like previous years.

I would prefer Bruce in a game ahead of Commetti

I'd prefer both, rather than just having one caller and a special comments man, why not have 2 main callers. Also who would everyone like as the boundary rider/special comments.

Peter Larkins would be decent i think as he is good for the medical stuff, voice doesnt really change much either. I think special comments from Richo would be good :)

Question for the king of BAS, when kicking, do players kick off one step, do they have a walk in when having a shot at goal and how does kicking for goal work?
